Movies that feature actual comic books

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books
Not a movie, but on the 24th episode of the tv show "The New Leave it to Beaver", Beaver and Wally's kids find some old Marvel comics in the attic. A couple of them I couldn't make out but there was an Amazong Spider-Man #22 and a Fantastic Four #1. They were planning to sell the FF one because they realized it was worth a lot, but June Cleaver ended up throwing them out.

In the first few minutes of Gus Van Sant's Drugstore Cowboy, Matt Dillon and his gang enter a drugstore in Portland. The screen cap below is taken from just after Heather Graham goes into the store (that's her hand that's in shot)...
This movie takes place in 1971. I can't make out the issue numbers of the titles, but I suspect the folks handling props weren't going for historical accuracy and used comics that were current at the time of the film's production, which would've been 1988 according to the making of documentary.
I was a casual comic book collector back then...casual enough that I can't identify the specific issues of the Marvel titles on the rack. The comic that really caught my attention, though, was Zell: Sword Dancer. I wasn't into independent comics, so I had never heard of Zell.
According to a write-up I found online, this was a one-issue wonder released in July 1986 by a small short-lived publisher called Thoughts & Images. Guess it didn't sell well if it were still on the racks in 1988. Zell was supposed to be an ongoing series but never made it past the first issue. The review I found states the 'sole redeeming factor of this comic is a one page story about Yusagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai on the back cover.'
Who would've thought that an obscure comic like this would be immortalized by none other than Gus Van Sant?

In the final scene of The Astral Factor (1978), Stefanie Powers is seen reading a copy of DC Super Stars #3 (May, 1975). There are also a couple of other comics on the end table and the couch.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books
In Ritual dos Sádicos (Awakening of the Beast) (1970) José Mojica Marins throws in a plug for the Coffin Joe comic book O Estranho Mundo de Zé do Caixão (which may have still been in publication when the film was made) by showing a few copies on a newsstand, and then showing a couple people reading them.
The first comic next to the sign appears to be O Estranho Mundo de Zé do Caixão #3 (April, 1969).
This woman appears to be reading a copy of O Estranho Mundo de Zé do Caixão #6 (July?, 1969). According to Google, only six issues and 1 special in this series were released.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books
Zach Galligan is reading a comic book in his first scene in Waxwork (1988), but he has it folded over and you can't see the cover. You do get a good look at an interior page however, and when he puts the book down on the table, you can see the title, Strange Tales.
Strange Tales was only around for about a year and a half during the '80s, so it wasn't hard to find the interior page in Strange Tales #8 (Nov, 1987).

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books
I don't think I posted this one already (I did a "search this thread" search and the title didn't come up).
I remember the character was always carrying around Horror magazines, but while sort of half watching it again tonight I saw a comic book. Near the end of My Mom's a Werewolf (1989), the "best friend" character is carrying what looks to me like a well-read copy of Swamp Thing #8 (Jan/Feb, 1974).
A Comics Scene magazine can be seen earlier in the movie, but I forgot to snag a shot of it.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books
In the CBS Afternoon Playhouse episode titled "Revenge of the Nerd" (1983), the main character's buddy is reading a Spider-Man comic.
We see page 15 of Spectacular Spider-Man #78 (May, 1983). Then, later in the episode, the main character has a Fantastic Four comic in his room.
I think it's Fantastic Four #254 (May, 1983).

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books
The Pop Show (1966) is a little over seven minutes of mid-1960's pop culture images set to music, so of course there's some comic book imagery (mostly Batman).
I didn't bother trying to identify sound effects or other images taken from interior comics pages, but at around 4:55 in there's a montage of comic book covers. Here's what I was able to identify:
Superboy # 115 (Sept.,1964)
Lois Lane #53 (Nov., 1964)
Hawkman #5 (Jan., 1964)
Batman #174 (Sep., 1965)
Daredevil#10 (Oct., 1965)
Flash#155 (Sep., 1965)
Atom#20 (Sep., 1965)
Journey Into Mystery#121 (Oct., 1965)
Aquaman #23 (Oct., 1965)
Green Lantern #39 (Sep., 1965)
Wonder Woman #156 (Aug., 1965)
Showcase #58 (Oct., 1965)
Capt. Storm #90 (Oct., 1965)
Batman #171 (May, 1965)
Flash #153 (Jun., 1965)

A character in Rock n' Roll Cowboys (1987) is reading a copy of Mad Special #59 (Summer '87) (or whatever number it had in Australia).

I don't know if this has been cited yet, but the little girl playing peek-a-boo with Joe Buck (Jon Voight) on the bus ride from Texas in MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969) is reading Wonder Woman #178, Sept.-Oct. 1968, featuring the "new" Wonder Woman.

^Yeah, I mentioned it on post #124, BUT the Tinypic link is long gone, of course. In that post, I also said:
*Paging Dim-X!*
Joe Buck later reads a comic book in Ratzo's place, but the cover's never shown (Don't have any screengrabs for it)

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books
But then I saw some better shots of the book a few moments later in the film,
and I thought...
You can sort of see the top of the cover, and guessing that the book came out around the same time as the Wonder Woman comic from earlier in the movie, I came up with this possibility:
Sub-Mariner #6 (Oct., 1968). Then I took a look at the inside pages, and found this:
It's page 8, to be precise.

From the movie Help!
There's a scene in Herman Wouk's Winds of War miniseries, where Jan Michael Vincent is reading some old 40's Superman comics.
