I just saw a preview for this. I can't decide if this is the worst or best (so bad it's good) tagline:
"If you're not on the edge of your seat, you aren't sitting down."

The score and soundtrack were also pretty dope. It was a nice trance/rock/synth infused score.

Yeah, parts of the soundtrack reminded me of a John Carpenter piece, like Escape from New York. Seemed likely to have been intentional. Liked it more than I expected, great pacing, a decent plot.

Just got back from a 2D showing.
The first thing that jumped out at me was that this is really meant to be seen in 3D. I know I know, the title is Dredd 3D. I'm not big on 3D but this probably would have been worth seeing in the format. There were quite a few scenes that were obviously meant to be seen only in 3D and kind of looked shitty otherwise.
But on to the movie. It's awesome. Definitely the best action film I've seen this year, and that includes "The Raid". Coincidentally enough the plot is virtually the same. No need to get into that though.
Dredd is a badass. I was impressed that Urban was able to keep the signature scowl the entire film. Doesn't flinch once. He did an great job.
The actress who played Anderson must be a newbie because I've never seen or heard of her. Goddamn she's cute. Totally my kinda girl in the looks department. I'll be keeping an eye out for her future projects. She did a good job in the role.
Finally the actress playing the lead villain was fantastic. She was a hardcore bitch, loved it.
The action was graphic and gory, just like I like it. Alittle bit of an overkill on the CGI, but I'll live.
It was a fun, entertaining, fast paced film that is a BD buy for sure. Someone you can throw in when your buddies are over and have a blast watching together. Definitely down for any sequels.
Grade: A-

Lean, mean and very enjoyable flick. I liked the action alot and the SLO-Mo really worked. Good action, nice gore...nuf said.
I did think the 3D was totally worthless except the SLO-mo shots. Didn't do anything for me at least.
Can't wait to compare this to the shit fest of Stallone's as I have it set to record this weekend.
Overall, can't go wrong for 90 minutes!

Stallone's is a guilty pleasure in that the special effects, make-up effects, and production design are all top notch. Dredd 2012 mops the floor with it.

Saw it. Overall I really liked it for the hard-core action flick it proved. Blows the Stallone version out of the water, that's for certain. What I liked best was that this one didn't try to be all fancy schmancy about anything. It was violent and gritty, the way a Dredd movie should be when made, and most importantly, no Rob Schneider! The more I think of this one , the more I realize just how much of a travesty they 1995 version was in comparison.
3D works in the sequences for which it was obviously intended. I also liked how they didn't do any major origin story for the character but instead opted for somewhat a "day in the life of" approach. I hope they do that with more comic book features. Only drawback was that I have seen The Raid:Redemption and this was very similar. Both are good, but Raid was the better action flick IMO, mostly because of all the martial arts stuff. Still, this movie was worth the late-night showing, so a thumbs up from me.

Saw it in 3D since my theater has like one 2D showing vs five 3D ones. Loved the movie: been a fan of Judge Dredd for like 2-1/2 decades (importing thre newspaper progs back in the day) and really enjoyed seeing it all come to life in this way.
I doubt I caught much of the fan items within the movie, but I got a chuckle seeing the "Chopper" tag inside the block, as well as a quick glimpse of a "Fatty". Anyone catch others?

Alex Garland said that if they greenlight a sequel that he would guide it into a television series. If it were on a premium channel or FX or something, then that would be epic!

I'm so in love with the flick and finished product that I'm probably going to track down all of the Omnibus collected volumes of the Dredd comic books.

Yes, the "day in the life" story angle is what makes it work. It opens it up to so many possibilities should they continue to make more Dredd flicks/series.

Loved it. It's a lean, mean grime machine. Reminded me of early John Carpenter films like Assault on Precinct 13 and Escape from New York. Even the music emulates Carpenter at times. It's heavy on the violence, in that Peckinpah slo-mo style. Very brutal at times. I hope it does well because this film acts as a precursor of great things to come and I'd certainly be up for more.

I think the high reviews upped my expectations too high; it was decent, some good action and I really liked the Anderson character and seeing how she performed. But I didn't think it was particularly awesome as someone that doesn't know much about the comics. It didn't help that the Raid was somewhat of a similar situation and was far, far better.
Worth a watch and very entertaining, but nothing special for me.

The Raid was better? That just deflated my interest

Well, Dredd doesn't pull out the cool martial arts moves, because Dredd ISN'T a martial artist, so please don't go in there thinking it's going to turn into a martial arts epic. Wrong film.

I really like "The Raid" and I also really like "Dredd", but they are VERY tonally different in the execution: I personally like each for different reasons and would consider them two separate animals.
If I REALLY had to compare the two:
- Dredd has better acting; less overwrought character interactions
- The Raid has the most (and best) hand to hand action sequences
- Both settings are different, but it's interesting to see a Indonesian slum and a Post Apocalytic slum :P
- The fighting in both is exhilarating, although the Raid can get numbing after awhile.
Again, I love both movies but they really aren't the same.

Saw it in 3D. Loved it. Urban is the perfect Dredd, and I'm so happy he never took the helmet off. Megacity 1 also looked excellent, basically like Detroit with some added highrise towers. Didn't try to be a Blade Runner rip-off in the design department.
I do recommend the comics to anyone who liked this film, but if you're going to use the Complete Case Files collections, do realize that it takes some time to develop the more mature style that this kind of movie is based on. The early stuff can be off putting to new readers, but it's worth sticking with it (and the early stuff is enjoyable on its own terms, you just have to be prepared for it).

I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. Took the household tonight and we all enjoyed it greatly. My lady thought the slow-mo was tiresome after awhile, but she admitted that at least they explain why it's happening instead of just doing slow-mo for the heck of it. Our 9-yr old now wants to know more about Judge Dredd and British comic books!

Loved it as well. Karl Urban rocked. His voice was perfect and I loved the way he said "Ma-Ma". Great action..fast paced..solid all around. Judge Anderson is an effin cutie. Definite buy from me.

Just read somewhere that Dredd is on course to make just under 6 million for the weekend. Fuck.
