Cats is a disaster. $6.5M opening.

The reported $300M budget was not accurate.

It's budget is about $95M. Still, it's a financial bomb.
I have to wonder who at Universal thought it was a good idea.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Rise of Skywalker pulled $35m on Christmas Day apparently, that’s $14m less than Force Awakens but $8m more than Last Jedi

Although TLJ was starting its second week when Christmas Day fell (a Monday), or to be more precise, TLJ was on day #11 while ROS is on day #6. TFA was on day #8 (and Christmas Day landed on a Saturday, which could be why it made as much as it did... or maybe could've done more? Not sure what kind of schedule theaters would take when Christmas was in the weekend).

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Not sure what to make of that drop and can't compare it to TLJ's second weekend. For such a high OW, I guess it's not bad? Wonder if maybe the drop would've been smaller some of the oxygen wasn't taken out making $32M and Christmas Day and another $30M the day after.

For comparison, though on a MUCH lower OW, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle increased 38% in its second weekend (being shared with TFA which made $52.5M in its third weekend)..

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Bad Boys For Life made $6.36m in previews last night, and with excellent exit polling it seems that it will be huge this weekend.

UPDATED, 12:09 PM: Sony’s Bad Boys for Life is headed for the second-best MLK weekend opening of all time at the domestic box office, with a projected four-day gross of $63 million-$67 million. Today looks to be around $21M-$23M.

There is a very good chance it'll surpass that, imho.

Now looking like $70m+. Smith is probably pretty happy for the rebound after Gemini Man.

Weekend Estimates (3-Day):

I didn't realize Weathering for You was out or doing that well. Excellent boosts for the newly expanded Parasite, Ford v Ferrari and JoJo Rabbit. Rise of Skywalker will end it's run about $100m shy (domestic) of Last Jedi.

excellent numbers for Bad Boys. Dolittle lived up to its name.

That's terrific for Bad Boys. Way better than anyone would have guessed for a January movie.

Don't think anyone saw this coming, but right now, Star Wars 9 is still $60M off from Joker worldwide...

People can say whatever they want. Yes, it made a billion dollars, but there is no way the FINAL Skywalker saga movie making the least amount of the sequel trilogy can be looked at as a positive.

Disney has tarnished the brand, mostly stemming from the fallout coming from The Last Jedi. There's no real other way to look at it in my eyes. You know Disney made mistakes when many old fans that hated the Prequels now look at Lucas much differently.

Star War's future as a franchise lies in television, not movie houses.

Weekend Estimates 0202:2020

Rhythm Section is doing worse than I would have guessed, Dolittle is doing better. Bad Boys is doing very well for itself and 1917 is doing impressively well. Also, Weathering For You is doing well for a fairly limited run.

Yeah, those numbers for Rhythm Section are awful. Have to think the title didn't help.

Understandable why Sony is probably fast-tracking Bad Boys 4.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I would think Sony would want to go a Bad Boys 4 out as soon as possible. I could see it coming out by late 2021 or early 2022.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Looks like Birds of Prey will underperform. Time to put a fork in the franchise and just start all over. Or will it do better overseas? Don’t know how Asia, etc has accepted the DCU.

They've been saying $33m for the weekend since noon today based on pre-sales + thursday night. It's definitely early though.

Only $13m for Friday including Thursday previews.

The upside is the budget was less than $100m.
