Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

One of the kids in Campfire Tales (1991) has a few comics.

Eerie #20 (Warren - March,1969), Eerie #21 (Warren - May,1969), and The Vault of Horror #2 (Gladstone - October, 1990).

The bedridden kid in Absurd (Horrible, Rosso sangue) (1981) does too.

Bugs Bunny #215 (Gold Key - December, 1979)

Batman #279 (September, 1976 ).

Here's a closer look (from a couple of different scenes in the movie) since it's not that obvious.
Spoiler:

And a couple of "iffy" ones -
Spoiler:

The fat kid in The Willies (1990) has Weird Science covers on his bedroom walls.

Spoiler:
I assume they're from the Weird Science Cover Portfolio (Russ Cochran - 1981). So not real comics.

In A Day of Thanksgiving (1951), sitting on top of a stack of magazines is a book that looks like a copy of Archie Comics #46 (Sep/Oct, 1950) to me.

Here's a comparison. See if you agree.
Spoiler:

^Currently looking at this with an iPad. So that's not gonna help at the moment.

Does anybody have a copy of The Man Without a Face? Nick Stahl's character is seen with a Thor comic and he's later reading a Batman comic with a very noticeable panel of Two Face.

Here you go.

Thor #144 (September, 1967)

Batman #234 (August, 1971) with the page he's reading and the cover. They obviously used pages from a reprint or something to get them that white (and the color is missing around Two Face and I think there's an extra page number at the bottom of the page), and
Spoiler:
the movie is set in 1968 (according to the radio announcer near the beginning), so they cheated a bit using this book.

Then later in the movie,

Classics Illustrated 128 (Twin Circle Promotional Edition - No cover price - 1968). When he opens the book, the interior art is all fake. Plus, on the rack, Brave and the Bold #78 (Jun/Jul, 1968), Detective Comics #383 (January, 1969), and Batman #192 (June, 1967).

I thought it was funny that they have a made up Uncanny X-Men cover in the latest Logan trailer.

I have all the Batman issues that Neal Adams drew and the first one he actually illustrated was a back up story in issue #219 and it was published in 1970. Now I'm wondering where they got that reprint page. I know that both Marvel and DC were doing a bunch of Adams reprints in the early 80's but I don't recall seeing a reprint of that story.

GCD says it was reprinted in The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told (1988).

A quick look at my copy shows the same coloring on that page (and the page number, page 183, is on the bottom in the same spot) as the one used in the film. so I'd say it's definitely taken from there.

Edit: Here's a scan of the reprint page and the shot from the movie.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

Another Mad Magazine on screen for a couple seconds.

Spoiler:

Kid in Hyperspace (Gremloids) (1984) is reading a copy of Mad Special #49 (Winter, 1984) (or possibly, Mad #204 (Jan, 1979), it's hard to make out anything but "M-A" on that front cover). Both issues have the same back cover.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

I don't think this would count as an actual comic book in a movie but I'm posting it anyways.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

A few blink-and-you'd-miss-them shots.

Early in Alice Sweet Alice (1976), you can see some comics on display in a store window.

Action Comics #344 (December, 1966) and Superman #205 (April, 1968) are reflected in the window.

Archie #146 (June, 1964)

Superboy #151 (October, 1968)

Marvel Special Edition Featuring Star Wars #1 (1977) and #3 (1978) are on the counter in the Blast from the Past store in in Tomorrowland (2015).

There were other comics in that scene too, but those were the most in your face.

During the opening credits of The Sentinel (1977), the main characters stop at a newsstand.

First we see copies of Charlton's The Six Million Dollar Man #2 and Space:1999 #7 (both September, 1976).

Then we get a quick look at a rack of comics.

Spoiler:

I was able to identify Love Diary #101 (Charlton - October, 1976), Marvel Two-in-One Annual #1 (1976), Marvel Classics Comics #9 (1976), and Green Lantern #91 (Oct/Nov 1976). I gave up on the rest of them, but they're all most likely real comics from the same time.

And lastly, here are some people reading comics, which may or may not be actual comics, since they don't show covers and/or the pictures aren't clear enough to identify them.

Spoiler:

Penitentiary (1979): The con in the back is reading a comic on the can. He's about to rip out a page to use for another purpose.

Magic Christmas Tree (1964): Fat kid and his dad are reading in the living room.

Quick (1993): Hotel clerk reading a comic.

Night Visitor (1989): Michael J. Pollard reading a comic.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

A fake comic ("Insectman") is shown earlier in City Limits (1984), but near the end of the movie, you can see this extra reading a copy of All-Star Squadron #26 (October, 1983).

Not a comic, but
Spoiler:
in Pale Blood (1990) they show this comic shop during a "L.A. nightlife" montage.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

I don't have a screen shot to share as I just watched this last night on Starz for the first time since it came out, but a shot of Bruce Willis in his apartment in THE FIFTH ELEMENT (1997) reveals that he's got a couple of manga volumes next to his bed: "Adolf" by Osamu Tezuka and "Sanctuary" by Sho Fumimura and Ryoichi Ikegami. Hard to believe 260-year-old manga issues would survive to just casually lay around a cramped apartment in 2263.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

Russian cyborg in Firehead (1991) enjoying Batman #443 (Jan, 1990).

Some comics can be seen on racks in the background in the general store in The Stuff (1985).

What I think I see back there.
Spoiler:

The New Adventures of Superboy #54 (June, 1984)
Daredevil #210 (Sept, 1984)
Daring New Adventures of Supergirl #22 (Aug, 1984)
Thor #328 (Feb, 1983)
Atari Force #3 (March, 1984)
Marvel Tales #153 (July, 1983)

Assuming paperback reprints count: Kid in Swap Meet (1979) flipping through a copy of MADvertising (Signet, 1972).

Last one for tonight: Superman fan in Dracula Blows His Cool (1979) pulls a rolled up comic from his back pocket in one scene, then later is seen looking at an Italian Vampirella book (Vampirella E... Alma di Dragon #6 1978).

Not my screen shots. I saw this on a streaming Roku channel, and I don't have a copy of this one, and couldn't find it online. Luckily I found these shots online.

Pornstore clerk in Sexplorer (The Girl from Starship Venus) (1975) looking over a copy of Billy the Kid #109 (Charlton - Oct, 1974).

A use-the-pause-button-or-you'll-probably-miss-it moment in Alligator (1980). When the camera zooms in on the "Sewer Psycho" headline, you can see a couple of DC comics above the newspaper.

Spoiler:

Green Lantern #132 and Warlord #37 (both Sep, 1980)

DX, I hope these super observational powers are also being used elsewhere. You can be finding terrorists in satellite maps or something.

But it only works if they're reading comic books.

I'll admit I missed the comics in Alligator while I was watching it. I went back to that scene after it was over specifically to look for comics on the newsstand, and hit the pause button and there they were.

But I do wonder why I seem to find so many more than anyone else. It's either because of the crap I watch, or I'm just the only one crazy enough to take the time to post screenshots.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

So last night the trailer for Maniac (1980) was playing for about the hundredth time on one of the streaming channels I watch, and I happened to look at the screen at the right time.

The one on the bottom looks like a copy of Richie Rich and Cadbury #10 (Nov, 1979). I gave up on the other two (but the one right on top of it could be another of the 15(!) Richie Rich titles released that same month).
