Well, yes and no. Being a 'hit' is a subjective, even relative, term. Is it a commercial success? Most definitely. But, when the third outing in a 'competing' superhero franchise makes almost twice as much at the BO as MoS, it does not go unnoticed by the studio suits.

I wish The To Do List had come out this weekend. I'd probably be watching it right now. But outside of seeing Pacific Rim for a 3rd time there is absolutely nothing I have a desire to see.

Are you new to film or something? Sequels to established hits always do better BO than new series'. Or are you trying to say that Batman Begins was a flop in its time, as well?

IM3 was coming off of The Avengers. It was always guaranteed to do a billion plus, no matter how good or bad it was. Man of Steel was coming off of the floptastic Superman Returns, just as Batman Begins was coming off of Batman and Robin.

Well, don't discount a couple of things: 1) Superman Returns, while critically accepted, has not held up well since its release and 2) Iron Man 3 is coming off of The Avengers, one of the biggest box office hits of all time.

Having said that, based on the reviews (both critics and movie-goers), it could've been better and hopefully they learn from their mistakes with MoS 2.

Ah, here comes Dragon Tattoo in all of his obnoxious glory, hellbent on bashing anything and anyone that might be construed as negativity towards his beloved Zack Snyder jerkfest.

MOS made it's money back even before the film opened, with those licensing fees. They were in the green every step of the way.

Man of Steel is a huge commercial success for WB. If the sequel is a good movie, it will easily top a billion in box office. Iron Man 3 could have been a test signal and generated a billion dollars, audiences are dumb and mindlessly go to big franchises' sequels. It is why Hollywood loves big, dumb franchises.

Most have diminishing returns after the 3rd, we'll see how Iron Man does.

Fast and the Furious being the big exception, though #4 was like a reboot.

I thought the third was the last IM? Isn't RDJ only doing The Avengers films from now on?

I'm sure that if they do try to reboot it without him, the BO won't be nearly as strong.

Yeah, I suspect IM3 is RDJ's last solo Iron Man movie.

You make some good points, but I can't believe that the execs had higher expectations for MoS than what it has delivered. And I completely agree with your last point. I'm happy it was successful, but I hope that the filmmakers learn from this experience and improve the next outing. Unfortunately, with Goyer and Nolan involved, I doubt that will happen.

First they would have to understand what those mistakes were- and that is something I think is beyond them.

I can say I thought the film was cold, humorless and the main character uninspiring and someone else will read that and think what I am asking for is more sitcom style one-liners, overly sentimental displays of maudlin emotion, and the main character to be posed in front of flags and spouting jingoistic BS.

Is this the thread where we're talking Man of Steel now? Can it also be for Star Trek gripes?

My comments were more about the acuity of industry execs than MoS. It was just being used as a frame of reference.

Grown Ups 2 is going to make a hundred million, whoa, RIPD is #6 ouch, could this be the nail in Ryan Reynolds's lackluster career? I mean being good looking only gets you so far.

If I was Ryan Reynolds, I would've fired my agent and manager years ago. The man could be a star, but he chooses nothing but shit to star in.
