I wonder if Hugo will be getting a re-release after getting all of the nominations?

^ probably just a coincidence, but it suddenly has more show-times in my city. It was down to 2 per day, and it's now at 4.

Seriously, if that is what your inferring you clearly have no knowledge of the history of cinema and you should perhaps just go off and start reading up on that.

The Academy Awards are sometimes on the ball, sometimes they are not. There has been a substantial amount of great films that were overlooked, so getting any misplaced joy over it not being nominated seems completely retarded.

I personally don't need a film to be recognized with awards to love it. It's nice to see it occur but it has no bearing on my thought process.

Anymore, of all the awards I would say I pay most attention to Cannes, and even then it doesn't mean That much.
stop jumping to conclusions. I liked Drive. It was in my top 3 of last year. I said whoopty fucking doo because sound editing is a meaningless category.

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

The only horses I have in this race are DRAGON TATTOO, TRANSFORMERS 3 and BRIDESMAIDS. They were the only major releases I liked last year and at least they all got nominated for something. I'm thrilled that Rooney Mara got nominated. She's fantastic in that role.

Of course I would have been happiest if the latest Pokemon movie had been nominated in the animated film category. But, alas, only in my dreams... (And in the same dream, Meryl Streep would be one of the voice actresses in it.)

Exactly...unlike DeNiro, she still cares about the craft of acting and tries to take roles that will challenge her. I can't believe there are people who criticize her choice of films.

Yeah but you also said this. I believe you, it just seemed like you were relishing the moment.

Alright, nevermind my rant then.

Yes. Since the first year of the category in 2001 with Monsters, Inc., Pixar films have always been at least nominated for Best Animated.

They won with Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille (2007), Wall-E (2008), Up (2009), and Toy Story 3 (2010).

The only one not to win, but was nominated was Cars (2006), which lost to Happy Feet.

In fact, up to now, every Pixar film has been nominated for an Oscar (won some), before the category was introduced, starting with Toy Story in 1996.

I didn't see Cars 2, but was it really that bad, or just held to a higher standard since it was Pixar and not as good as some of their masterpieces in recent years?

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

Why is Bridesmaids even being mentioned at all with the Academy Awards?

It was an ok Comedy but there was nothing about it that deserved any kind of accolades.

Someone needs to have an intervention for the Academy.

War Horse? < thats what I'd like to do to that Horse. This was the worst film I seen all year!

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

I don't understand the Jonah Hill nomination at all. What was so special about his performance? It really seems like coasting off the film's other accolades. Albert Brooks was passed over for him?

No Tilda Swinton for Best Actress? Really? She'll wind up on one of those future lists about the best performances not nominated. But, I have a feeling that not enough people saw the film anyway.

Other than that, they were mostly what I expected. I'm glad to see The Tree of Life get a couple of major nominations, particularly for directing (which puts it in the conversation for a "real" BP nominee). Of course, it won't win since it wasn't nominated for editing.

I think The Descendants will win the major awards including BP, Director, and Clooney for Best Actor. Hugo may have gotten more nominations, but many of those were technical.

I didn't care much for Bridesmaids, but I think the supporting actress nod is deserved. McCarthy was really good.

And yeah, Jonah Hill getting nominated is ridiculous. I really enjoyed Moneyball, but he didn't do anything special at all.

Agreed. I understand that having a successful comedy led by females is not common. But in the end, while Bridesmaids is funny, it wasn't even in my top five comedies of 2011. What irks me is that far superior comedies have been snubbed for years (40 Year Old Virgin, The Hangover, Superbad, Superbad, Knocked Up).

I got a chuckle from this post on Twitter:

Albert Brooks @AlbertBrooks

I got ROBBED. I don't mean the Oscars, I mean literally. My pants and shoes have been stolen.

You can count on it. In fact ALL of the BP noms will be re-released, at least to AMC theatres. http://go.amctheatres.com/bps The Tree of Life on the big screen again, yes please.

It's not so much the film choices that aggravates me about Meryl Streep, it's that the Academy is up her ass every year. She could very well have gone the De Niro route and picked movies simply for the paycheck. The only difference between her and De Niro is that Meryl Streep would have been nominated for Best Actress in Rocky and Bullwinkle had she been in it.

Not Streep's fault at all. The blame goes to the Academy for nominating her sight unseen every year.

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

Worst snubs:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo/David Fincher
Drive/Albert Brooks

Worst inclusions:

War Horse (a few good scenes, one in particular, but rather tedious)
Tree of Life (tedious doesn't even begin to describe it)
(probably, only BP nominee I haven't seen it but based on all reports) Extremely Whatever

Frankly, I'm glad Bridesmaids didn't get a BP nod. So overrated. Can't speak to TGWTDT since I haven't seen it yet, although since it looks like my kind of movie, I'd agree that is is lame it didn't get nominated or that Fincher got a nod either.

It was fine, but nothing special. I got pretty bored with it, and the 3 year old still prefers the first one. I don't think it should have been nominated, but (admittedly haven't seen it) can't imagine Puss n' Boots should have either. I wish How To Train Your Dragon had come out this year.

Surprised by Hugo's showing, it didn't seem to have much buzz around it. And Melissa McCarthy will win, the supporting category always goes to a breakout performance - Marisa Tomei, Cuba Gooding, Jr., etc.

Nice to see Gary Oldman finally get a nom... and for his most subtle role.

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

Based on the solid, consistent Editing nomination 'rule', the only films that realistically have a shot at winning are The Artist, Hugo, Moneyball, and The Descendants.

To go a step further, Hugo and The Artist clearly have more noms than the other 2. Which means it's likely a 2-film race. I think the DGA winner this week will give us a hint on what happens on Oscar night.

From what I've read online, many are also unhappy that Reznor didn't get nominated for Score this year.
