Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
In the meantime, what about Thor 3 would you like to talk about? There's no tracking for it since its still another 4 months until its release... I suppose we can talk about (in terms of its box office) whether it was smart to open it two weeks before Justice League...

This is a box office thread. Thor Ragnarok hasn't opened yet. Once it does, numbers for it can be compared with the other comic book movies of 2017 as well as the previous two Thor movies.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I think it'll probably do well overseas. The last one took in $438M (up from $268M for the first one). And in fairness, it should make a pretty coin those first two weeks, just won't have the benefit of the strong legs (or as strong) that usually comes from November/December releases.
I would assume with it co-starring The Hulk, Thor 3 should have a stronger OW than Doctor Strange (which opened 11/4 last year). DS had an $85M OW, have to think Thor 3 should get close to $100M OW.

All this started over snarky posts (by myself and MK)
But I get it, just that WW right now is the story of the summer that we likely won't see again, its sequel can't sustain this kind of run (at least one wouldn't think so).

Oh, there is one box office I am curious about coming up: Atomic Blonde.

Great holds for all except Apes and Valerian. Girls Trip the latest surprise of the summer.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Its OW was better than John Wick ($14M) but reviews seem to be more on the tepid side, albeit fairly close (6.2/10 avg critic score for AB, 6.9/10 for JW; 3.6/5 for AB, 3.9/5 for JW amongst audiences on RT).
However, it's hard to see it breaking out, but OTOH, competition is rather weak now so it could see better than average holds. Next week has The Dark Tower and Kidnap, and I don't see the former getting more than a $20-25M OW, Kidnap not even $10M.

Kidnap was filmed 3 years ago and has been sitting on the shelf for awhile.
It was already released in some foreign markets and i think is already on DVD and BD is some of those territories.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Box Office Guru thinks otherwise:
At 75% positive on Rotten Tomatoes, the other wide debut this weekend was Charlize Theron's action-thriller, Atomic Blonde which opened to an estimated $18.5M from 3,304 theaters for a per screen average of $5,616. If you take out the pre-release hype, this is a good opening for this type of film. I think expectations started to run a little high in the days leading up to the weekend. It'll recoup its $30M budget easily and once again, a sequel could be in play.

I'm hoping Baby Driver cracks $100m. Storyline wasnt the most original but still the most fun movie I've seen this year

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
To be fair, not sure we've seen back-to-back-to-back movies (Spider-Man/Apes/Dunkirk) scoring 90%+ on RT. Dunkirk has the benefit of not only getting great reviews, but zero competition in its second weekend. One wonders if Fox should've opened Apes this upcoming weekend instead.
August has nothing going on which is why Suicide Squad did as well as it did last year.

Apes just had tremendously poor advertising, imho.

If you've seen the 1st 2 Planet of the Apes movies, I don't see why you wouldn't want to see the final movie of the trilogy.
The trailers/ads aren't going to draw some random person who hasn't seen the 1st 2 movies.
I think Apes was stuck facing some tough competition and audiences still catching up on movies from earlier in the summer that are still in theatrical run.
