Re: Dredd 3D (Travis, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
I have to agree. I watched it this morning and wasn't too terribly impressed. I went in with very low expectations. Honestly the only reason I watched it was because so many here seemed to like it so much.
I was expecting a thin plot, cool action and a ton of violence. Unfortunately it only delivered on the thin plot. It was way too stylized. I was hoping for more of a straightforward action flick. Too much slow-mo and filtering.

I liked it, but completely agree with your last point. I wish it was just toned down a bit.

The slo mo was only ever used when someone was doing the fucking SLO MO drug. It wasn't slow motion just for the sake of slow motion. I guess that really went over peoples (the haters) heads.

How is it exactly I'm labeled a hater for simply not liking the movie as much as some here?

Disliking is fine. The reason for disliking is what I was commenting on. There's a reason behind the slo-mo. I was clarifying it - it's a big plot point.

I personally liked how the slo-mo looked but can understand if others didn't like how colourful and stylized those sequences got. However, what's with saying there were too many slo-mo sequences? Weren't there like four?
Those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.
I think the only non-drug related slow motion sequence was when

You're right. Thanks.
So there are six slow motion sequences and five of them are directly related to the use of the drug, slo-mo. Doesn't seem like a lot of slow motion sequences to me. I'd hate to be those complaining if they were ever subjected to movies directed by Zack Snyder, Michael Bay, Paul WS Anderson, or even John Woo.

Paul WS Anderson movies are good?
I was thinking that this movie could've used a bigger budget. All the pieces were in place, they had the right direction, they just needed more money.

I don't think so. I think there "small" budget was used much more effectively than the norm. That's creative as fuck filmmaking. I don't see how a bigger budget could've helped aside from getting some better cgi. CGI wise...I think it was pretty solid aside from the neck effect. But that kind of attack would look weird even in practical so maybe it's just that we're not accustomed to that kind of attack.

The movie needed better and more action sequences that involved Dredd killing people in creative ways. I thought the "running away from the gun" was ultimately lame and there could've been at least two more set pieces at around 3-5 minutes each.

And that would have required a bigger budget. I'm not understanding the "he had to kill people in creative ways" argument.
He kills people at will - "creativity" in killing doesn't figure into the equation. Maybe irony, but creativity?
He's human, not a super powered being, so I doubt he could absorb the bullets from 3 giant gatling guns if he didn't run away.

You know, as I watched Zero Dark Thirty I thought it would have been way better if they had killed Bin Laden more creatively.

And Dredd did actually kill people creatively. That guy's neck, guy thrown off that floor (which is actually more fascinating for the tone that was given), that first guy w/ the girl in that building, etc. Dredd was pretty creative in his kills.

True. Hell, his fucking gun is pretty creative. Any perp that gets taken out by a unique ammo selection is being dispatched in a creative fashion.

Let's not forget napalm (was it called that?).
Goddamn do I want a sequel for this. Man, If I won the lottery I'd fucking give it to these guys cuz I'd love to see wtf happens next w/ Dredd. Ugh. Garland teased what could be given to us and it sounded very nice.

I would have loved to have seen the two-way split round, but he ran out of ammo.

That was w/ the guy that held that girl hostage.
That's the one I thought was Napalm.
I know. He kept calling them out and I was hoping he had one extra one just to see wtf that gun could do.
