UPDATE!! Pete Travis (Kinda/Sorta) Talks About A DREDD Sequel...A Little...
Not really, but neat nonetheless. As someone mentioned in the comments - (totally random) if Judge Death were to be in a sequel he should be played by Doug Jones.
Merrick again...
THIS piece over at Collider reveals that DREDD is performaing quite well in tis home video rounds, via a nifty press releae from Lionsgate...
The verdict is in and Lionsgate (LGF), a leading global entertainment company, announced today that the home entertainment release of DREDD claimed the number one spot on the DVD sell-through and Blu-ray charts with 650,000 units sold, making it the best-selling new release title of the year. Blu-ray units accounted for nearly 50% of week 1 POS at retail. In addition, the critically acclaimed thriller, starring Karl Urban (Star Trek) as the titular character Judge Dredd , was the top film download for the week, outpacing all other titles in digital sales as well.
If this trend continues, perhaps it'll be interpreted as showing potential/being promising for future installments? Given this information, let's hope at least an openness to the notion is present amongst The Powers That Be. It may be too early to tell, but fingers crossed...
=============================
I loved 2012's DREDD in call kindsa ways. I adored it's unapologetic brutality. I loved how brilliantly it rendered hard ugliness in such beautiful ways. And, when all is said and done, the film may well represent the best use of 3D photography ever put on screen.
Aaaaaaaannnnnnddddddddd.....
It pretty much tanked at the box office. I think this happened for a number of reasons. Primarily, I don't feel the film was sold fully or accurately (the promos failed to capture/convey the energy of the movie). Meaning, potential audiences couldn't fully grasp what might make DREDD work - and cursory teasing did not suit this picture well at all. I've encountered a huge number of people who perceived DREDD to be little more than a "MAD MAX ripoff"...and it's very, very far from that.
All things being equal, a DREDD sequel...hinted at by its makers before the release of the first movie...now seems unlikely. Money matters don't seem to support the notion in many ways at all. However, per THIS piece over at movies.com, DREDD director Pete Travis...who knocked it out of the park so completely with his first forray into Mega-City One...hints that hope may not be entirely lost. This isn't the most positive sense of a DREDD sequel one could hope to find...but it also sounds like the matter isn't entirely closed for discussion at this point.
Travis: Who knows what will happen in the future. I just loved making this one. I hope it's successful enough. I know Alex has lots of other stories he wants to tell, and I think Karl is just the epitome of Dredd. I really hope there's an opportunity to tell some more stories together and take him on another journey.
DREDD looks rather amazing on Blu-ray...it's 3D works incredibly well on home screens, but the set also includes a non 3D version of the project. If you haven't seen it yet, consider giving it a look. Or, if you have seen it and would like to see more of the Urban/Travis/Garland Dreddverse...perhaps Blu-ray sales might make a difference in the grand scheme of things?
Personally, I'd love to see where this team would take future DREDD pictures. And my (admittedly foolish and unlikely) hope is that this might...in some way, some day...happen if DREDD is discovered on home video. As Jack Burton might say..."You never can tell..."

Keep buying and renting!!
Dredd DVD and Blu-ray Top Sales Charts
Fans of Peter Travis’s brilliant Dredd 3D, the second attempt in ten years to make a feature film adaptation of the popular 2000 AD antihero Judge Dredd and the second to be considered a box office failure, have been aggressively pushing to make the film a success on home video in the (probably vain) hope that doing so will motivate Lionsgate to make a sequel.

Then again, if a sequel were to be made in the future, they would not use the same props from this film. They'd start over or update what they already have. I'm sure the original molds are still being kept.

so apparently there is talk of making Dredd gay in the comic books. and of course, it didn't take long for this to show up on the web

I hope that's a baseless rumour. Dredd should remain asexual. I don't want to know a signle thing about his love life or sexual orientation.

This can't be a good sign in regards to a sequel. The film's props and costumes are being auctioned off.

They break up the Star Trek set all the time. Its cheaper to rebuild and make better then to store.

Rob Williams discusses "Judge Dredd: Closet," his upcoming"2000 AD" tale that takes a satirical look at serious issues facing teens today by sending future cop Dredd into the gay club life of Mega-City One.
Judge Dredd has gotten himself out a lot of tight spots over the years, but on January 30, the hard-chinned future cop finds himself stuck somewhere he's never been before: the closet. In Rob Williams' "Judge Dredd: Closet," Dredd finds himself investigating a Mega-City One gay fetish club where the fetish is Dredd, himself.

I watched the Dolph one as a kid. I was bored as hell w/ it. The Thomas Jane one has promise but it's weak. Hated some changes to the story but also some things are just poor in the narrative. W/ War Zone, I loved the fuck out of it cuz it's as violent and to the point Frank Castle is, for the most part. Sadly..it's a bad script. But anytime there's violence it excels. Love love love the action in that one. Almost made Rambo: First Blood Part IV look like a pussy w/ some of it's violence.

Though I was labeled a "hater" for my feelings about the film, I will definitely see a sequel as long as Urban is involved.

Just finished this. Thought it was pretty solid, esp given the limitations they were working with. Personally I would've reworked a few things. But a solid B, *** for me. Would definitely be down for a sequel.
There was some potential to really mimic the look of Blade Runner in spots.... the brightly lit rooms took away from that a bit...but maybe they needed it for the 3D. More memorable supporting characters, some variety in lighting would've really helped. I did like the way they showed Mama....had her just lurching in hallways, peering around characters/corners.

So for a Judge Dredd neophyte who liked the movie and is interested in reading some of the original stories that preserve the mentioned social commentary and satire missing from the still-enjoyable film, what stories come recommended. He seems to have as extensive a history as many of the American superhero comics, and those are huge. As regards Travis returning, apparently Urban says that he was actually taking most of his direction from Garland, who hung around the set, and apparently Travis was locked out of the editing room. He isn't anywhere on the DVD special features, is he? Judging by his resume, he comes mostly from TV and seems to be a gun for hire, so maybe they brought him on precisely because the writer and producers wanted to be the ones with the majority of creative control.

They are also starting a Year One series.
