Wasn’t the point of the Grail that it caused everlasting life of anyone who drank from it? Seems like a pretty devastating problem for the rest of the world if Hitler and his Nazi goons drank from it.

Technically, Indy and his father should live forever since they drank from it but it was all negated when Elsa crossed the seal with it.

I think it was when anybody crossed the seal. You could drink from the grail and have eternal life, but only in that cave. So, like, even if the Nazis did get it, they couldn't do anything with it outside of the cave.

If that's the case, then what's the point of even taking it out of the cave in the first place, or reaching for it and falling to your death (which even Indy almost did), if it doesn't work anywhere else?

I guess I never really put much thought into but I suppose I was under the impression that although the grail itself needed to stay in the cave (not cross the seal) anyone who drank from it could come and go with those benefits intact. Essentially Hitler and his posse could come into the cave, drink from the grail and stroll out to do Nazi stuff around the world with everlasting life. As long as the grail stayed behind the seal, it’s effects were intact. Only when the grail crossed the seal, did all the everlasting life benefits stop.

Either that or Hitler just wanted the completely useless Holy Grail on his shelf as a knick-knack.

was it known it couldn't be removed from the cave until they actually found it?

Jones Sr even says about Elsa "she thought she'd found a prize." I think you could infer Donovan felt the same way - and even though he believed in the chance of eternal life, he had no idea how it worked. Just as Marcus told him "you're meddling with powers you cannot possibly comprehend."

The knight that was in there told Indy it couldn't cross the seal. Nobody else knew. Indy told Elsa what the knight said but she didn't listen.

There is early dialog where Indy tells Donavan the the knights that left the cave died of extremely old age - so it appears eternal life is only within the cave but you receive some indeterminate longevity once you leave from there

Didn't the knights put it in the the cave and create the booby traps specifically to protect the grail though? How did its powers become tied to that one specific location?

Plus the Knight that actually stayed behind in the cave didn’t look like he faired much better than the ones who left. The dude couldn’t even pick up a sword at the point Indy found him.

So what’s the point of living forever if after only a few hundred years you’ve already turned into a husk of a man?

'Indiana Jones 5' Enlists Mads Mikkelsen
APRIL 15, 2021 9:44AM by Aaron Couch

Mads Mikkelsen is headed to Indiana Jones 5, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Harrison Ford reprises his iconic title role, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge joining the Disney franchise for the next installment. Logan filmmaker James Mangold takes over directing duties over from Steven Spielberg, who helmed the first four installments.

Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel will serve as producers on the film. John Williams returns to score. Indiana Jones 5 has a release date of July 29, 2022.

Mikkelsen's lengthy credits include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Doctor Strange and Casino Royale. He is also in Warner Bros.' upcoming third Fantastic Beasts movie, stepping in to play Gellert Grindelwald after Johnny Depp's exit.

Mikkelsen is repped by UTA. Deadline first reported the news of Mikkelsen's casting.

Wait, did we know that Spielberg wasn't directing before now?
That was my concern, as the last Spielberg film I saw (Ready Player One) was very disappointing.

Mangold has been attached as director for well over a year.

Shows how much I’ve been paying attention. I guess the last one left such a blah impression that I just didn’t care to check.

You stay in the cave to guard the grail.

When I was watching this movie for the first time, I thought that Henry Jones Sr. would stay behind to become the new guardian of the grail, and relieve the old knight so he could leave the cave.

I wonder if that was ending was ever considered for the movie. There are some hints sprinkled throughout the movie that might foreshadow that -- Henry Jones' faith, his obsession with the grail, etc.

re: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023, D: Mangold) S: Ford - News, rumors, etc.

EXCLUSIVE: Boyd Holbrook and The Resident alum Shaunette Renée Wilson are set to co-star opposite Harrison Ford in the next installment in the Indiana Jones series at Disney and Lucasfilm. Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen are also on board. James Mangold is taking over directing reins from Steven Spielberg, who still is serving as a producer and is very much involved in various elements of the film. Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel will join Spielberg as producers. John Williams, who has worked on every score in the 40-year-old franchise including its iconic theme, also will return as composer.

The hope is to start production this summer, with Mangold meeting with other talent for other roles in preparation for production. Plot details are still vague on what new adventure awaits Jones, as are details behind who Holbrook and Wilson will play. The film is set to bow on July 29, 2022.

I keep finding it odd that they say "next installment" instead of "last".

Does it matter though?
Not saying I'd want another one a few years after this one, but I don't need to see Indy saying "goodbye" to everyone and then dying at the end either.

Disney he barely capitalized on this franchise. I’m guessing that this will be the last installment with Ford/Spielberg involved. Pretty soon, nature is going to make the decision for them to end their run. But I can imagine “Indiana Jones” will continue down the road with a different actor. Whether it’s a prequel or an entirely rebooted franchise, Indy is too big to let die.

Apparently, Shia wasn’t the answer.

Didn't they come Lucasfilm come out and say that they wouldn't make any more Indiana Jones movies without Harrison Ford?

Considering Ford's age and the amount of time needed to get these things in front of a camera, I don't see a sixth one coming up.
