3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)

Splendid characters and dialogues and quirky script make this a really enjoyable film. Much in the vein of some of the Coen Bros' best films. A woman rents three disused giant billboards along the town's country road to send a message to the sheriff about his own incompetence in solving the case of her murdered daughter. All hell breaks loose in the small town...

Poor Cow (1967)

First Ken Loach feature film (he had worked previously in television) was a surprise hit worldwide. Story of beautiful and naive Joy (played by wonderful Carol White who had a promising career but sadly drank/drugged herself to an early grave) who tries to make do in London with no money, a small child, and a series of failed relationships to petty thieves who all end up in prison. Carefree in its approach yet touching and humane like most of Loach's films.

The Florida Project...didn't like it. not at all. it was like Larry Clark's KIDS, but much more watered down and PG compared. Just very young kids just doing some mischievous things with little to no parental guidance except for cranky older manager man. Didn't stirke me at all and Dafoe's performances, frankly nothing special. i dunno.

Annihilation (2018) - Good good movie with elements of The Arrival, Stalker and the book, Roadside Picnic. Recommended.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

After hearing all the terrible things about this movie I almost didn't rent it. We saw it Friday night and it had a few laughs. Not a great movie but it was worth the price of a rental for us.

Saw this in the theater. Quite a departure for JC to play a sad guy but it had some good action and suspense.

Matthew McConaughey gained 45 lbs with a diet of cheeseburgers & milk shakes
I've been trying this for years and yet no Hollywood producer ever called me to play in their films! I wouldn't mind shaving the little hair I have left too!

Diva (1983)

This was quite a success in french-speaking countries - both critical and popular - when it came out way back. I had seen it then and wasn't too keen on it. Rewatching it almost 40 years later I did understand things I hadn't then so it did improve the experience. But it's still nowhere like what the "buzz" led me to believe it would be.
A young postman enamored of an opera singer will have his life turned upside down when a dying prostitute puts, unbeknownst to him, an incriminating tape in his work bags.

The Versace Murder (1997)

Soooo bad! I didn't even finish it. Which is very rare for me. The lead actor, who only did this one film, was awful. How can you cast someone like that? After seeing "Delta Force" a while ago, I'm beginning to thing Menahem Golan is the worst director around!!!

Ginger Snaps 2 (2004)

I vaguely remember seeing the first one when it came out. This one was a low-budget but not so bad sequel. The sfx are somewhat lame but the story is watchable.
A young girl/werewolf tries to kick the habit while running away from a male werewolf who wants to mate with her.

Canadian Bacon (1995)

I was always aware this existed but was never curious to watch it since it had John Candy, an actor I abhorre, in it. But when I realized it was written and directed by Michael Moore it piqued my curiosity. There was a few laughs all around but the political dead-pan jokes were the more interesting.

The US president (Alan Alda) starts a cold war with Canada to help with his ratings and to make jobs for the military industry. Things go wrong when a local sheriff from a border town (Candy) takes it seriously and invades Toronto (the capital of Canada!) to save his weapon-crazy friend (Rhea Perlman).

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

i've probably seen this 3, maybe 4 times and watching it again after so long, it is as intense and scary as ever. even though you know what's gonna happen, it still keeps you on the edge. the end scene when Gumb wheres the night vision googles is just so intense. the performances, especially Foster and Hopkins are iconic. i know people say Hopkins overacted or whatever, but he fucking nailed menace and sophistication and madness and brilliance all embodied in this one character. Levine was great as well and wish his career took off a little more from this, but he ain't doing so bad. this is a near flawless movie. and the new Criterion blu looks and sounds fantastic. well deserved 5 Oscar wins.

Mute (2018) on Netflix. Another disappointment from Duncan Jones, although it's visually his most accomplished effort to date. My wife walked in during the scene with Charlie from Lost and the sex robots, which required some explanation.

Early Man (2018) theatrically with the kid. We were the only two in the theater for a Saturday matinee. It wasn't bad, but it's not as clever or as funny as most Aardman films (although I'm sure there were a number of soccer references that went over both of our heads).

Tarzan - Disney Animated version
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Both on Hulu. The first Jack Reacher was superior, but this movie was entertaining enough. It was not good enough to fall in love with but also not bad enough to hate...damming with faint praise but I like the character and would like to see him on the big screen again (and I say this as someone who has never read the books).

Thelma - 2017 - A college girl goes through a sexual awakening. Crazy little movie, very slow burn with some cool bits mixed in. Skip the trailers if you plan on watching it.

2017 was a superior year for "weird" cinema. The Killing of a Sacred Deer, mother!, this and The Square mesh well in their own way.

The Counselor (2013)
Enjoyed the extended edition of this much-disliked Ridley Scott film. Like the flawed characters of a Jim Thompson novel the main characters in this film have virtually no redeeming qualities. However unlike the characters of a Thompson novel whose desperate circumstances evoke some empathy, the characters in this film are already enjoying opulent lifestyles but greed and the allure of easy money results in dire consequences for all but one of the characters when a major drug deal goes awry. A better ending for me would have seen the Diaz character killed in a random attack by an ISIS sympathizer just after completing her big score.

The film won a few dubious awards including the "Hall of Shame" (Scott) and "Actress Most in Need of a New Agent" (Cruz) awards from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists. Diaz's scene with the Ferrari apparently garnered MTV's "Best WTF Moment" award ("Having sex in a car is pretty much a rite of passage, but having sex with a car?")

The Counselor is the first screenplay by author Cormac McMarthy who has had four novels adapted to film: All the Pretty Horses (2000), No Country for Old Men (2007), The Road (2009), and Child of God (2013).

Wait Until Dark (1967)
A recently blinded woman (Audrey Hepburn in an Oscar-nominated performance) is terrorized by a psycho (Alan Arkin) and his two associates who believe she knows the whereabouts of a doll stuffed with heroin. Very 1960s-ish but with some decent suspense once Hepburn's character realizes she's in danger.

As someone who had The Killing of a Sacred Deer & mother! on their top 10 of 2017 list, I will have to check that out

As much as I dislike Ridley Scott, I actually like this film.
I thought the ending was fine, sometimes evil does win.
