2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!
Because the rules as I understand them seem to make it helpful for something like Tree of Life which provokes strong reactions in people (both very positive and very negative). So, for it to get a lot of no. 1 votes isn't surprising. I know it would be my #1 film of 2011.
Hoping that rule helps it out to win but I dont know. Seems odd it isnt nominated for editing also since I thought it was one of the best edited and easy to watch films of last year.

Spoiler:
Mod Note: If you're posting a spoiler, especially for recent films, put it in spoiler tags. To not do so is simply rude.

Interesting that there are only two song nominees. On the positive side, that drastically reduces the musical numbers (except for Billy Crystal's, which will probably be good).
And as for animation: Never heard of A Cat in Paris or Chico & Rita, but I guess the academy really didn't want Rio or Tintin.
Well, I guess I'll be seeing Extremely Loud today...ugh. Redboxed Midnight in Paris, so after those two I'll have seen all the BP noms.

What does Stephen Daldry have on the Academy? He gets all of his movies nominated for best pic. I can't really bitch about this too much since I love Billy Elliot and The Reader floored me, but ELEC looks horrible.

Easily the best nominations were: Gary Oldman (with his first, shockingly) and Nick Nolte (easily deserves a win).
Worst snub: Tilda Swinton.
Also, looks like Woody finally gets another director nomination - one that he deserved in 05 for Match Point.

I and many others understood it fine. While I do appreciate the beauty of Malick's film making, that doesn't make up for what was just an overall boring (yet visually stunning) movie to watch, for me of course.

Jesus people I didn't criticize Streep's acting. It just feels like some of these roles she takes are for Oscar gold only.

Would have loved to also see Tom Hardy get some love for Warrior in Supporting Actor.
Kind of annoying how Melissa McCarthy got nominated for Bridesmaids, which I did think she was good in, but not compared to Shailene Woodley in The Descendents.

From the wrap:
"Hugo" received the most nominations, with 11. "The Artist" received 10.
"Moneyball" and "War Horse" received six each, while "The Descendants" and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" each got five.
Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" only received three nominations, but all were in marquee categories: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography.

Avatar got 9 noms, so no prob with movies that use it. They just have a hard time with the acting aspect. How much of it was actor-created and how much was computer-created.

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!
Thought it was funny how Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close broke up the 8 nominee symmetry and caused a person or two to gasp in surprise. I was surprised too, haven't seen it though.
Huge surprises in the Better Life actor, Brooks' snub and no Tintin in animated. I thought the latter two should have happened, pulling for Rango now. And even if Brooks' was nominated, I think Nolte should win. Plummer was excellent as well. Also surprised Bridesmaids got that writing nom, didn't think it deserved that.
Moneyball, The Help and Midnight in Paris were good, but I didn't think they were great. Tree of Life I expected to get nominated, I thought it was just ok. From the noms I've seen, I honestly like War Horse best. Still have to see Artist, Descendants, Hugo, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close of the BP noms, will soon hopefully. I thought Girl with the Dragon Tattoo would get a nomination for BP too. Got snubbed on score as well. AND director.
I usually watch the acting nominees early, but both Albert Nobbs and Iron Lady look incredibly boring to me. Jessica Chastain was nice to see, she was probably the best part of The Help
No idea why Jonah Hill is nominated, he really didn't stand out. Glad Oldman was nominated even though Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was really disappointing. I still have a lot of non noms I wanna see, like Shame, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Young Adult, A Dangerous Method and Rampart
Must suck for Brooks, Andy Serkis and Kirsten Dunst right now too. Seemed like they had a lot of hype (less so Serkis). Wish there was some 50/50 and The Guard love. So far 13 Assassins is still the best movie of 2011 to me though. And only 2 songs for best song? Weird.
Wow, sorry for the novel.
