Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Like the Pirates franchise, looks like Transformers are running out of steam in the US (Transformers movies have opened in the $100 million range previously). It's somewhat heartening that the message from American audiences is that it isn't enough to crank out expensive heavily advertised sequels/remakes/reboots ... they need to be good too (like GotG2 and WW).
Of course, China just loves the shit out of these overblown crapfests so we'll keep getting more of them (T:LK had the 4th biggest opening all-time in China, behind the last 2 Fast & Furious movies and Stephen Chow's Journey to the West)..

What do you want to bet WW is in second with actuals? They're predicting a 10.8% Sunday drop for Cars 3, 22.8% for WW. Yeah, right. It'll another weekend where WW's numbers will be underestimated. WTF Warner?

It would not surprise me if Transformers takes a 50% or more drop week 2. Despicable Me 3 opens next week and that will almost certainly take #1 next weekend.

With Dispicable Me and Cars coming off abysmal previous entries and the Transformers franchise being... well, utter shit, I'm kinda bummed WW didn't just clean house every week.

I didn't care for Minions, but I thought the first two Dispicable Me movies weren't that bad.

Then there's Cars 2 which which is pretty reviled along with Transformers.
Essentially 3 franchises whose sole existence is to sell toys and mercandise.

Despicable Me 2 wasn't as good as the first, but I think it was still very entertaining. I'm looking forward to the 3rd movie. Minions was pretty bad.

Well, Whedon is currently doing the re-shoots/pick-ups for Justice League but I'm sure Warner is keen on getting Batgirl out by 2019. If The Batman also comes out that year, would make for a good one-two punch.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
So Baby Driver made $5.7m on Wednesday ($2.1m roll-over from Tuesday) and $3.3m on Thursday for a $9m total cume. Not spectacular but better than initially anticipated. Sony was thinking mid- to high- teens by Sunday, competitors think low- to mid- $20s. It was #1 for both days and looks like it could overtake Transformers this weekend (it'd be in 2nd behind DM3). Of course, it could also end up coming in 5th, not a huge span as Transformers, Cars 3 and Wonder Woman are all looking at roughly the same mid-to-high teens weekend gross.
Apparently Hollywood is watching it closely for a few reasons. One is apparently it's just well liked among movie executives. Two, it's a $34m budgeted, R-rated, non-franchise, original movie opening in a sea of tentpoles. Sort of a social experiment/study on seeing how it performs.
Despicable Me 3 made $4.1m yesterday (6 pm showings onward), The House made $800k

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
So why doesn't Tuesday's $$ count towards Tuesday? I've noticed that 'preview' nights are never counted for that night. Why not role that amount into the next day's official premier? Some sort of Hollywood numbers fudging practice to make the official 1st night seem larger?
