Cavill could have been a great Superman. He was never the problem but he was given shitty scripts to work with.

The DCEU is a joke. It really is amazing how bad they’ve managed to fuck it up. Losing your Superman actor, your Batman actor probably isn’t far behind. A universe that is barely tied together anymore and has random offshoots happening. Just a mess.

I don't see how you're getting that? It directly says they were trying to negotiate him into the movie and it didn't work out: Warners had been trying to enlist Cavill for a Superman cameo in Shazam!, which stars Zachary Levi and will bow April 5. But contract talks between Cavill's WME reps and Warners broke down, and the door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances.

re: Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

That's because the studio has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine. This effectively removes an actor of Cavill's age from the storyline's equation given that Superman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore.

Furthermore, Warners isn't likely to make a solo Superman film for at least several years, according to another source. "Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors," says a studio source. As such, Cavill will join Ben Affleck, who isn't expected to reprise his role for director Matt Reeves' forthcoming Batman stand-alone film, as a hero on the way out.
Uh, what? If these rumors are true, they think a Supergirl standalone movie is going to carry that franchise (because it worked so well last time) and that Superman is like James Bond and needs to be changed up every, what, three movies? I mean, that kind of thinking works well for standalone superhero movies but not if you're trying to build any kind of cohesive shared movie universe. And if they're giving up on that, screw them, because then we'll never see another JL movie again.

Cavill should totally do a cameo as Hyperion now, though.

He seemed to call all this last month in regards to salary, using Supergirl as a bargaining tool, etc.

Yeah, I remember that, it's just inconceivable to me that they would shelve Superman for Supergirl. And I'm a big fan of Supergirl pre-new-52, even when they had no idea what to do with her when they originally brought her back and sidelined PAD's version. But both should be able to co-exist.

That’s actually where my brain went with this news as well, and Cavill’s stock has gone way up since he was originally considered.

#teamcavill

Hey, at least Gadot may be safe in the DCUE since her character is ancient and still looks like a 30something....

re: Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

Well this stinks if true. Superman is by far my favorite comic character and I thought Cavill was a fantastic Superman despite the scripts and execution not being equal overall to his portrayal.

Cavill might have been my favorite Superman overall because he had the build and the look down at least for me and even with the limitations of the scripts and directing, the charisma and likability still came through.

Not a shock but still disappointing to this fan.

Update 2: Warner Bros. has issued the following statement in regards to this story:

“While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”

I thought he was great in it. How he approached that character should have been how he did his Clark.

"and we wish him best in his future endeavors."

Oh wait, they didn't say that part yet.

I didn't even realize he was British. Aren't the supposedly casting a Captain Britain and the Black Knight movie?

Marvel should swoop in and cast him as Captain Britain

I just checked out the linked Supergirl thread.

That's crazy but also interesting, if they mentioned a proposed Supergirl film as bargaining tool to Cavill's demand for more pay.

They're probably arguing that, because of the success of Wonder Woman, and of course Marvel's upcoming Captain Marvel film, the public wants to see more female superheroes.

re: Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

I was prepared for his exit but I've enjoyed Cavill as Superman. I think he could have been a great Superman under a different director. The problem is that Warner puts some of the blame from Justice League on Cavill. Hollywood execs believe a real box office draw can overcome a badly scripted movie and they don't see Cavill being worth his salary demands. I actually think he's been one of the few positives to come from the Snyder movies.

I'm fairly sure that Cavill is at the top of the list for Bond now that Superman is over. I think he would make an excellent Bond. Man From UNCLE was a great trial run.

As for Supergirl, I dread seeing what Warner will cook up for the character. Personally, I think it's an insane move to build a Superman franchise around her. She's only getting a full greenlight if Wonder Woman 2 and then Captain Marvel perform well at the box office.

You didn't see the end where he twisted the action figure's head off?

I really like The Man From U.N.C.L.E. too. The problem with it as mentioned is that it was a pretty obscure franchise to expect a hit out of. Cavill is great in it. Also liked him a lot in the latest Mission: Impossible.
