A nihilist R-rated horror movie from a famous writer with an indeterministic atheist view of the universe from an iconoclastic director who'd need lots of money to make it? Don't see that happening.

It was close to happening though. Cameron was going to produce and Cruise was going to lead it.
Fuck. That would have been one of the most "original" things to come out out of the big studios.

Del Toro has gotten a sequel greenlit. Coming April 7, 2017.

Much better choice of release month. I hope this one has better human drama, although if Hunnam is the sole male lead without a competent actor to work against, I won't be expecting much.
Also, if Legendary has this scheduled for 2017, that almost certainly means Godzilla 2 will drop May '18.

^^ Hoping now we'll see an extended cut on blu that fleshes out the first movie. I'm glad they set a date for the sequel, I will definitely be looking forward to a sequel.

Del Toro told BuzzFeed on Thursday that original screenwriter Travis Beacham would also be working on the new script.
“The characters I love will return,” del Toro told BuzzFeed. “Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

They should get Perlman to play someone else. It'd be awesome for him to be a Jaeger pilot.
For the love of white baby Jesus please focus a bit more on the international pilots and show full fights in the day.

I got the impression that he would take over the leadership role at the end of the first movie.

I'd be happy if they dropped both scientist guys, but I guess I won't be so lucky. I hope they get toned down, even if they didn't bother me quite as much when I watched the movie again on blu-ray that they did in theaters.
