^ Yes yes it was. Sorry, this code imploded on itself. Thanks to Amazon via imdbpro for forking up boxofficemojo.com (The new BOM code has a ton of SVG code inserted, which is great for their iffy interface but horrible for us simpleton copy and pasters.)

So it looks like Dark Fate is going to give Paramount back 2 back duds. Somebody's head might be on the chopping block at 5555 Melrose Avenue.
On the Joker outlook, it just crossed $900 million worldwide and will probably crack $1 Billion once the awards season kicks into high gear. It just goes to show you that smart people will not allow the media to dictate their taste in all aspects of life.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I saw Dark Fate and liked it. But realistically it would have needed a massive opening weekend like $70-80M to not be considered a bomb right out of the gate. But the problem is that the budget is $185M plus marketing. Joker wasn't some big budget action movie coming off 2 bombs and had a lot of talk going into it about Joaquin's acting, so it ended up being a big hit.
Most were already estimating $30-40M and with a 50-60% drop in week 2, it would no shot at all of even recouping it's budget. Big budget movies are so front loaded and it's all about the 1st weekend.

Great #s for Parasite, solid ones for Jojo Rabbit (wide next week). I was unaware that Motherless Brooklyn went wide over the weekend. I have never heard of Black and Blue or Countdown.

Black and Blue opened last week. I saw it and thought it was okay. But, it opened with very little fanfare. There was a lot of trailers played at AMC theatres. But, I don't think I saw a single spot on TV. The TV marketing budget must have been really small.

Paramount is taking a lesser hit on Dark Fate compared to Gemini Man. The budget is split up between them, Skydance, Tencent (Chinese company) and Disney.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
What's amazing is that Dark Fate is getting generally "good" reviews and strong Audience scores
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/terminator_dark_fate
70% on RT and 84% audience score.
Genisys was absolutely ripped to shreads 4 years ago. 27% and 53%
Salvation was also a dud as well. 33% and 54%
I think they ran into a case where it's getting generally good reviews from those who saw it. But, I think many are refusing to see it because they're simply not interested in another Terminator movie no matter how good the reviews are and just covering their ears.

Yeah, Paramount had 35% of Gemini Man ($48m of the budget tho I know it doesn't work this way) 30% of Dark Fate ($58.8m of the budget) They're taking a bit of a bath on both but not completely wiped out by either individual one.

I can't believe Richard Jewell opened less than 15:17 to Paris. It is Clint's worst wide release opening...

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I read a few comments on the Variety, Hollywood Reporter facebook pages when they posted a story about the horrible weekend for Richard Jewell.
The gist I got was:
Only old people watch Clint Eastwood movies.
Don't know, don't care about the incident. It was before my time.
Saw enough of the incident in the news, don't care to relive it.
Boycotting the movie because the incident ruined a good man's name.
There's no "stars" in this movie. No one knows the actor who plays Richard Jewell.

It had Jon Hamm and Sam Rockwell and maybe that would draw viewers?
It had no superheroes or material based on a comic book so not surprising it bombed.

Kind of also goes to show what kind of a draw Clint Eastwood was (sure to an older audience) given The Mole's box office performance.

Cats is a disaster. $6.5M opening.
The reported $300M budget was not accurate.

It's budget is about $95M. Still, it's a financial bomb.
