Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015, D: Unknown, S: Unknown)

This quote was taken from an interview with "Saftey Not Guaranteed" director Colin Trevorrow (apparently from a few months ago). Considering his name has come up as a candidate and it's been reported he'd previously met with Lucas, it's easy to beleive from this comment that he could very well have the job already.

As far as professional life, I can’t speak with any specificity as to what the next thing will be. There are amazing opportunities that have arisen as a result of this. One of them, I will say, will probably create a great deal of ire against me on the Internet when people find out what it is. So, I just want to say in advance that I promise you, for all of those who love the mythology that I will be tackling, trust that I love it as much as you do. And I will respect it, and hopefully make it not suck.”
This video was linked in the original article. I assume it's where the above quote is from, but I can't view it to verify at the moment.

Okay, nevermind. He's denied the rumor on Twitter:

@colintrevorrow Are you officially saying that you are out of the running?

@maerj2000 That is what I am saying.
It seems Matthew Vaughn is about the only director the press has zeroed in on who hasn't denied their involvement yet -- apart from Mark Millar saying Vaughn left the X-Men: First Class sequel to work on their Secret Service adaptation.

Makes me wonder what Colin Trevorrow is working on. What is this beloved mythology he is working on?

In the tweet he says "film," so that suggests that it's a sequel/remake of a single movie, not a film series.

For the record, he's not doing the remake of Howard the Duck:

Whew, I was scared it was Colin and that he'd get Chloe from 24.

With Safety Not Guaranteed's time travel element, I wonder if it could be Back to the Future. That would certainly draw a lot of ire, especially if it's a remake (rather than another sequel) and the parts have to be re-cast.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015, D: Unknown, S: Unknown)

Entertainment Weekly (print edition) has an article on all this, although I suspect that the line about Brad Bird, Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams being on the short list of directors being sought, with Bird "the only realistic candidate of the three," is already outdated.

Also, about where the $4.05 Billion earmarked for Lucas is going, it says, "the money's most likely destination is the George Lucas Educational Foundation." Not sure what kind of "charity" that is. Sounds like it's going from one pocket into another.

Of the directors quoted on their reactions to the news of a new Star Wars movie being made, Tarantino offers a breath of fresh air with the only dissenting opinion:

I could so care less. Especially if Disney's going to do it. I'm not interested in the Simon West version of Star Wars.
(Well, unless it had the cast of West's last film--EXPENDABLES 2--in it. Then even I could care.)

It's a charitable foundation that has his name, because he founded it. It's like the Rockefeller Foundation, the Nobel Foundation, or The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Once the money has been donated to the foundation, it's not Lucas's money anymore, although as the Foundation's Chairman, he likely has some say in how the money is disseminated.

Listeners to NPR will have already heard "Funding for this program was made possible by the George Lucas Educational Foundation, creators of Edutopia....etc"

Expect to hear alot more of that for the rest of your lives.

Updates (on multiple sites) seem to confirm involvement and possible producer roles....sounds great to me!

Kasdan!!!!

I'm almost starting to feel bad for Lucas; these new films are going to kick ten kinds of butt and he's going to have to deal with all these other people "saving" the franchise.

Eh, still cautiously optimistic. Sucks to hear Vaughn isn't doing First Class 2.
