For some reason, this movie gives me a The Explorers vibe. Except the alien or whatever they meet is not going to be so friendly.

This movie gives me an (insert nostalgic 80s movie title here) vibe. Can't wait!

Definitely #1 on my Summer list. I may be stating the obvious, but this film definitely has the chance of being a mega hit. No doubt it'll have a huge opening and if word of mouth is positive, I think it can carry it to the $300 mil club. I'm sure there are plenty of moviegoers who are burnt out on comic book movies and sequels, so they may flock to this one.

I can't see how anyone gets an E.T. or Goonies vibe.
Neither of those movies had major explosions or cities being destroyed and people killed.
All three did have children in the films though.

I can KIND OF see how people can see an E.T. vibe...I think it's the way the trailer kind of gives off an "awe and wonder" feel...I THINK.

From what I gather from the trailer and the comparison:
Goonies - Sleepy little town - kids band together seeking adventure and save the town - looking for One Eyed Willy - Evil Developers/Fratellis
Super 8 - Sleepy little town - kids band together seeking adventure and save the town - looking for One Eyed Alien - Evil Government/Military
Rinse, repeat.

Man, you guys bitch and whine about endless sequels and remakes, then Abrams and Spielberg team up to make something cool and unique and everyone shits on it. Whatever. Enjoy Thor.

On the other hand, I'll watch anything with Kyle Chandler.

Yeah, I don't mind the ET-like melodramatics because it's balanced with the killer alien shit. When you start to get sappy like ET or have a bunch of bungling crooks like the Goonies, then you ruin whatever suspense there is. In this case, there's going to be deaths which is something you can't really do in a pure kids' movie.

i suppose it's because i expect everyone's level of nostalgia to be similar to mine. i realize not everyone was born in '81 like i was but spielberg was a major part of my childhood and he captured what growing up in 80's suburbia was like unlike any other. this trailer not only seems to pay homage to that but it also seems to recreate the tone that those films had. also like KC has mentioned...this is an ORIGINAL story and does not have a built-in audience.
