Unlike Aquaman, Namor gayass speedo or not, never really got turned into a bitch. Big difference. Aquaman got played to be a weak ass and boring guy. Namor got better marketing. Namor wins in pop culture.

I was confused as to why they mentioned him flying. I don't know why I added that. I was just typing away. It may seem like he can depending on how some imagery portrays him but I don't think he can. I think did in Super Friends.

Also the thing about Namor is that he had a much more entertaining personality. The guy is a womanizing asshole who will help those in need but will fuck you over immediately if you dare cross him.

The difference between Aquaman and Namor is that Namor never got the Super Friends treatment in pop culture. Honestly, he's barely got any portrayals in pop culture to speak of, so all we really have to go off of is the comics, where he is a badass. Only comic geeks really know who Namor is, but everyone knows Aquaman is the guy who talks to fish.

Namor is a bad dude though. He was a villain in Fantastic Four. Given that he's the "talk to fish guy" on the Marvel end, he's actually pretty badass, relatively.

Namor has a much cooler line he shouts in battle. "Imperius Rex!" I hear that Aquaman yells "Fishsticks!"

I'd argue that just about everything that has been done with the character in the last 30 years has been a reaction his public perception. Every five years or so the Aquaman comic gets a reboot or a "bold new direction" designed to make him seem cool. I honestly believe that if the character hadn't become the butt of so many jokes in the wake of Super Friends (thus never giving the Aquaman defenders a reason to lose their minds), he would have just faded away into the background and no one would particularly care.

You know, every time someone posts a panel or two from comics I remember why I don't read them. Whether it's in this thread or just some random comic panel posted online, they always seems incredibly silly to me, like eye rolling ridiculous.

Yes the big two publishers are constantly using gimmicks like new #1's and the like to get people to buy. However, most of the time it's just a gimmick and it's easy to see that the characters at hand will never fundamentally change. Sure Marvel might be trotting out a female Thor now, but it's not like the old Thor won't be back. The same thing is true for characters like Spider-Man or Batman or the X-Men. No matter what stunts they pull to increase sales, in the end nothing will really change because people love those characters and have a very specific idea of what those characters are.

On the other hand, a character like Aquaman is constantly being tweaked and reimagined because nothing has been able to supercede the silver age/Super Friends version in the collective conscious. Everything done with the character in the last 30 years has seemingly been an attempt to turn people's preconceived notions on their head. Since it never sticks, a few years later they try it again. There's nothing wrong with that either. I just don't get why people feel like posting pages from some comic and ranting about how awesome he is will change anything.

Because one of the changes finally stuck with someone and they like the character now? I will be the first to admit that it has only been Johns work in the past 3 years that has really made me like Aquaman as a major character. And that's the point like you said, keep tweaking till it works.

I think we are at a good standard for Aquaman now. He confronted the lameness very early on, squashed that nonsense, and is a badass.
