Preservation (2014)
Leads are solid and I enjoyed everything up until the final act (which I should have seen foreshadowed). At that point the film seemed to be re-threading a few (specific) Horror films I had seen before.

It Follows - 4/5
One of the better horror films to come out in a while. The use of atmosphere and sense of dread, makes stuff like Oculus with its cheap scare tactics look like garbage.

Before We Go - Chris Evans directorial debut about a woman (Alice Eve) who is rushing home to Boston but winds up robbed and penniless, and the trumpet player (Chris Evans) who helps her. It aims for Before Sunrise but lands more Nick and Norah. Not much depth and a bit silly but honestly, I enjoyed it. It's an escapist fantasy fluff piece but sometimes that's alright. Watched VOD.

Vic and Flo Saw a Bear - 3.5/5
Two female ex-cons who are lovers try to put their pasts behind and start a new life together by settling down in rural Quebec. Their plans soon become disrupted by a nosy parole officer and an overly friendly woman who might not be who she says she is. Good adult drama about the curveballs life can throw at people who are willing to change for the better.

Mission: Impossible III...very entertaining. finished my quadrilogy after seeing RN. really saw the unevenness in the various films except for GP and RN. but, they were decent in their own right. don't think they hold up as well as other franchises, but dammit if i don't like Cruise as an actor.

Starry Eyes - 2.5/5
An actress struggling to make ends meet gets her first big break, an audition for the lead role in a horror film. Facing a lot of competition she will do whatever it takes to get the role, but how far is she willing to go. I liked the Polanski influenced first half and was disappointed by the Cronenberg influenced second half.

Run All Night...watchable, but nothing worked. Terrible script and posturing for posturing sake. Plus, Ed Harris looked old.

Hard to Be a God - 1.5/5
800 years in the future a group of scientists from Earth pay a visit to another planet which is still stuck in the Middle Ages. An overindulgent film that is technically excellent but has very little substance and the 3 hour run time feels more like 6.

Good sci-fi drama with an interesting plot that's kind of a misogynistic variation of the Frankenstein story with excellent performances from Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander.

Playing It Cool on Starz
A good cast (Aubrey Plaza & Philip Baker Hall not mentioned in the poster ) is wasted in this movie and I wonder what compelled them to be in this movie?

Stray Dogs - 3.5/5
The daily existence of a homeless man and his two children as they struggle to get by in Taiwan. What can I say, there are some amazing scenes in this film with some great acting but it's a shame that the great Tsai Ming-liang could not show some restraint in the editing room. This is supposedly his last film and it could have been a masterpiece if it were trimmed by some 30-40 minutes.

Holy Motors - 2.5/5
A man must attend nine appointments in one day which consist of scenarios in which plays a different character while interacting with others. Life imitates art in this sort of surreal film, or is it all an illusion? Liked some of it but then it disappoints by taking a slight turn into silly cutesy territory.

El Infierno (Hell) - 4/5
After living for 20 years illegally in the US a man is deported back to Mexico. With only low paying jobs available, he finds it difficult to make ends meet so he takes a job offer from a friend as an enforcer for the local drug lord. Very good Peckinpah and Tarantino influenced black comedy/crime drama that's a scathing critique on the Mexican drug trade. For those that have not seen it you should check it out on Netflix especially if you like the directors who influenced it.
