Stuckmann didn't like it. Gave it a C-
He says that if all you care about is Monsters and Mechs fighting with cool special effects, you'll probably be entertained.

Movie reviewers are the worst.
Just saw it. It moves at a brisk pace, not much exposition and plenty of fighting. Agreed, much more fun than Transformers. Lean and mean, with giant robots. Just what I was looking for.

This was such a huge piece of shit I don't even have the inclination to point out every problem. Easily one of the worst theater experiences of my life. Painfully bad.

It's OK. They specifically stated that all the residents of the city had made it underground and were safe. (This immediately after specifically showing large numbers of people get stranded on the surface because they didn't make it to the "pod".)
I am getting a kick out of the fact that films now feel it necessary to expressly state "everybody has been evacuated" before engaging in the demolition of a city/building.

Re: Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018, D: DeKnight) S: Boyega
Today I watched a sci-fi sequel about a young hot-headed pilot trying to get his military career back on track following "an incident" that resulted in putting his partner in danger. The partners are reunited and jokingly jockey for a young lady's affections. One member of our heroic duo is a young black man trying to live up to the name he carries, as his now-dead heroic father was an integral part of repelling the previous alien invasion. After the giant aliens attack and destroy the hero's base, goofy scientists (who serve as comedic relief) are an integral part of developing the plan to win the final battle. But enough about Independence Day 2 ...
Pacific Rim: Uprising is a decent enough way to kill part of a rainy day. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it was missing the "soul" of Pacific Rim.
While Cailee Spaeny does a fine job, I didn't care for the feel of the "Pacific Rim: Disney Jr. Cadet Corps" (including at least one actual Disney actor). Scott Eastwood is, well, Scott Eastwood. John Boyega attempts to charm with his natural British accent, but the only real charm is his British accent.
The treatment of the Mako character was horrendous, considering they essentially replaced her with another character/actress. Speaking of, I take it the ending was re-shot and they goofed (or I missed something). Pentecost and Amara climb out of the mini-Jaeger and romp in the snow ... what happened to Shao?
For as good as the special effects looked, the group of Kaiju rambling through Japan looked terrible. I think it was more the creature design than the CG, but for some reason the three of them advancing together looked like something from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I'm not sure if it was the reddish coloring or what, but it just looked weird. Anybody else notice this?
Another random observation: was it just me, or did Newt take over Hannibal Chau's wardrobe?

I saw a matinee today. I will say this will satisfy anyone who has a hard on for action & destruction porn. There is plenty of it, especially in the 2nd half of the movie.
Character development and have an emotional investment in them? Well, you can forget about that here. I would say most of the characters here are disposable and forgettable. it does lack some of the heart of the 1st movie.
Once it got to the battle scenes, the movie moved pretty briskly and kept me engaged.
Also, I feel like this movie was made for the Asian market. Lots of scenes in Japan and lots of Chinese actors and Mandarin dialogue.
I liked it mainly because I was into stuff like this as a kid seeing some of these live action Japanese robot shows growing up.
and really? Making Charlie Day

I thought it wasnt great. Just a really fun movie that expanded on the universe from the first one. I watched the first one the night before watching the sequel and I have to say that I liked how different each of the movies felt. They felt like they were in a different time period with very different states of peril that the world is in which expanded the universe I think. The transition from night to day was appreciated too. Not because its better. I loved the sfx in the original. But because its different. Its not a popcorn movie thats going to make you think, or stay with you but it doesnt forget what a movie like this should be. Fun. I really wish the Transformers was like this in that the character design and the action are very easy to follow. The pacing is good and it doesnt take itself too seriously. Kind of feels like a cheesy 90s action flick in a good way. I can see why critics didnt like it. Its not so much of a good movie as it is a fun one.

Saw this today at a second-run theater for $3.25
I didn't have high expectations, so the film was enjoyable for me purely for the Robot Vs. Kaiju action. I really liked a few of the new Jaeger designs.
Other than that, I felt like the film had too many underdeveloped characters and plot points.

I wasn't that big of a fan of the first Pacific Rim, and frankly not a huge of fan of Guillermo Del Toro in general, but it was at least passably entertaining. This sequel was mind-numbingly dumb in a Transformers kind of way, though going in favor of Uprising, it had the courtesy of being 30-40 minutes shorter and I did like John Boyega, he had more development here than in The Last Jedi and the character was utilized better than, say, Jesse T. Usher in Independence Day Resurgence (son of a fallen hero stepping up the save the day).
Other than that, I really didn't enjoy the film nor cared about any of the supporting roles or the "plot" itself. Oh, and Charlie Day is such an overrated actor and hams it up, but that's par for the course for him.
2.25/5

Just watched this since I got it cheap.
Yeah, I was right in my original comment when I aid it was being aimed at the YA crowd. The visual FX were fine but GDT was definitely missed. It's as if he just told DeKnight to do his thing and peace out.
I'm somewhat glad I didn't see it at the theater - I probably would have hated it even more. As it stands, it's a mediocre film.

Frankly, these type of films need to show MORE death so we actually get the impact of Robots, Kaiju, Superheroes battles, etc.

Watching it on HBO and enjoying it more than ever. If it helps those of you who didn't like it.... view it as a generic Anime and it works. The Japanese use the same formulas/Tropes this film used over and over in their anime and no one calls them on their shit about it. In fact, fans yell for more of the same old shit.

Now THAT has me interested ...
I suppose I should give this another watch. I really like the first one, but just didn't care for this one in the theater. I may have been riding too hard off the debacle of the Independence Day sequel though (as evidenced by my initial reaction post). This could be dumb fun ... could.
