Star Wars fans will are now going to feel the pain of discerning Trekkies who endured the dumbing down of their franchise. You think Episodes I-III were retarded? You ain't seen nothin' yet. Lens flares are the tip of the iceberg. Mickey Mouse-hands. The Willy Wonka-slide. Michael Bay-vibe from the first to last frame. And any complaint will be meant with pop culture ridicule. Sorry, guys.

And considering that the prequels were somehow WORSE than those awful Next Gen movies, I really don't see where you get the idea that things were somehow good before for either franchise. Besides your own blind and irrational hatred of the best thing that's happened to Trek since 1999.

Just last month:
And the month before that...
I'd like to know what he has to say now, probably something like: Well, they offered me lots of money and I just said OK after thinking it over.
Speaking to Empire magazine, Abrams said he will be sticking to the "Star Trek" franchise. "I guess the franchises could go up against each other, but I'm not thinking that far ahead! I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, and the idea of the world continuing is exciting and will be amazing. Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It's in great hands."
He added that "there were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

Back in November, Abrams commented on the possibility of him directing and it sounded like it wasn't happening:
"Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!"

I loved Next Generation and DS9. I have a phaser and a Riker action figure from "All Good Things" still in the package downstairs. I've been to a Star Trek convention. I once chased Walter Koenig across an interstate to get a picture with him in a K-Mart parking lot. My wife gave me a pocket watch with "Imzadi" engraved inside it. And I loved the living shit out of the new Trek movie. Am I one of the "masses"?

[QUOTE=KillerCannibal;11552973]My biggest concern here is that Abrams will bring in his team of single-minded FX artists to create new creatures in this universe that look like everything does in his universe.[QUOTE]
Or they could create creatures that look nothing like anything that already exists in the Star Wars universe ... oh, wait ... yeah, Lucas did that already.

That stuff was TAME compared to the nonsense in almost all of the other Trek films.

Behold the template J.J. will use for Star Wars. (First tested on Trek):

"B-b-but, it's popular with the public, therefore it's good!!!"

I think it's great because I've watched a shitload of Star Trek in my life and it's the best thing to come out of the franchise in years. What's better? Nemesis? Insurrection? Enterprise? You've got to be joking.
The fact that people rewarded it with an excellent box office is just icing on the cake. I'd love it even if I was the only one. but sometimes we all get lucky and great movies make great money. I'm sure the next one will be even better.
And guess what...you don't have to see any of this stuff. So what's your problem?

I'm just bummed out that the Star Trek reboot means we'll never get a Deep Space Nine movie.

I was worried that Star Trek was going to be a terrible CW Version of the show but it wound up being tremendously entertaining even if the CW part isn't completely false.
I've enjoyed 2 of the 6 Star Wars movies (I always found Return of the Jedi idiotic, and the prequels all put me to sleep), but I'll give this benefit of the doubt.

As weird as sounds Trek means something to me. It's been a life preserver in some really hard times of my life. It saddens me that it will be substance-free garbage from henceforth.
[And yes, Enterprise sucks. No argument. But, it's Schopenhauer by way of Asimov compared to what Abrams squeezed out. The TNG were all flawed films, but at least they were honest attempts at being Star Trek with varying results rather than being deliberate pablum.]

I really feel there will be a clash between his idea of the "Mystery Box" and their idea of selling the Star Wars name to anyone who asks!

At least you don't have to worry about him dumbing down Star Wars bc it can't be done.

I doubt that the higher-ups are going to allow any director to drastically change the "look" of a Star Wars "episode" movie. Like I said earlier, off shoots, etc, then sure, let the director express more of themselves in terms style, but they'll keep the "episode" movies fairly consistent in regards to overall appearance I'm sure.
