HBO

From way back in 2014

I liked it and would not mind being in the middle of a Jacobs and Meester sandwich.

Species: The Awakening (Video 2007)

Not terrible. But not great either. It's almost as bad as Species III but a bit more darker in action.

My rating: ★★ out of 5

Shaft (1971) — Richard Roundtree was great and Shaft as a character was absolutely amazing, everything else from the plot which was thin and performances by the supporting cast was a bit iffy. The pacing was also pretty slow and despite only being 100 minutes, felt a bit longer. Still, a good opening into the franchise. ***/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Epix

The 2013 version

It was not horrible but Chloe Moretz was miscast and too pretty to play Carrie and she is not a really good actress either.

Whatever happened to Gabriella Wilde or was she just a flash in the pan?

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

It was a couple of re-writes from being a good movie.

Behind the Green Lights (1946). Another B-movie. A corpse is dumped at the police station, and the case quickly becomes political.

A supporting character is a political boss who owns a newspaper. He describes how he's going to win the election by ruining the reputation of an innocent person -- making her front page news every day, and putting her in the fashion section, and in the gossip section, and writing editorials. It was disturbingly similar to how the news is used today. (Tubi)

I knew it got horrible reviews and it bombed and it sure did live up to that hype.

Probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen along with Super Mario Bros and Toys the Robin Williams movie.

No hot girls either to make it go faster and the acting was shitty.

At least Dev Patel redeemed himself later in his career with better movies and M Night somehow found a way to get his groove back.

Found this quote from 2018:

But despite Richard Dreyfuss' success, the 70-year-old Academy Award-winning actor has confessed he can't afford to retire.

He told The Daily Telegraph on Friday that he attempted to quit showbusiness 14 years ago but realised it wasn't financially viable.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbi...cial-woes.html

So apparently he still has to do these movies to put in the bank...

That sucks

Maybe he get a supporting role on a high quality streaming show instead of doing movies like Crime Story.

Guess he did not save or make good investments if he has to still work.

He's 70 and has $5M. I wonder what his expenses are if $5M is a serious lack of funds.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Ambulance (2022) — I generally like Michael Bay movies, even when they go into stupid, inane territory. However, his latest, Ambulance is a 90-100 minute movie that is stretched to over two hours and got tedious pretty quickly, most notably the aerial/drone shots that did make me a tad nauseous. The writing also was pretty poor including the cringe "comedic" lines that didn't work, not to mention a few unnecessary scenes for the supporting characters. I guess on the plus side Jake Gyllenhaal can play psychotic pretty well and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has his moments. I also liked how Bay/composer Lorne Balfe recycled one of the themes from 13 Hours at the end.

As a whole, this is not one I'll revisit. */***** (4K Ultra HD)

Wow, "only" 5 mil net worth! Perhaps he's house-rich and cash-poor, in which case he should downgrade to cheaper real estate.

I think this one is pretty overrated as a film. It's probably the plot which drags along for me that is the biggest weakness. The second film Shaft's Big Score is far better and a bit more grittier.

Re-watched:

It still holds up even after multiple views for me. I mean I know what's coming (plot wise) but I still get sucked into the storyline and dramas that are within the film. Also there's a black comedy aspect to this stuff that's pretty hilarious, especially from the Kitano character.

I already owned Shaft's Big Score but never got around to watching it. Luckily I won't have to dig around to find it as the Criterion release also includes that one.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Jurassic Park Dominion. I actually enjoyed this film and am glad I saw it in theaters, so no regrets.

That being said, as someone noted in the film’s review thread, it would have been nice if there was more of a focus on the consequences of Dino’s now being something we all have to adjust to living with. I wanted more of this, and we only saw a bit off this with the construction site workers having to guide the Dino’s through their worksite so they could get back to work, and that all too brief montage at the end of Dino’s learning to co-exist with modern animals.

The locust thing did not bother me, and of course I thought of Monsanto and how they ticked off a lot of farmers who felt they had to use Monsantos genetically engineered seeds or deal with the potential of Monsanto suing them. A bit confused why Tim Cook needed to be the villain, but whatever, lol.

Amazon Prime

It was better than the other movies I saw this week which is not saying a lot

Several scenes with some naked hot chics and Sydney Sweeney from Euphoria shows her ballons though I did not like that British douche nailing all those chicks.

If you are missing the days of the erotic thriller and Hollyood did not become soft and remove all nudity from their films maybe put this on at 2am.

Maybe we will be seeing Sweeney in more movies and she gives off this Amanda Seyfried vibe.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Red Heat (1988) - I believe I saw this back when it first came out, but haven't watched it since and didn't really remember anything about it. It's not a good movie. It's a pretty by-the-numbers 80s buddy-cop thriller, but without any kind of style or flair to make it entertaining or distinctive. Arnold's character is just written as a stoic Russian monolith, not giving any chance for Arnold's charisma to come through. He had hits with Predator and The Running Man the year before, so this is prime-time Arnold in a very disappointing movie. Jim Belushi is basically his usual self, not really anything interesting in his character either. It was mildly fun seeing a fairly solid supporting cast including Laurence Fishburne, Peter Boyle, and Gina Gershon, plus several "that guy" actors like Pruitt Taylor Vince and Brion James. Too bad they weren't all in a better movie.
