Mary Louise-Parker is competing with herself as well with R.I.P.D. and Red 2. She might not be too happy about that either, but Ryan Reynolds gets the brunt of it.

I would suggest going the Ben Affleck route, but I don't know if the guy can direct. |

Box Office Prophets is predicting a $42M opening for The Conjuring based on the $17M it took in Friday night. Good news for Warner.
R.I.P.D. is D.O.A. :D $130M spent for that POS? |
Re: The Weekend of Too Many Flops? Box Office Thread 7/17 - 7/21
Ryan Reynolds is Dane Cook with a little bit more luck. And that luck has ran out.

 loving all the ryan reynolds hate - never been a fan. always said he was a poor man's jason lee (well, when jason lee was jason lee). only movie i like that he's been in is ADVENTURELAND and he played a douche in that movie so i imagine he wasn't acting very hard.
oh and BURIED isn't half bad. |

oh and BURIED isn't half bad. It's interesting when you compare him to another Canadian named Ryan. Gosling and him are nearly the same age, both got their start on children's television, started their film careers in smaller roles, they've fucked the same women, and then the shift occurs. Whereas Reynolds has chosen mostly shit comedies, big budget action films, and the occasional independent flick; Gosling has chosen to do mostly smaller features. While Gosling really hasn't had a hit film (The Notebook and Crazy Stupid Love both did $80M domestically), he has proven to be a great actor whereas Reynolds hasn't really done anything. Even Gosling's worst films tend to be better than Reynolds' best. |

I never had anything against him. Like another member had said: I thought he was the second coming of Jason Lee back in the day. I love "Two Guys, A Girl, and A Pizza Place." He has done some good flicks along with some awful flicks. Granted, he seems to latch on projects that he he thinks will propel his career forward (superstardom) even if they're shit projects. He needs to start picking more wisely.

Ah, the little indie film kicking the ass of all of the big studios movies. And judging from the reviews, it sounds like it actually deserves it this time. Brings a smile to my face.

From what I've seen of Reynolds in trailers, I can only lament the lack of new game shows on TV. He'd have a fine career hosting some of those. Maybe when Sajak retires...? |

Re: The Weekend of Too Many Flops? Box Office Thread 7/17 - 7/21
Damn, that is one solid opening for Conjuring.
I can't believe Paramount is moving PA5 to Jan. 2014 when you consider there's only one more haunting flick coming up (Insidious 2) and Oct. is practically wide open. I don't see that Carrie remake doing much business. Both of Mary Louise Parker's films this weekend combined couldn't match #1. Bummer. Neither looked good, though. And I liked RED, but RED 2 doesn't look like a must-see to me. |

Re: The Weekend of Too Many Flops? Box Office Thread 7/17 - 7/21
I just posted this in the Only God Forgives thread, but it's relevent to this thread too.
I still need to watch the movie (I have it on iTunes unplayed), but as of its third day of release, Only God Forgives is now the third highest grossing film in Radius-TWC's brief history and their highest opening weekend on record. It's also been jumping back and fourth between #1 and #2 in the top iTunes rentals. Thanks for the 78-screen roll-out, assholes. Kirsten Wiig's new flick, Girl Most Likely, gets a 353-screen roll out and gets to play in major chains as it's not available on VOD and yet has half the PSA Refn and Gosling have. |
Re: The Weekend of Too Many Flops? Box Office Thread 7/17 - 7/21
Speaking of which, I have a couple of theatrical options for God Only Forgives and Girl Most Likely. Might see the former tonight.

Vegas only has three theaters not owned by major chains, one which has constantly booked Radius-TWC films, but we got shafted this go-around. :( |

I am not sure how RIPD even got made, least of all got such a large budget. Maybe it read better than it played out? Glad to see such a solid opening for The Conjuring. |

While he does have a very Jason Lee-esque vibe, the question I challenge you with is: what the fuck has Jason Lee done? Outside of Kevin Smith's films, Lee has done more to piss away his career than Reynolds has. It sucks as I really like(d) Lee, but his agent and manager (or scientology) fucked his career.

Re: The Weekend of Too Many Flops? Box Office Thread 7/17 - 7/21
Re OGF, i noticed the Landmark chain doesn't have a deal w Radius for whatever reason. Could an indie that also has On Demand play also get a say 500 screen booking?
