Sexy Beast - 3/5

A retired British thief living in Spain is being persuaded by a former colleague (who won't take no for answer) to do one more job. Not a bad film, but not as good as I thought it would be. Worth watching for the acting and especially the chilling performance by Ben Kingsley.

The Keeper - 2/5

A half Haitian corrections officer studying to become an attorney tries to help a Haitian immigrant who he feels was wrongly accused of rape.
Starts out good and goes downhill into melodrama.

Curtains (1983)

The final act of this film is all kinds of awesome.

Last weekend and the one before

Guardians of the Galaxy
Lots of fun.
8/10

Earth for Echo
Derivative but entertaining. The filming gimmick made me motion sick, however!
6.5/10

The Inbetweeners 2
Very broad humour. Not so much plot. I preferred the first film (and the series).
5.5/10

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Down in San Diego for work, but I had time to see Get on Up tonight.

Fantastic movie. Chadwick Boseman was fantastic as JB.

The dancing and soundtrack kicked ass and the 138 minutes flew by. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that no one in this forum is talking about this movie or hasn't seen it. I don't think bio pics have ever been discussed much here. Unless it's science fiction, comic book or horror, no one is going to see or talk about it here.

If any if you are even remotely interested in James Brown, I recommend seeing it. The movie moves really fast.

When the suits in Hollywood get around to their inevitable Lethal Weapon reboot, I'd like to nominate Guy Ritchie as director. His two Sherlock Holmes films are better Lethal Weapon movies than the last two Lethal Weapons.

The Commitments:

Fantastic movie, the soundtrack is great and the cast is mostly by non actors, also I'm a huge fan of Glen Hansard, he was awesome in Once and is awesome in this one as well

Fever Pitch:

I guess everybody knows that awful version with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, but the 90s adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel with Colin Firth as the lead is insanely better.

Gojira- Rialto's new DCP of the iconic Japanese monster classic is not impressive, it must be said; the print used seems to have been ragged. There are some cheesy and dated moments which encountered snickers from the audience, and aspects of the film admittedly haven't aged well, but Honda's documentary background gives some of the black and white photography a bleak beauty, and though the characters are somewhat thinly sketched ("It is of scientific value! It must be studied, not destroyed!"), the film's final emotional scenes are non the less powerful.

Species- An all-star cast and a slimy HR Giger character design elevate this Hollywood Alien meets 90s erotic thriller sci-fi action flick. Sadly, though the film has a few interesting ideas, some decent direction, near effects, and nice cinematography, the film basically feels like a movie for guys too self-conscious to rent softcore with its frequent gratuitous nudity and exploitative premise. Add to this a laundry list of cliches-fake-out slasher deaths, inter-team hookups, a hardass leader, and the dreaded "psychic link," and the film is basically a middle of the road B-movie with some A-grade gloss. Incidentally, I didn't know Henstridge was only 18 or 19 when filming, she looks slightly older.

Darkman- Gonzo, super stylish, hyperkinetic superhero flick long before the genre was fashionable from Sam Raimi at youthful, vigorous, manic best. In spite of some brutality and and an all-over-the-place script which was obviously cobbled together and isn't long on emotional resonance, Raimi's maniacal direction makes the movie lots of fun, with its wild set pieces and over-the-top-design of almost everything. A pair of terrible direct-to-video sequels followed.

Fright Night (remake) - I had extremely low expectations and found it to be surprisingly enjoyable.

The DVD for this came out yesterday and I rented it. Not bad. The cast is decent and it's played up like an old Western.

Attack The Block (2011)

I didn't feel myself cheering on any of the characters, but it was really fun regardless.

Trip With The Teacher (1975)

Zalman King is great/super-sleazy in this but the film was pretty boring overall.

Batman: Under The Red Hood (2010)

Even being previously familiar with the storyline, I thought that the entire film was engaging. As my first DCU animated film, I was very pleased with this one!

Batman: Assault on Arkham
(2014)

The film is entertaining and fun but it's a bit shallow. For a film that is built to showcase B & C-List Villains, the best parts of the film are Harley and the Joker. Conroy is wasted here.

Batman: Year One (2011)

I fully enjoyed the Pulp & Film Noir tone of this film but the voice acting left a lot to be desired. A lot of the internal narrative sounded way too flat which took me out of many scenes.

Son of Batman (2014)

Probably my least favorite of all the DCU animated Batman films I've been watching so far. The plot and voice acting are pretty sub-par. At least the finale was entertaining!
