Another good interview. I saw THE PERFECT WEAPON when it opened theatrically – a friend and I were the only people there – and was rather surprised that a major studio was behind (or picked up) essentially a barely glossier version of the kind of set-bound, direct-to-video martial arts movie that flooded video store shelves during the late 80's and 90's. I did like it, and Speakman was (obviously) a phenomenal martial artist and had the looks, but I couldn't tell whether his blandness was due to his relative screen inexperience (probably) or a styleless director (also probably) who never directed again.
But he had something (plus the fighting chops), which I think was a little better exploited in STREET KNIGHT, which had a more complicated (if formula) cop-thriller plot with more detailed characters and location shooting. Had PERFECT WEAPON been a bigger hit, STREET KNIGHT might've had a decent theatrical run, too, despite being the last (I think?) Cannon film before they tanked, and not having as many fight scenes. I remember some promo stuff on the Warner VHS (maybe just the screener?) which suggested that was the plan. Still, both pictures definitely showed promise, but he pretty quickly went DTV afterward with a run of forgettable junk.
I think he would've been pretty solid in something like SPEED (that nugget is in the trivia section for PERFECT WEAPON at IMDb, btw), although his description of the plot in this interview (i.e. getting him off the bus to have a fight scene every so often) sounds a bit dicey.

That's the most talking Seagal's done on screen in 20 years. Not a bad interview, though, despite the usual arrogance. Nice to see some discussion of the pros and cons of 22 frames per second. New episode: Hong Kong and now international stuntman, coordinator, member of Jackie Chan's famous stunt team, and all-around action guy Andy Cheng Kai-Cheung (currently working on Marvel's SHANG CHI along with fellow Chan team alum Brad Allan, who's performing second unit director and stunt coordinator duties).
Good insights into Hong Kong vs. Hollywood working methods in general, and Chan's exacting standards in particular (before the Party called him up). Interesting discussion of the final fight from WHO AM I?, notably Chan's crummy, nearly career-killing treatment of final-battle opponent (and first-time performer) Ron Smoorenburg in the behind-the-scenes footage used in the MY STUNTS documentary. Smoorenburg pops up in the comments under this interview and is extremely engaging with fans. Would be nice to see Adkins give him some time on the show.

I have really been enjoying his interviews with other action stars. Seeing Richard Norton was great, but Rothrock and Benny the Jet have probably been the most interesting so far.
I could not believe that he got Seagal to sit down to talk. The guy is really full of shit, and from all the stuff ishave heard and read over the years, cant believe half the stuff he says. It appears he had one of those ancestry DNA tests done and he is using some very distant and barely linked relative as if they were basically the same blood and have the same cultural heritage. He is an american with Russian/Jewish/English heritage.
I do have to admit that i really enjoy the Under Seige movies and especially On Deadly Ground. Such stupid but entertaining movies. I watched one of his recent DTV movies on Tubi recently and he was hardly in it. When he was in it he was just sniping and shooting a gun. It was awful.

Under Siege(s) are great. On Deadly Ground is hilarious and so is Michael Caine.

Yeah i remember recognizing Kirsh in that scene. Caine is having a ball in this. Its also got a great group of thugs. You have R. Lee Ermey, John C. McGinley, Sven Ole Thorson and the really weird one is Billy Bob Thornton. Every time i see his scenes towards the end it makes me laugh as i am sure he hated working on this movie and its not one he fondly looks back upon.

^^ I had a free Red Box rental from T-Mobile and rented that last night.
Reminded me of one of those super low budget Cannon movies. But there's a lot of action, Adkins kills a lot of Mexicans and is a total badass. Mario Van Peebles is hilariously over the top as the mustache twirling Mexican cartel leader.

So far, the only segment of The Art of Action I've watched is the one with Cynthia Rothrock. It's a solid interview with lots of info about what it was like to make her Hong Kong films, all of which I've seen. I need to watch some of the others. I hope he does some with HK stars who are fluent in English, like Michelle Yeoh and Simon Yam.

I had a free code from T-Mobile and also rented One Shot like dex14. It's actually decent for a low budget action movie. Adkins is pretty good and there is some good action and tension. Some scenes are continuous shots filmed in 1 take as the bonus material said it was kind of cool like you were seeing it live.
