2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!
I'm really hoping they give the Oscar to Gary Oldman over George Clooney. I want to see George start to lift his ass off his seat and have to sit back down.
How is "Editing" measured? How can Moneyball and The Descendants be considered better edited films than The Tree of Life?

No nominations for Courageous. Hollywood snubs Christianity again. lol
Am I the only one totally sick of George Clooney? Snubbing 50/50 is downright criminal.

Interesting that there are only two song nominees. On the positive side, that drastically reduces the musical numbers (except for Billy Crystal's, which will probably be good).
And as for animation: Never heard of A Cat in Paris or Chico & Rita, but I guess the academy really didn't want Rio or Tintin.
Well, I guess I'll be seeing Extremely Loud today...ugh. Redboxed Midnight in Paris, so after those two I'll have seen all the BP noms.

I'm not sure if you're being serious, but my very Christian parents and sister watched Courageous, and even they thought it was pretty lame. (Not that being lame has ever stopped something from being nominated for Oscars.)

'Man or Muppet' though is a hysterical song and scene in the movie
in terms of the foreign film nominations why even bother - A Seperation is a guarantee win.

I'm SO happy Moneyball didn't get ignored by the Academy...granted, it's not going to win anything (well, it has a good shot at Adapated Screenplay perhaps), but I STILL think out of this list of nominees it's going to be the film most enjoyed and remembered by the general public.
Also, THANKS for not giving Bridesmaids a Best Picture nod. It's an average (and I'm being generous here) comedy, at best. Melissa McCarthy was the best thing about the movie, and she got a deserving nomination. The overall film itself isn't worthy.

I thought last year was bad, but the Academy is determined to outdo themselves this year. Where do I even start?
First off, fuck Bridesmaids. People thought that movie was funny?! I didn't laugh once! It was the worst comedy I saw all year, and I saw Hall Pass!
Extremely Loud has been getting nothing but terrible reviews from everyone. Daldry must be sucking cock like there's no tomorrow to get all these nominations.
I thought Tree of Life was Malick descending into self-parody, but I'm not surprised to see the Academy nominate it.
No nominations at all for Shame, Martha Marcy May Marlene, or Win/Win is a fucking joke. War Horse being nominated for anything is a cruel prank, especially when Tintin is snubbed for best animated at the expense of Puss In Boots (which, while cute, was nothing special).
Out of the current nominees, I'd like to see the following wins: Midnight In Paris for picture, director, original screenplay. Gary Oldman for actor. Nick Nolte for supporting actor. Rooney Mara for actress. Rango for best animated. Everything else I don't care about.

I don't know - the Academy has a pretty strong track record of picking the wrong movie for best foreign film (though the best screenplay nod does suggest that it has a good amount of support.)

Now it's time to make predictions. I hope to see the Live Action and Animated shorts when they come out in a month or so.
Also, why are the nominees TBD for The Tree of Life? I'm wondering what type of situation that is.

haven't seen Win-Win, but I'm glad both Shame and Martha Marcy May Marlene weren't nominated, two WAAAAAY overrated films.

For what it's worth, I thought Pitt gave a career-best performance in Moneyball, and I have seen Tree of Life. Playing against type doesn't always mean a better performance.

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!
I would pretty much count Moneyball out because Bennett Miller didn't get nominated for Directing. A BP winner without its director nominated has only happened 3 times in history, the last one being Driving Miss Daisy in 1989. Before that you have to go back to Grand Hotel in 1932.
As for Hugo, many of its nominations are technical, and the lack of any acting nominations puts the odds against it. Since the 1960s, if I'm not mistaken, only 4 films have won BP without an acting nod. However, it has happened 3 times in the last 16 years, as Slumdog Millionaire, Return of the King, and Braveheart managed to do it.

Of course, I thought last year might be split, and Hooper shocked everyone by taking the DGA and then the Oscar.

Thought you were serious for a second.

Hate to sound like a broken record but The Tree of Life is the closest film to God you will find.
