re: Leatherface (2017) -- Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel
I dunno I sort of like the first three at least. Leatherface (not this new film) is a fun slasher at least even if it really doesn't have much to do with the original. The remake actually wasn't bad either in my opinion. The Next Generation is a piece of shit and I don't think I ever saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Honestly I didn't completely hate Texas Chainsaw 3D like a lot of people do. The biggest issue with it to me is that it tries to tie itself to the original and doesn't do a very good job. Aside from that it's s watchable enough dumb horror film.
Next Gen is a godawful piece of shit. It feels like Leatherface is wandering through three or four different, unrelated movies. The only good thing about is Wooderson chewing up the place like a methed-up termite.
The remake and prequel are actually quite good and fare better than the remakes of NOES, F13, and Halloween.
Haven't seen the newest one yet.

Leatherface rules. Period. I'm a big fan of Jeff Burr anyway, but I thought he did a great job creating a dreadful atmosphere, with colorful characters and nasty deaths, all beautifully shot and done amidst major studio interference.
The remake holds up quite well, but I still hate the fact they allowed Leatherface to get his arm chopped off.
The prequel is actually pretty damn nasty and works way better than it's given credit for. I love the bleak ending, too.
TCM 3D is a bad '90s horror movie made in 2013. And I kinda like that. Sure, the story is total crap... but I sort of liked how they turned Leatherface into an anti-hero. You don't often get the chance to really root for horror icons, and I thought the cheesy moments of his triumph were fun stuff.
I expect this new movie to be absolutely awful, but I have to say I'm a bigger fan of the overall TCM series than most people seem to be, and I always look forward to seeing what's coming up next.

Yeah, Texas Chainsaw 3D totally feels like 90's DTV horror. I do like the sequel set-up at the end, though. Too bad they didn't follow it up.

I know most of them suck, but this is one of the only horror franchises where I don't own all the films, and this thread is making me want to rectify that in time for October.

I don't even own the original yet for some reason I do have The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 remake), and Texas Chainsaw 3D on Blu-ray.

My order of preference:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (74)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake)
Texas Chainsaw 3D
Texas Chainsaw: The Next Generation
I only rewatch the first two, but Leatherface, The Beginning and the remake contain some strong sequences. The less said about TNG (though I love MM's over the top performance) and 3D the better.
I was mildly excited when i heard that Bustillo & Maury would be helming the new film, but the storyline just sounds dreadful....and that poster.

re: Leatherface (2017) -- Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel
The long-awaited prequel to Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre finally has an official release date after holding a premiere at the forthcoming FrightFest in London.
Bloody Disgusting learned today that Leatherface will be an exclusive DirecTV release on September 21, 2017, with a limited theatrical run and full VOD release through Lionsgate revved up for October 20, 2017!
Leatherface is rated R “for strong bloody violence, disturbing images, language and some sexuality/nudity.” Millennium Films is listed as the distributor, although Lionsgate had originally been set to release the film. No word on where this stands.
In Leatherface, Jessica Madsen plays one of four inmates (Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, James Bloor) who escapes from a mental hospital. One of them becomes the title character and iconic slasher. The quartet kidnaps a young nurse (played by Vanessa Grasse) and takes her on a road trip from hell. Along the way, they are pursued by an equally deranged lawman (Stephen Dorff) out for revenge. The Conjuring‘s Lili Taylor is Verna Sawyer.
Leatherface was directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, the duo behind the slasher masterpiece Inside (À l’intérieur), as well as Livide and Among the Living.
When we talked with the filmmakers, they told us the film is “a brutal and nihilistic road movie that we hope will surprise and delight the fans…”

I'm sure this has been bumped around for one obvious reason: it's shit. That still isn't going to stop me from checking this out anyway I can come Sept. 21st.

So this one will join The Next Generation as the only two TCM movies without a wide theatrical release, correct? That probably doesn't bode well. Or, in other words...

Re: Leatherface (2017) -- Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel
Just watched this and OH BOY it is ever a steaming pile of shit. I mean, there isn't a single redeeming factor to the entire 1 hour and 24 minutes (that feels at least twice as long).
If you love:
- unnecessary origin stories
- retconned Mommy issues
- terrible acting
- jump scares
- YELLING
- epileptic editing
- torture porn gore
- zero characterization
- a score consisting only of screeching violins
- wondering how three fully grown people could fit inside a cow carcass
then this is your movie. I have stuck with the TCM series through a lot of shit but a film called "Leatherface" should, you know, feature Leatherface. Instead, we play a game of misdirection for an hour until it's revealed - very poorly - who is the titular character. The chainsaw doesn't come out until there are 10 minutes left and even then, it's being wielded by a kid who looks like he finished shooting an Abercrombie ad last weekend.
Fuck every single thing about this film. Well, I guess Dorff is alright but he def can't save this.

I don't think I ever saw 3D. That wasn't the one with Jessica Biel, was it?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the most fucked-up franchise, continuity-wise, that exists.
Every movie is some kind of remake, reboot, or retcon.
Jesus Christ, they're movies about a guy in mask killing people with a chainsaw. It's not The Godfather.

No that was the remake from 2003. Texas Chainsaw 3D was the one from 2013 that's supposed to be a direct sequel to the original. Alexandra Daddario was in Texas Chainsaw 3D. Honestly it wasn't that bad but most people didn't like it much.

Re: Leatherface (2017) -- Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel
Some good gore and a decent ending are the only things keeping this from being the worst film in the franchise. God awful.
It's either this or Next Generation.

Really? Because the last one, "Texas Chainsaw 3D", was fucking putrid too. The worst I've seen. I don't think I'll bother with this one.

Re: Leatherface (2017) -- Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel
Absolute dogshit. I can see why this was bounced around so much and eventually just released on VOD. I couldn't finish it - I was so bored with it I started checking my email about 35-40 minutes into it, and cut it off shortly thereafter. I enjoy the series as a whole and I've even been able to finish the bad ones (TCM:NG, 3D) but this didn't even feel like a TCM movie. Agree with all of islandclaws critiques, although I can't vouch for the last 10 minutes because I didn't make it that far. Maybe I'll try again one day, but I doubt it.
