As for his ending, it was pure Luke. He totally played Kylo Ren in a non-violent just as he did against the Emperor in ROTJ when he threw down his lightsaber. He dies on his own terms and I am totally cool with that. The last thing I would want to see is he dies in some punk death to Snoke or Kylo Ren. It is very tough to give someone a great death scene, as alot of times they just come off as cliched or cheesy. This way Luke goes out by himself and I believe his legacy is preserved.

While I did not like this on the first viewing in December, I have really come to appreciate the ending with Luke and how he went out. The thing about Luke throughout these movies is that he is always thinking outside the box (impulsively or strategically). He honestly believed in TLJ that this cyclical Skywalker/Jedi darkside problem needed to end, or change somehow.

I've given this a couple more views on Blu-ray and I am warming up to it as expected. Anything with Kylo Rey or Luke is cool. I've been able to sort of accept and get through Canto Bight and the "chase" of the Resistance. I can certainly see what Johnson was trying to do.
But there's one thing about the movie that I can see now will always annoy me: Rose. What a pointless character. Her face is annoying AF before she speaks. And then she speaks. Ugh. I'd love to see a 2 hour cut of this movie with her presence minimized and Canto Bight removed.

That said, one of the tidbits in the extras on The Last Jedi has Rian Johnson explaining that his vision for the character of Rose was to be the kind of nerdy and awkward person he hung out with in high school. On the one hand, I think he achieved that vision to some extent. On the other hand, I don't really think it worked very well in the context of the overall story. Maybe when I watch it again with that vision in mind the character will work better for me, but I doubt it.

I see Rose as part of the theme that anyone can be a hero. At the beginning of the film she’s a nobody, a tech who practically swoons over Finn because he’s a “hero”. Except he’s not a hero in the conventional sense and she ends up stepping up and becomes a role model for him to aspire to.

I'm the exact opposite. I think Tran played Rose exactly as Johnson envisioned the character, but the writing and direction for the character was lacking.

To me, Rose came off like a failed attempt at creating a fan-favorite character. Her action figures are peg-warming something fierce
Star Trek Discovery fared much better with Cadet Tilly. She was grating in her first appearance, but by the end of the season she's a scene stealer.

None of it really moves the needle significantly for Finn's character either. He spends the entire movie being preached to by Rose and then DJ and none of it has much of an impact on his actions. He is still mainly driven by two things: distaste for the First Order and strong, platonic care for his friend Rey. If there was intended character development from the things he was supposedly learning from what Rose (or possibly DJ) said to him, it wasn't shown effectively.
The fucker helped destroy the Starkiller and fought Kylo Ren. He doesn't need or deserve to be put in his place.

But as Simon Pegg tells it on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, The Last Jedi’s answer to the “Who are Rey’s parents?” question may have undone what Abrams was at least thinking about doing with that particular thread:
“Well I know what J.J. kind of intended, or at least what was sort of being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by [The Last Jedi]. I don’t know. I don’t know (laughs). I think Unkar Plutt is Rey’s real father.”
Pegg obviously played Unkar Plutt in The Force Awakens, but he also contributed a bit to the script here and there so he would know what ideas were being bandied about on set. And he goes further to say that the answer they were toying with would have been one of greater importance:
“There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her. But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”

Rose was fine...far from the weakest link. I'll take her character any day of the week and twice on Sundays over Benicio DelToro's stuttering nonsense.

Oh, wow, didn't know Fisher and Streep were friends. Just read Streep is Lourd's godmother.
As for Rey's parents - I think they should just move on and build up a new fmaily for Rey with Finn, Rose, Chewie and Poe.

I wouldn't have minded if Kylo was lying in TLJ and then having it revealed at the end of the movie that she was, indeed, related to a Skywalker or Kenobi or Palpatine or something. But to drag that lie on to the next movie and then have it revealed that she was related to the those characters would be a shitty let-down.

I've seen the movie three times and I've never had the impression that Kylo was telling her something she didn't know. Before he says anything about them, she has the 'They were nobody' line. Granted, that sounds more like something someone talking about Star Wars would say as opposed to the way a character would refer to their parents, but I still thought it was pretty clear that she knew her parents weren't tied to someone 'famous' within the universe. Now, I guess Abrams could walk back and say that Snoke planted that memory in her head, but that seems doubtful to me.
