Expect the revocation of that new trilogy to Rian Johnson before the end of the week.

I hope you guys aren't extrapolating the discussion here to me thinking that TLJ is somehow a disappointment or bomb

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

There was no way it wasn't going to cross a billion, even Rogue One managed that, the diminishing returns are notable though (TFA made $2.068b worldwide and was ahead of TLJ by about $240m domestic at this point, it opened at $247m vs $220m for TLJ, so the split is interesting). Of course, that was the first movie with the OT leads in 30 years.

But yeah, I think Rian Johnson is safe.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Nice for Jumanji, really enjoyable movie and probably a little unexpected at how well it's competing.

The comparison between The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi is still interesting to me. Christmas helped, but it's still tracking closer to how Rogue One did then TFA.

TFA was the first Star Wars film in a decade and brought back Han, Luke & Leia for the first time. It had factors going for it that the other two films don't.

Right, there was already some discussion about that earlier on the page. Again, I don't think anyone thought it would match or exceed TFA. It's just interesting to see where it does fall in comparison.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Was reluctantly dragged to the movies yesterday to see Jumanji with my family. Had a hard time staying awake, but I was pleasantly surprised that the audience wasn't full of teens ruining the movie by talking or using their phones full time.

3 stars out of 5: Snake, Memorable Line ("Zoology, b*tches!"), and Destruction of Public Property (the bazaar). Understandably, no stars for Nudity or Good Mort. 3/5 is just about as good as it can get for a family film.

^^ Shouldn't that comment go into the Jumanji thread? This thread is about Box office and movie business money.

2017 Lowest Attendance in 25 years

2017 - 1,239.0 (Billions)
1992 - 1,173.2 (Billions)

Movies missing from the Theater?
-Comedies?
-Romantic Comedies? (I would say date night movies, but one could say that Marvel movies are the new date night movie...my wife loves them)

***Are the "BIG" movie crushing out the smaller movies?
-Waiting to go to the Star Wars/Marvel/DC movies?
-To expensive to go to the "Smaller" movies?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

From 1967 to 2015...no Movie Studio (Fox, Disney, Universal...ETC) has had one of their movies be #1 two years in a row (interesting fact that surprised me).
-1965 The Sound of Music - 20th Century Fox
-1966 The Bible: In the Beginning - 20th Century Fox

Star Wars/Disney has had the #1 movie the last 3 years (2015, 2016 and 2017)...AND with Avengers Infinity Stone coming out, it will be 4 years in a row..THEN, Star Wars 9, most likely that will be 5 Years in a row.

Just a little that I thought was interesting

Disney also had at least 3 of the top 5 highest grossing films in each of those years (4 in 2016).

I'm stunned that THE BIBLE was that high a grosser. I don't recall it being popular at all. But then, there wasn't that much press coverage of this kind of thing back then. It was usually only covered in Variety. And I imagine THE BIBLE was more popular in the hinterlands than in the big cities. I don't think I knew anyone who saw it.

Here's a list of the top ten grossing films of 1966:

https://www.metv.com/lists/these-wer...-have-you-seen

THE BIBLE is one of two films on the list I still haven't seen. The other is LT. ROBIN CRUSOE, USN, a Disney live-action comedy with Dick Van Dyke. Who knew?

I'm happy to see THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY at #6. It just celebrated the 50th anniversary of its New York premiere. It doesn't really belong on that list, though, since it came out in the U.S. in late 1967 and early 1968.

Nice to see Antonioni's BLOW-UP on that list, too. Probably the only film of his ever to score that high in the U.S.

Been going to movies since 1974...never seen a Studio be so strong, but 99% comes from properties they have bought.

Would not surprise me if they have the top 4 or 5 over the next two year.
2018
1. Avengers
2. Solo
3. Black Panther
4. Ant-Man and The Wasp OR The Incredible 2

2019
1. Avengers 4

3. Toy Story 4

They know how to make money, which is fine.

I feel like A24, Annapurna, etc have done well picking up the slack on more original material.

I think certain genres aimed at adults are quickly transitioning to premium cable and streaming.

I also saw only one original movie in the top 25 grossers, Dunkirk, wasn't a sequel/reboot/part of a larger franchise or based on an existing IP.

If audiences decide they are bored with Marvel's superhero films and stop going to them, the theater business could crash and crash badly.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Not really, the #2 grossing movie of 2017 was Beauty and the Beast which is one of many live action adaptations they're doing. Then they also have Star Wats and it's infinite spinoffs and sequels, then their animated division (Wreck it Ralph, Moana, afrozen, etc; ) then Pixar. I think Disney has plenty to stay afloat and so do theaters, though obviously the landscape is changing.

Big budget adult films films for grown-ups do seem to be on their way out though, with movies like Dunkirk and Murder on the Orient Express being the exception. But I'm actually okay with that, the lower budget grown up movies are usually the ones I'm more interested in anyhow.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I think if Marvel or the Superhero genre as a whole ever die off (as many have tried to predict or anticipate anyway), the gap would just be replaced with another form of action movie. Which I think is what Superhero movies really supplanted anyway.

Yep, Sony got themselves a franchise and The Rock certainly is one of the last remaining true box office draws.
