Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

For Monday it looks like DM3 will land another $14.5m, $86.9m 4-day cume. It's actual for the weekend was lower than estimated, around $72m.

Baby Driver, which had an actual of $29.5m, is looking at another $4.5 - $5m on Monday, or roughly $34m cume.

Spider-Man: Homecoming tracking between $90-120M+; Sony saying $80M (reminds me of Warner's $65M for Wonder Woman ).

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Probably looking at a $110-120M OW is my guess.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

It wound up pulling $15.4m.

Spider-man is starting to look like Jurassic World from a couple years ago. That one was expected to make about $115m opening weekend and wound up with $208.8m.

Despicable Me 3 has pulled $107m so far (thru Wednesday)
Baby Driver has pulled $41.7m so far (thru Wednesday)
Wonder Woman has pulled $356.7m (thru Wednesday) and has a real shot of beating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 at this point. (Guardians has made $28m more than Wonder Woman so far, WW still has some legs)

Using the same multiplier as JW (11.6x from Thursday showings; and that's an insane multiplier) takes Spider-Man to around $171M. Ain't getting close to that IMO.

Someone over at HSX posted these multipliers:
CAPA3 7.2x, $111M | SUICD 6.5x, $100M | DRSTR 9.0x, $138M | GOTG2 8.6x, $132M | WONDR 9.4x $145M

CAPA3 = Captain America: Civil War

Oh, and in studio funny numbers, Sony is seeing $99M

What is it with these studios? This and then Warner's $65M OW for Wonder Woman...

Tracking simply ain't what it used to be. And I didn't necessarily mean it'd be 1:1, it's just always funny seeing them adjust their estimates up repeatedly.

Most estimates deal in initial interest only, strong reviews and WOM are more important these days when it comes to getting people over 13 into theaters.

Every weekend, well for the big ones anyway, estimates usually do go way up (unless a movie has terrible WOM).

I understand why studios underestimate, but it is getting ridiculous when they are so far off. Even going off of Sony's most recent projection ($99M), will likely be off by $35-40M. Warner was off of Wonder Woman by $38M (I don't recall if they ever upped it at all).

Still, quite the year for these superhero movies which will finish 2, 3 and 4 in 2017 (#1 being Star Wars).

Seems right now, Wonder Woman might just squeak past $400M (or Warner will make sure of it), Guardians 2 around $390M and Spider-Man has a good chance of getting to $400M since competition is rather weak (wouldn't surprise me if SM is again #1 next weekend if Apes under-performs), unless it acts like Captain America: Civil War which had bad legs (only a 2.28x) despite great reviews.

Official estimates from the studio still need to come in, but Deadline is saying $116-118M.

Probably has a good shot at $400M. I thought for sure it'd fall 45%+ with Spider-Man opening.

Um, not sure if it broke any records (don't think so). It's the second largest Spider-Man opening. Also, technically while it is a MCU movie, Sony gets the box office money.

You can see how it compares to this year opposite Wonder Woman and Guardians 2.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Right now it's inching out Man of Steel for biggest reboot opening weekend (I'm not counting Jurassic World here), but that may change tomorrow. But really that's just grasping for straws.

It did very well, but it isn't the highest grossing Spider-man (Spider-man 3 wins that) or Sony movie (Spider-man 3 wins that) or Marvel movie (Avengers wins that).

Nice to see 47 Meters Down performing well. The Weinsteins probably regret selling the movie.

So, this is a case where Wonder Woman's numbers went fairly significantly down from the estimates.

One caveat, when did previews for Dawn start? Was it 7pm like it's today or 10pm?
