Movies that feature actual comic books

Just a project that I'm working on. Post pics if you've got any. Plus, name movies that have scenes that take place in comic book shops like Comic Book Villains or Chasing Amy. Remember, real books. Not ones made up for movies. Edit-I'm counting faux ones that became real books afterwards. Creepshow,Bluntman & Chronic...

Lost Boys

When We Were Kings

Hitcher in the Dark

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

I always hate it when they have to use generic independent comics in place of actual Marvel or DC comics. I recognize it's a rights issue but that always pulls me out of the movie.

Opening pre-credits scene in Superman. I'm assuming this is an actual book.

Actually, I am almost positive the comic seen in Superman's opening credits is not an actual published comic book. That was a mock-up made for the movie.

Reservoir Dogs, no? Didn't Mr. Orange have some Marvel comics in his room?

Coyote Ugly

Someone really needs to teach that dude how to handle his valuable comics though.

Thanks for the confirmation

Posters. I'll save the image tho

While we're on the Tarantino tip, True Romance, but I don't know what the book on the 2nd pic is. Any experts on that one?

Ah, that's right. Even Tobey Maguire (In his Peter Parker voice) mentions Reed Richards outloud. Somebody should've thrown that audio clip on one of those Marvel fan vids. Maybe someone already did?

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In WEST SIDE STORY (1961), Baby John (one of the Jets) is reading a comic book, but I don't recall a closeup of it. And in a bit of dialogue, he indicates that it's Captain Marvel, which was no longer being published by then, although the comic book in the shot itself could have been legit, just not Captain Marvel.

The dialogue in the play went like this:
BABY JOHN
He don't use knives. He don't even use an atomic ray gun.

A-RAB
Superman. Gee, I love him.
But in the movie, he said "Captain Marvel" and it was Baby John who said the line.

I know I've seen other old movies with comic books, but it's been so long since I've seen them or thought about them that I can't recall them offhand. The Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis comedy, ARTISTS AND MODELS (1955) is about a comic book artist and takes place at the offices of a comic book publisher, but I don't recall if they used any real comic book covers in it.

P.S. I just did a google search for this topic and found that a 1958 issue of DC's Gang Busters was used in STAND BY ME.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

The Mist, Thomas Jane gives his character's son a Hellboy comic book.

American Sniper, I think one guy was reading a Punisher comic on his bed.

Captain America: The First Avenger, has people reading Captain America #1.

Breathless (Richard Gere), I think one of youse said he reads a Silver Surfer comic in there.

Million Dollar Baby, Freeman reads a comic... I think it was called Mystic... never heard of that one.

RoboCop, Murphy's son and the crook at the liquor store both had comics.

An American Werewolf in London, kid reads a Laurel and Hardy comic in the hospital. I think the main lead guy reads a comic in there too. Dunno.

Poltergeist, the son reads a Captain America in there.

The Departed, Nicholson's character buys the kid some food and some comics. I remember the one on top being a Wolverine one.

Unbreakable, has a shit ton of comics in there.

Iron Giant, the kid shows off a Spirit comic. I think we saw an Action Comics in there too.

Mallrats, has some scenes with comics.

Chasing Amy, flashes a lot of comics in there.

Friday The 13th-Part III (I never even knew there were comic books in this shot untill I finally saw the widescreen version in the mid-2000s)

Thanks for the Flash, MTU and the Sleepwalker identification, guys.

I actually thought that was a young Christopher Nolan in the middle of that Jay/Silent Bob pic.

Never knew about this one. Went off to Netflix it, but of course it's on "Save". Basturds.

Thanks. Found it.

That comic looks pretty beat up for being "Brand new" in the 50's. But I'll give 'em a break and say that it actually came out in the 40's.

That should've been one of the first to pop into mind. Gotta dig through that disc tonight.

Bad Boys (Sean Penn, not Will Smith). The instructor of the reform school makes the inmates read comic books.

On is right shoulder. And next to Killing Joke is Batman: A Death in the Family.

Kick Ass has a mixture of fake and real.

The Sunaways is the Runaways, but that's obviously a Mignola Hellboy poster.

I was a Sleepwalker fan too. He showed up years later in that Marvel Team-Up series the 40-Year-Old Virgin is reading.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

Nightmare in Blood (1977) has a couple of scenes in a comic book shop. Here's a sample shot:

Goldilocks and the Three Bares (1963) has a scene in a drug store where you can see a huge comic rack. Here's a composite shot I posted sometime back in a comic book thread (I must've deleted the actual screenshots, but I can grab one if you want) I found the original screenshots on my old computer:

Spoiler:

Sticking with Herschell Gordon Lewis, here's a character in Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964) reading Heart Throbs #87 (DC - Dec/Jan 1963):

In Joysticks (1983), that guy from Miami Vice is seen enjoying a copy of Swamp Thing #21 (DC - Feb/Mar 1976):

EDIT: You can see a Howard the Duck comic (along with the backs of several others) in Halloween (1978):
