Re: Dredd 3D (Travis, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
Just got back from seeing it.
That was a lot of fucking fun. It's my favorite film of the year now. Beats the shit out of The Expendables (of which, aside from the badass intro, was very meh worthy)...if you want to go the action movie genre route. And in comparison to The Raid...building inside...is pretty much The Raid building w/ some stuff added. This film? Kicks it's ass as well.
Karl Urban. Yes. Finally someone used you so goddamn well. I've always liked him but had never seen a good film w/ him as the lead, he's alright...it's just...well...those movies weren't all that good. Casting...perfect. They all just fit so well into their roles. They felt lived in. Of which is great to also feel about the tone of the film. This is really a day in the life of Judge Dredd. You feel that he's got some serious experience in the way he says things or through body language feels about it. I've never read a Dredd comic, I've always wanted to for years cuz he sounds amazing. But from what I've read and know about the guy from everything off of Wikipedia or whatever..this is fucking Dredd. Thirby was very good as the rookie. Like Dredd..you can feel what they know through the performance. She presented the rookie well and not generically as most rookies are seen in movies. In comparison...how is the movie Anderson and comic Anderson alike or different?
This movie was awesome. Action was A+. Story was something we've seen a few times. Good guys got in some shit on baddies turf...will now go after the big boss. Difference? It was done very goddamn well. It's VERY MUCH a genre piece in a way. The music was great. Set design? For what it had and what it had to tell? Fucking great. Really sold the size of Mega city 1.
This film kind of proved for me how 3D should and shouldn't work. Or how it can't work...YET. For the most part. 3D was solid. If shit was flying fast...it could get a bit jittery. I'm assuming 48fps can solve that? 3D wise aside from some shit in a wide shot getting a bit on the jittery side, in the sense that 3D probably wasn't meant to work like that, I'd probably give a B+ on the 3D. Great depth and feel to it. Slo Mo was great for it.
Direction wise? VERY VERY VERY well controlled and. I really liked how sometimes the look of a shot was dirty or just not too clean. Like...in the digital sense...not sure if that makes sense. You just saw things that were inherently dirty in the digitalness of it. I liked that.
Editing? Fucking perfect. Paced so goddamn well. Wasn't bored for a moment at all. I know they cut stuff out based off what Urban and Garland have said...and they're probably right in doing so. Urban would say something akin to maybe Dredd is talking too much here or there. Garland supposedly had some form of control...that we can't officially prove..but I dunno. The director hasn't talked a lot from what I've noticed..so I dunno. Supposedly there's a weird agreement that this is essentially a producer's movie...and if that's true. Than I'm ok w/ some producer's being fucking smart artistically and financially.
I'd love to see the script again...to see what worked so well on the page in comparison to what would or wouldn't work in post production.
Watch it in 3D. It's badass and won't waste your 96 minutes. It takes your money and thanks you for it by the end of the film.
EDIT: Like someone said..for the love of fucking christ..go see this movie cuz we need team of filmmakers like this to make more solid material. ESPECIALLY if it's Dredd.

I predicted this would bomb like the original did. It's not really a character anyone aside from fanboys are excited about then you throw in a relatively unknown character actor (yes I know he was in Star Trek and LOTR) but show his picture the the average American and they would have no idea who he is. So lets see how these remakes of Robocop and The Rocketeer go now.

I'm going to see it at 7, but I'm not surprised about the bomb.
There's like 3 showings a day currently, and it's opening week.

I'll probably end up buying the Blu-ray just to support the film's backend as opposed to seeking a screener from somewhere.

Hell, I almost passed on it because it seemed like a Raid knockoff with Judge Dredd pasted over it. Very glad I didn't skip out on it.

Again. PLEASE. You've no idea how much a film needs some love like this one. It's got so much going for it.
My theater for the 11:35 showing was about 60-70% full.

Just got back from a 4:10 and there was only 10 people
Which is unfortunate, because its one of the best films I've seen this year. I can see it doing well on video, but maybe this weekend was just too crowded.
But I loved it. No saving the world, no origin story, no romance, just Dredd doing the fucking job.

My showing at 5:25 (in a little while) has only 2 people so far (I can see the seating chart) - me and someone else.
My personal social group of people have already seen it or will be seeing it tomorrow, so I've done all I can for now.

Yeah, for sure. Word of mouth, guys. This thing needs some love. I've told all my friends to see it. I know a shit ton of the guys at work wanted to see it. Telling them to see it in 3D, they were probably going to either way..but still....needs some love.
Undoubtedly this is my favorite film of the year. It's going to be hard to knock this film down from that spot. I loved TDKR, The Avengers, and The Raid. Those were beaten to crap by Dredd. I was smiling the whole way through this film.
Looper and UniSol have a shit ton to impress me w/ now. Dredd is my fav of the year. Ain't no way The Master, Lincoln, or whatever else comes out during Award Season will have a chance to be my favs if Dredd is that much fucking fun for me. I'm so glad I saw it.
The part where I kind of knew I was going to like it a lot..was pretty much when I saw the Title in 3D w/ the music going. Really packed a punch and made a damn statement.

I never expected this movie to do well. Nobody really knows about this property aside from the Stallone stinker, and the average J6P probably thinks this is a sequel with a lesser known actor. If we all buy some BRs and such, we might be able to convince them to do a sequel, but not likely. Bottomline, people don't know good action anymore.

Straightforward, unpretentious, ultraviolent, and lots of fun.
The "mutant" aspect suprised me. And I'm suprised that nothing convoluted happened with it in the end. I thought there was going to be some trick with the mutant stuff and the "slo mo" drug effects. I was quite sure of myself while watching.
I also appreciated that there wasn't any sort of attempt at a large story arc - the way the 1995 movie did. It was a very fresh take.
There were plenty of good situational and character moments scattered throughout. You put ten or fifteen of those moments in a ninety minute movie - and it turns into a really fucking good movie.
The movie is gorgous, but not as unrelentlessly visceral as a Michael Bay movie. It's more focused on looking really eloquent - as opposed to having individual shoehorned payoffs all over the place (like a Bay movie).

When the trailers for "300" came out, I had no interest in seeing it, then did due to how great everyone said it was, and loved it. I had the same story with "Dredd". Frakking awesome. I hope it somehow finds an audience and we get more.

2/3rd's full. Great reaction by the crowd. Man, I forgot how loud it is especially when the logo hits the screen. Hell, when the Reliance and DNA logos hit - those are loud too!
In this instance, the 3D is worth it in that the slo-mo scenes are way more visceral, but 2D is fine, as well.
