Moebius - 4/5

A woman attempts to castrate her husband after finding out that he is unfathful. After failing to complete the task she comes to the conclusion that her teenage son will grow up to be like his father and castrates him. Feeling guilt for what happened and in order to bond with his son, the father has himself medically castrated. And if you think that's bizarre wait till you see what happens next. Another twisted film loaded with symbolism from Korea's best filmmaker.

Junebug came out before Amy Adams blew up.

Superstar

I forgot what happened but it deserved a second viewing on Cinemax though never was a big Shannon fan on SNL.

Big Eyes- A wonderfully refreshing change of pace for Tim Burton, who eschews his usual Gothic quirkiness for a blend of colorful Douglas Sirk-style melodrama and social commentary. Great performances from Waltz and especially a wonderfully sensitive one from Adams, as a damaged but strong victim. A nice reminder that when his game is on, Burton can do more than his usual shtick. Burton's first film shot digitally, the cinematography and set design and period details are really stunning, and what the films says about the commercialization of art, the art world, social mores, and obsession actually has some substance. Excellent.

Son of a Gun: Totally predictable, by the numbers, but massively enjoyable, thanks to a great Ewan McGregor performance and an amazing display of acting by Brendan Thwaites' fuzzstache.

Thor (2011)

Oddly enough, the 2 Thor films are the only MCU films I haven't seen.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Welcome to Me - Movie about a woman winning the lotto, going off her meds, and paying to start a public access-ish talk show. It's like Kristen Wiig playing one of her bi-polar characters from SNL, but as a fully fleshed out, real character. She does a phenomenal job but it is an utterly bizarre "normal" movie. Plus, she does full frontal with bush.

I'm not sure where I stand with the movie, it has some funny stuff, but it's kind of awkwardly taxing.

Perfect Sense - 3.5/5

Two people try to connect amongst the chaos of a global epidemic in which the infected lose their senses one at a time. An apocalyptic love story that focuses more on the love story than the apocalyptic. Would have preferred it the other way around.

The Descent and The Descent Part 2

I must admit that I'm not a big Neil Marshall fan and didn't really care for Dog Soldiers. I tried watching The Descent on DVD shortly after it was released because the reviews were so outstanding. I made it through the first half hour before falling asleep and it's taken me over eight years to get around to trying it again. I nearly fell asleep a second time, but forced myself to push onward. Once the ladies arrive in the cave system, the film achieves an effective sense of claustrophobia (especially when Sarah gets stuck in the passageway). While it has it's fair share of jump scares, I can't help but feel indifferent considering so many critics built it up as the second coming of horror.

The Descent Part 2 wasn't as terrible as I'd heard, but it definitely has a bad case of sequelitis: Let's give the final girl amnesia so we can get her back into the same cave and retread the first movie while pumping up the gore factor. Once I realized the filmmakers had no desire to attempt anything new, I just sat back and enjoyed the throat ripping and eye-gouging. It is a shame that they chose to ignore the superior original ending of the first movie to make this one work.

Lost River - pretentious, art house Gosling film is a cross between Refn and Lynch. Unsettling as fuck and I loved it.

Hitchcock nail biter about a New York ad executive who is mistaken for a spy.

Visually stunning. Somewhat confusing, not sure who "they" are. Didn't like the sound mix; if the volume was high enough for the dialogue, the effects were too loud, turn it down during the rocket sequences and the dialogue too quiet. Ended up using the subtitles.

Vertigo - 5/5

Dreamlike twisted psychological noir about a mentally unstable individual's sexual obsession with a dead woman. Excellent cinematography, acting and music.
One of Hitchcock's deepest films and probably his best. Sigmund Freud would have loved this film.

Junebug is what started Amy Adams trek into big stardom. Was also the first of her 5 oscar nominations (Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, American Hustle).

Same, but didn't have the issues you did. I understood who "they" were
Spoiler:
humans from the future, because Cooper's daughter saved the people on Earth
, and Nolan wanted the sound to be odd in places.

Anyway, I found it to be one of the best movies I've seen recently.

If you dug Only God Forgives, you owe it to yourself to at least give it a shot. The movies aren't similar, but yeah.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Mad Max, for the first time. I get the age/budget thing, but most of the movie was pretty boring to me. The world their in just isn't realized very well to me, and I didn't care for the characters much at all, whether it be the gang like Knightrider (his death was terribly stupid to me), Johnny, and Toecutter, or even the MFP including Max himself. Just seemed very much a movie of it's time and budget, but nothing interesting at all there for me.

Still, hoping to watch Road Warrior before Fury Road.
