Re: The Expendables 3

Stallone wanted the first movie to be PG-13 and later caved by adding CGI gore to make it R. And it shows.

Fuuuuuuuck. I hope the action is great but the PG-13 kind of snips what gunplay action of this scale entails.

Re: The Expendables 3

The PG-13 doesn't bother me one bit. As long as it's envisioned and crafted with a PG-13 in mind, it can work just fine. However, if it's clearly shot with an R in mind and then chopped up for a PG-13, the results are usually lackluster (though there have been exceptions when the R content was already tame). And PG-13 movies that try to up the rating via CGI gore end up looking cheap.

That slightly self-deprecating quality was one of the things which made the second movie more fun than the first. And the PG-13 rating is very disheartening to hear.

Re: The Expendables 3

Disappointed, the R rated violence was part of the enjoyment of the first two. I hope they shot it as an R because we'll probably get that version on blu-ray at some point.

I'm with you on 2 versus 1. EX1 tried to take itself far too seriously and came across silly because of it. I get that Stallone was trying to replicate what he accomplished with Rambo/John Rambo but it didn't work with The Expendables. I enjoyed The Expendables 2 far more but it did go a bit too far into camp at times. Hopefully The Expendables 3 strikes the perfect balance.

Re: The Expendables 3

I'd rather see an R rating than a PG-13 one too, but to be honest it seems like films can get away with a lot of action violence/blood/gore with a PG-13 rating too so maybe it won't matter that much. The MPAA seems to care more about swearing and sex/nudity when it comes to their ratings as opposed to violence. Kind of an ass backwards way of thinking but that's a totally different topic.

Re: The Expendables 3

At least the overall tone should feel the same, as the violence was the only thing R-rated about the first two. Different from Die Hard, where the lack of f-bombs changed it too much from the previous ones...

I wouldn't be amazed if this is studio mandated after EX2 really underperformed here. Especially since they have Rousey and Lutz in this now.

You could kinda see the studio influence on the most recent trailer.. Fast & Furious font, naming the young cast members, etc. What I'd like to know is if Stallone had any say in the rating, he may not...and he's just going along with the studio mandate. (his reasoning makes absolutely no sense, nobody under the age of 17 is that interested in these movies) What choice does he or any of those guys have? Like it or not, they have next to no leverage as far as calling the shots.

Ex2 dropped 20% domestically, but made up for it with international sales....so, 300m is really the benchmark for success as I see it. It'll be interesting to see how it does.

Re: The Expendables 3

Just make a good one. I don't care what it is rated. Frankly this one will probably suck as well. At least part one extended cut was tolerable...part 2 don't even get me started.

Looks awesome. And it looks like they finally got the right balance of action and humor.

Re: The Expendables 3

That actually looks better than the prior two. Why the last one? Does Stallone not want to do these any more? They're fun and unlike most action movies we get these days, which makes them profitable.

I thought Part 4 was already in development. Pierce Brosnan made a comment about it not too long ago.

There is a part 4 in development. However, Stallone has made comments about this being his last time starring in these movies. So perhaps this movie is a passing of the torch for the new crew.

Re: The Expendables 3

Trailer is awesome. Love how much fun Ford appears to be having, and nice nods to them replacing Willis with him.

I don't think it's really the last one. Haven't they already been talking about a 4th and 5th? The "one last ride" is just a marketing gimmick and and overused tagline. Also, why are they sticking with the Fast and Furious font?

It seems a bit deceptive. I've seen the teaser in front of every movie over the past month (so 4 separate films) and every single time someone has said something along the lines of "Oh, the next Fast and the Furious!" Then they show Stallone and it's like "Oh."

I'm in. Gibson makes a great bad guy. Ford's a comforting presence and Snipes is a welcome addition. Not sure what Banderas is doing in there. I still don't know who any of the younger newcomers to the cast are. I may need a score card for this one.

He fits a lot better than Kelsey Grammer does.

Re: The Expendables 3

I had fun with the first movie. Second movie was pretty lame and the CGI blood was awful. This looks more like what i was expecting when they originally announced they were going to do an Expendables movie and bring all the old action stars together. Count me in.

Re: The Expendables 3

Looks really fun. Love the little winks like Ford being a last minute replacement and getting Snipes out of jail. I always have fun with this series. Will be seeing it opening weekend in 2 months.
