Re: Marvel's Eternals (2021, D: Zao)
I think the issue with Eternals is it's introducing a dozen characters and is expected to do something with them. The Avengers had half a dozen and almost all of them were featured in a movie before their ensemble movie, so the introductions were out of the way, this sounds like a slog of introductions and backstories mixed in with a rushed plot to keep the universe going.

C'mon man, Disney/Marvel can pump out 36 successful Eternal solo trilogy films no sweat.

This current film should have been put on ice until 2031
But seriously, of the last 3 Marvel films... 2 of which I skipped, The Eternals was the one I am most looking forward too. I love Lore and universe back story stuff like this. I hope people enjoy it.

That's my point though. The movie features a a C-list character at best that is no longer alive in the present day MCU. The movie could have possibly grossed more if not for the pandemic or the early availability of streaming. It also could have grossed less in theaters if not for the pandemic and the lack of competition that resulted in theaters during the release of the Black Widow. There's no way to tell really. after the pandemic is over, they may not be anywhere near as "successful" with releasing films with C-list characters when there is more competition in the marketplace.

They did ok with Guardians of the Galaxy as none of those characters had solo films before the team films. The difference here is the Eternals characters look very homogeneous and not much differentiates them from one another appearance wise. Wit GOTG, you had a sentient tree, a talking, wisecracking racoon, a green skinned woman, etc. The Eternals doesn't have this. I am looking forward to this movie more than the previous two and if it is different that the usual formula for Marvel movies, I'm all for it.

Yeah but anyone paying attention to the trailers can easily tell that the Eternals are all different, but from the same "family". How is that sameness a bad thing?

This might be the first Marvel movie I see in theaters, with the exception of Black Panther, which I didn’t like at all.
I have no clue, other than a money grab, why a great director like Chloe Zhao would get involved in super hero movies.
But it will be interesting to say the least. Not loving the ridiculous run time though.

Disney’s “Eternals,” the latest installment in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe, will tower over the domestic box office when it debuts on Friday in more than 4,000 theaters.
The comic book adaptation — starring Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie — is estimated to collect $75 million to $80 million in its first three days of release. Some box office prognosticators have indicated that ticket sales could reach or surpass $85 million, which would give “Eternals” the biggest pandemic-era launch for a Marvel movie. Earlier in 2021, MCU entries “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” opened to $75 million in September and “Black Widow” opened to $80 million (it also picked up $60 million from rentals on Disney Plus) in July. Overall, Sony’s “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” holds the pandemic-era opening weekend record with $90 million in October.
In a COVID-battered moviegoing landscape, opening weekend expectations are vastly different than pre-plague times. Industry experts say that even for a $200 million-budgeted tentpole like “Eternals,” inaugural ticket sales above $70 million could be considered a triumph these days. Prior to the pandemic, most Marvel films had no trouble clearing at least $100 million in their debuts.
“Eternals” has already collected $13 million in advance ticket sales, pacing 10% behind “Black Widow” and 23% above “Shang-Chi” at the same point in their sale cycles. Fandango, a popular online ticketing service, backs up those figures, reporting that “Eternals” is outpacing “Shang-Chi” in advance ticket sales and ranks as the year’s second-biggest pre-seller behind “Black Widow.”
Internationally, “Eternals” will touch down in 93% of overseas markets and looks to generate $55 million or more. By comparison, “Shang-Chi” opened to $53 million in similar markets and “Black Widow” grossed $69 million in similar markets.

"I grew up with manga," she responded, echoing an inspiration she has cited previously. "I have to just say, we didn't have movies when I was growing up, not the same way that you guys had access to films, but I did have just cabinets and cabinets of Japanese manga. I just devoured them. That was my first love. I wanted to be a manga artist, but I was not very good at drawing. I have been a fan of the MCU for the last decade. So, I put the word out there I wanted to make a Marvel movie and the right project came to me."
"I just wanted to work with that team," Zhao continued, referring to Feige and the Marvel producers. "Again, back to world-building. It is my favorite thing. That's why I love Star Wars. There is a world that is so rich. I wanted to enter it and see what I can do...can I put a spin on it while still being true to the essence of it? That's exciting to me. It's not that different than me going to the world of rodeo cowboys and saying, 'My spin on that is going to be this,' and it's a collaboration. The chemistry of that, when it's right, it could be very exciting."

guardians also had exciting trailers and commercials. The Eternals trailers look like a d & d sequel to me. As i said earlier i would actively avoid the movie if it weren’t connected to the mcu.
