Why exactly did/do people hate 'Quantum of Solace'?

I think it's a great follow-up to Casino Royale. I have no problems with the action, the plot makes sense to me just fine and it's a solid action flick. Never understood the hate.

They probably should have had a decent script before they started shooting. Has any movie written on the fly turned out well?
Anyway, here's the original 11-page review thread about the movie.

It's pretty much the writing and editing that brings this film down for me. There are a lot of nonsensical parts that left me scratching my head like the way they handled Mathis and Fields and those action sequences were just too over the top in style (you could tell some Bourne crew members were on board)
And did anyone else hate that they made the agent at the end look almost exactly like the Fields character. I thought for a minute that she was not dead and was in on it with the Yusef character.
Just an average film made even worse by being the follow up to one of the best Bond installments.

I like it MORE than Casino Royale, which I thought turned into a mess in the second-half (the first hour is very strong). But, then again, I still think Dalton was the best Bond (and The Living Daylights the best Bond movie), so I'm clearly a minority here.

I didn't hate it, but I just had no interest in seeing the Casino Royale story continued, at least not as the main focus of a film. I liked CR, but by the end of that movie I feel like it had made its point and I was ready to move on.

I hate saying this about Ultimatum but I found that it really took me nowhere. Supremacy had an objective. Ultimatum did as well but it lacked the punch that the previous had.

Yes, the action scenes really suck. They are erratic and make little logical sense. But does anyone else love the fact that this is James Bond in full-on psycho-revenge mode? The only thing he's doing is trying to hit the organization responsible for the death of Vesper. He wants to kill people.

I would agree with Shannon that 'Casino Royale' weakened in the second half. I haven't seen 'Quantum of Solace' but I recall that the reviews were not very favourable on release

I thought it was a confusing mess and since it had been a while since I had seen Casino Royale, I was confused as hell. Sometimes movies go overboard on obvious expository dialog, but this didn't seem to have any. The whole thing just seemed pointless.

I hated it due to the totally convoluted plot that made almost no sense, completely confusing action scenes, a forgettable villain, and that nothing in it worked so that the whole thing seemed like people walking through unrelated scenes.
And after the success of Casino Royale, this was even more of a disappointment, so even more hatred for fumbling the ball there.
(However, on its plus side, Quantum of Solace is still much, much better than Die Another Day.)

My thoughts then are pretty much my thoughts now about QOS...
I'd have to call QOS a missed opportunity. It was fair. It was decent. It's not the worst Bond movie, but it's in the bottom 5 or 6. With another rewrite of the script (fleshing out the plot and giving the characters more depth) and a different photographic/editing style (fewer tight shots, less shaky cam, fewer quick cuts, etc) this might have been a much better movie.
Bond movies should emphasize location. There should be more wide shots of locales showing off the areas where the story takes place. That was always something that made Bond films stand apart from standard action movies. That was minimized in QOS.
So, again, not bad, but a very flawed movie that could have been, and should have been, much better.
First thing's first - the pre credits sequence was garbage. It was hard to follow, used too many tight shots and quick cuts, and wasn't really all that exciting.
As for the movie itself, it's good, but could have been much better had they given it just a few more minutes here and there to breathe. Whenever there was a character moment it was like gold because the movie just screamed out for more of those scenes. The action was OK, but I'd have to say this was the worst job of cinematography and editing in a Bond movie since...well, ever.
Wrong director, wrong director of photography, wrong editor. That part of the movie just did not work.
The story was fine, the acting was fine, but I have to give this one a mixed grade due to the poor technical job done by the guys in charge.
Maybe a director's cut with a few more character scenes will be forthcoming - because this movie sure could use a solid re-edit.
Still, it was entertaining. Quantum of Solace was good, but it could have been, and should have been, better.

Actually... Die Another Day , take away the ice beam thing and power rangers suit, is for the most part has better action sequences than Quantum of Solace, yes, because you could tell what is going on!

I just watched Casino Royale again in preparation for another Quantum of Solace viewing. Casino Royale is so fucking good.

Indeed it is, I like it even more now then when it was released, and watching QoS afterwards really helps the sequel. I think they're terrific together. The only discrepancy I have with how one flows into the other is that at the end of Royale, Bond says that the Vespa coverup doesn't clear Mathis of any wrongdoing or suspicion. But in Solace when Mathis pops up

He never said it didn't. He just said Quantum of Solace is a much, much better film than Die Another Day and it is. The latter is a worthless piece of shit that lead to a complete rebooting the same way Batman and Robin lead to a rebooting of that franchise.

I hate it and love it equally.
Some of the set peices are quite good. The opera scene is quite good. I was actually surprised at the double agent at the beginning. I still love the bit where that glass shatters in slow mo at the end (I just like the way it looks).
The car chase at the beginning is alright but edited to death. The henchman had a wig!
Also, no Bond baddie should be called Dominic Greene. Sounds like an estate agent!

For me personally it's because it couldn't have been a more generic action film. NOTHING about it said it was a Bond film save for the name of one character and even that casting was a terrible idea to begin with. Top it off with it trying futily and ultimately failing at being a Bourne clone and what you have is one of the most forgettable films in recent years.
