My dad passed in 2017 from complications from this exact thing, and he had no idea who I was the last few times I saw him.

Re: The One and Only Bruce Willis Thread

Die Hard is returning to theaters on December 8th. Since Disney owns the Fox Catalog and rarely does Repertoire screenings I thought it would be worth mentioning here.

Re: The One and Only Bruce Willis Thread

I never saw Die Hard in the theater. In Summer of 1988 I moved back to the States from living a year overseas. Maybe I'll go if A-List pays for it.

Re: The One and Only Bruce Willis Thread

I have seen it a few times in theaters. Once at the Alamo Drafthouse and the other at one of our smaller independent theaters in town. I might try and go as I'd like to keep supporting these type of retro screenings of Fox movies when they happen. I hope to go to The Abyss on the 6th as I've never seen it.

It's always odd to hear this about a movie I've watched so many times. I was living in the L.A. area so several theaters always had it in 70mm. If you do see it, try to catch Under Pressure doc about the making of.

Re: The One and Only Bruce Willis Thread

The Abyss is a movie I always wanted to see but never got around to it. It doesn't help it hasn't been available to watch since the early days of dvd. I also didn't want to watch it on a non anamorphic dvd. The Cinemark theater which is fairly close to me is showing it on their Extreme screen and the ticket price is around $11. I can't bring myself to pay more than $20 for a ticket to the Dolby Cinema showing at AMC. If I like it I'll definitely be getting the 4k release that will be out next March and I know that documentary will be on the release.

Got my Die Hard ticket for Dolby Cinema. Even though I’ve seen this movie many times and own the BD and 4K digital copy, I want to see it theatrically as a way to pay my respects to Willis. And A-List does cover it.

You guys are lucky. I know I saw all the sequels theatrically, but I can't recall if my parents took 7-year-old me to see the original on the big screen.

Re: The One and Only Bruce Willis Thread

It's coming back for at least a week btw. Not just a one-time thing. Gonna be seeing The Abyss and Die Hard in a week. I'd love to see the first three on the big screen.

Which is it? Is Die Hard so great because of the age I was when I saw them for the first time? Or does the genre just suck now? It was really just 5-7 filmmakers at the forefront of the best action films, in a 10-or-so year period.

It's kind of like 90's grunge and alternative music. I'm still listening to it today. And I'm not sure there's anything better.

The genre just sucks now. 80/90's action movies were peak. CGI and bloated budgets have gutted the quality.

It's just that good. And the genre mostly sucks now. Most don't know how to shoot action anymore.

Re: The One and Only Bruce Willis Thread

I caught the re-release of Die Hard last night at AMC in Dolby Cinema. What a great and classic action movie and it was good to see it for the 1st time on the big screen. I wish I could have seen it for the 1st time in summer of 1988 at 15 years old. But, you know I was living overseas at the time and in the process of moving back to the States. Glad re-releases are a thing now.

I had forgotten what a really funny movie this was in parts, McClane cracked me up and Rickman was so good as Hans. And McClane and Powell's friendship that developed throughout the movie was such a strong point.

Bonnie Bedelia is still a beautiful woman now, but she was gorgeous back in 1987 when this was filmed at 39. And she was 7 years older than Willis.

Well, glad I saw it. They certainly don't make action movies like these anymore.

In the 90s, they exhausted every possible setting for a "Die Hard in/at a _________" version.

I hope to go see Die Hard on Tuesday as that's my closest theater's discount ticket night.

I've always been so torn on Die Hard 2. On one hand, it's a pretty effective action film in its own right, and well made. On the other, the coincidences involved are so preposterous, and John McClane commenting on them doesn't make it any more plausable.

Agreed. As a stand-alone action movie it’s just fine but it definitely fits in that early-90s mold of “let’s just repeat the same story beats from the first movie again for the sequel”.

McClane commenting on the coincidences feels like they were added in just so they could use them in the movie’s trailers.

Hot take: Die Hard 2 > Die Hard with a Vengeance

Hey, does anyone else remember Die Hard Trilogy on the PS1? I really enjoyed it back in the day but it sure looks like ass today.

Good game!! I liked the first two parts of the game but the Vengance part was just a bad driving game.

That's my biggest problem with it. I've decided it plays better if I watch Die Hard, followed by With a Vengeance, then Die Hard 2. I can then better accept all these coincidences occurred after a few more years separated the two Christmas Eve events. Plus, I think #3 ignores the events of #2 and pretends like it never happened. So it also makes more sense from a chronological standpoint.

I absolutely LOVE Die Hard 2.

It's unbelievably fun and entertaining. Hell, in some respects it's even more fun than Die Hard. Die Hard is better written by a small margin, but Die Hard 2 is arguably more fun.

Six of one, half dozen of the other. The fact that it's a rehash of the first movie just in a different setting doesn't bother me in the least. It's too much fun to nit pick.

.
100% agree

The idea behind Die Hard was that he was an ordinary cop caught up in a once of a lifetime situation. If they were going to have him get caught up in another one, they might as well lean into how preposterous it is and make it crazy fun.

I saw Die Hard 2 in a completely packed theater here in Austin, and they had the sound turned up to 11. The movie was so loud and the crowd was really into it. Great movie going experience!!
