It's just that most people base their opinion of Aquaman from an old ass cartoon from decades ago. It's like if people still based their opinion of Batman based upon the Adam West series.
Modern Aquaman has as much in common with Super Friends Aquaman as modern Batman has in common with Adam West Batman. Which is to say absolutely nothing at all.

What is it about Aquaman that gets people so worked up? There was another dude who used to post here and anytime someone would post something about how Aquaman sucks, he would proceed to post full comic pages of Aquaman doing "cool" stuff to prove that he didn't in fact suck.
Personally, I never cared that much for either Aquaman or Namor; neither are visually interesting to me, nor is the whole water based powers and backgrounds particularly intriguing anyway. I think making fun of Aquaman is just funny, especially since some people get worked up about it and defensive.
Plus, what kind of shitty power is talking to fish anyway?

I'm not sure what Silver age Aquaman was but Super Friends somehow kept his shit image around strongly. Looking around I also found this...

<iframe width="640" height="480" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/sUfET1HoSx0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Anyone know why Timm didn't really do much with him? He was an alright character when he was there. He just wasn't used much.

The Aquaman & Friends Action Hour aired on Cartoon Network Latin America in 2003 and was produced by Wild Hare Studios of Atlanta, GA.[3] The show, which lasted 7 episodes, was a parody of Aquaman's appearances on the Super Friends animated series. In this series, Aquaman is now the host of children's television series. He is being pursued by the Legion of Doom, who had spent their entire operating budget on attempts to conquer the world and now have to rent out parts of The Hall of Doom as apartments to generate income.[4] Aquaman was chosen as the lead character in this parody series because the producers were not allowed to use the full cast of the Super Friends due to Justice League airing in the United States.[5] The series is separate from the Cartoon Network commercials that aired in the United States that featured Aquaman and Wonder Woman being saved from the Legion of Doom by The Powerpuff Girls and the Aquaman Dance Party commercials that aired during Adult Swim.

Maybe that casting news is for a different Bat character with red hair.

For whatever reason Aquaman is like Robin. Meaning that people still associate them with character portrayals that are 40 years old. Aquaman being played by Mamoa was honestly a brilliant idea even if he doesn't look like comic book Aquaman.
And he doesn't talk to fish people!

Well it just depends on what you call fish people, mate.
found this in my attempt to find fish people...
The casting is great. Something to visually put him apart him from the bad pop culture rap he's got.

I doubt Aquaman is still around in the comics if not for his infamous appearances on Super Friends. He could barely carry his own solo title in the comics and worked much better when he was a member of the Justice League. The only reason he got included for the Justice League movie is the inevitable aquatic battle scene, which Hollywood loves more dearly than almost anything else since they are very popular in foreign markets.
I don't think Robin will have much of a role in this movie. That casting was done more for the solo Batman movies and a possible Titans movie. I expect this Batman will have had three or four Robins in his career. Expect to hear Nightwing's name dropped in a throwaway line.

Yeah, when the New 52 first launched Aquaman was in the top ten sales for a few months. Not a single Marvel title was in the top ten then, and I remember the hilarity of Aquaman outselling everything at Marvel, including Spider-Man, X-Men, and Avengers.

Also, saying that Aquaman could barely carry his own title is just ignorant. He has had his own title since the 1960s. It may not always be high-selling, but it's done well enough to last for 50 years. When's the last time Namor had his own title...
Oh and there are also TWO Aquaman titles being published right now. Just think about that for a minute. He is currently popular enough to have two titles. Very few characters are ever that popular...

They should make an Aquaman vs Ant Man movie to find out who the true king of laughable characters that won't translate cinematically is.

"Man a talking tree and racoon? That's stupid!"
"Ahhh Groot and Rocket are awesome!"
Hopefully a good portrayal for Aquaman has the same effect.

At least Groot and Rocket could start fresh. With Momoa's casting it'll visually set him apart from the Aquaman norm.

Let the speculation begin:
Sounds like it will be pulling from all the 52 stories
Also:
Holy smokes! Possible $5m fine for Batman extra who leaked female Robin
Jena Malone said to be playing Carrie Kelley in Superman v Batman, Zack Snyder’s followup to Man of Steel – information that could cost extra who broke non-disclosure agreement

We've been told that 2018's AQUAMAN starring Jason Momoa will also feature Mera, Orm, Black Manta and THE TRENCH!

No surprise. Seems they're basically pulling style and story from the New 52 save apparently for Batman.
BTW, good luck collecting that fine

I'm not a huge fan of Aquaman having a harpoon/hook hand. I hope they don't use that in the film universe unless Aquaman is so wildly successful it merits a sequel.

Wonder Woman wouldn't have sustained a monthly series if not for the contract obligation DC was under to continually publish her if they wanted to keep her rights. So you can't knock Aquaman without knocking her.
I don't think it's just the Super Friends portrayal, it's his power set. He's ruler of the oceans, and the oceans cover 75% of the earth, but 99% of comics happen on land or in space. Look at the rest of them: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (runs and moves very fast), Green Lantern (can make anything with his imagination). His best runs have usually coincided with him being a jerk and not much of a team player (and I like Peter David). When he's on a team, what is he supposed to do unless their mission calls for them to go underwater?
To be fair, I think Hawkman has similarly lame powers (as does Atom). Of course, in the hands of a great writer you'll get great characterization, but powers-wise these guys lost out.

What the hell kind of crazy story will this fucking movie have to have in order to not just squeeze in, but introduce all these characters?

I swear if they just kept these as little cameos and easter eggs, people would be happy and surprised by the inclusion in the movie, and I don't know if they feel the need to drum up interest or if you just can't keep anything secret these days, or both.

I'm guessing cameos for most of them. Maybe we see Arthur Curry watching a news broadcast at a pier side bar, Vic Stone playing football, and Diana appears in a mid-credits stinger.
