Given the comments about the movie here, I am disinclined to research or watch it. Still, some of my favorite movies are routinely trashed here at DVD Talk, so one never knows, it could be a hidden masterpiece...

Ignore the haters and watch it someday. It's a great film.

No, it's a cult film with a fervent/rabid following, and that's all that it is.
I like Darren McGavin (loved The Night Stalker/The Night Strangler and the series derived from those two made-for-TV films), but I hate even him in this awful Xmas story.
It's really just crap that some people like an awful lot. That's OK; I like some movies that really are crap, too. Phantasm is a great example. One of my fave horror flix, but I watched it with my GF last week, and she had never heard of it, let alone have a "history" with it, as I do (saw it at the drive-in on it's initial release, etc). She abhored it. The point is, I know that it's pretty crappy, but it's quite original and refreshing (uh-oh, there's that word again! ). I like it alot, but I understand that it's just not very well-made.
Christmas Story just reeks, IMNSHO.

Much more than just a cult film. It's highly rated everywhere, 88% on RT for example, and most people really like, if not love it. Besides DVDTalkers, I've never met a single person that hates A Christmas Story. And I talk about it all the time, as I'm a Christmas junkie and it's one of my favorite films.

Yeah, that was an odd thing to say. After defending those other three movies.
Anyway, I wasn't a "kid" when I saw them, but I was young, I hated/still hate:
"Temple of Doom"
"Top Gun"
"A Christmas Story"
"The Neverending Story"
Movie I didn't love but can understand why people do:
"The Goonies"
"Ferris Bueller"

All this hate for A Christmas Story and The Neverending Story, two of my childhood favorites.

The big difference here being Xmas Story is actually a very well made movie versus the enjoyable mediocrity of the Phantasm series.

I stand by it. The other movies have great lines, funny moments, etc. Wizard of Oz starts boring, remains boring, and ends boring. Now if you want to talk good Oz movies...then I'd be happy to share my love for Return to Oz.

Never got the love for stuff like Ferris Bueller or The Goonies. I mean, I remember watching them as a kid, maybe one or two things were amusing, and then I moved on. When I got onto the internet as an adult and saw all this crazed adulation, I was (and remain) flabbergasted that people lavish such praise on them.
(It's really annoying on the Trek forum I'm on, where any discussion of Generations turns into jokes about Cameron.)
I've never seen A Christmas Story, and never even heard of it until I started posting on DVD forums and people were always going on about it. Still haven't bothered watching it, maybe one of these holiday seasons I'll try it.

I never found A Christmas Story to be as awful as some are making it out to be.
For me, I hated all the David Zucker parody movies. I rented them on video as a kid and all that I can remember is that they were painfully unfunny. Even when I catch them on TV now, their mass appeal escapes me.

I barely remember seeing the film, but I CLEARLY remember seeing the 1st one and thinking it was badass..and it still is. But when I saw the 2nd one I was confused. Like it didn't make sense to me. I'm assuming that still holds. And for some reason..I'd swear Rob Shneider was in it cuz that comedy relief guy (who for some reason in my memory looks like him...maybe he doesn't..I dunno). I was so confused watching it as a kid.

I don't really care for Ferris Bueller either, Broderick was just smarmy kind of like his nemesis the snooty waiter, they weren't as different from one another. Virtually everyone else in that movie was funnier.
