Way to screw with my attempt at being elitist
(to note, Fight Club is in my top 20.)

It depends on pricing on your area. My IMAX tix were $18.50, but a regular screening would be $12. I appreciated the large-scale screen and ridiculously loud sound in IMAX, but I wouldn't say it's essential to seeing the movie this way.

Just got back, this was the best "Hollywood" movie I've seen in a long time. Entertaining from start to finish, It felt like like a classic Spielberg production. The kids were all great, especially Lil' Fanning, she was perfect in the rehearsal scene. I was shocked she was 12, seemed older.

I don't think it's screwy, people just need to stop thinking of that list as ranking the best films EVER.
I imagine IMDB voters aren't rating the quality of movies against each other, but as each movie individually based on enjoyment. Dark Knight or Inception are 9 or 10's in my book in entertainment value, but if I was basing my rating while thinking about how it compares to all the other movies i've seen in history, I'd have to adjust my score accordingly. I don't think many people care, or want to do that. Not sure why internet movie nuts always freak out about whatever is in the Top 10.
To be honest, I bet if most people actually did compare all the movie ratings they've ever done themselves, they'd see some screwy things too

Most of those movies you mentioned are very entertaining but I wouldn't even say that they are better films than half of the Criterions in my rather small collection. I guess it all depends on how you define a great film. And as far as this movie goes I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

You think Inception is a better movie than any Criterion you've ever seen? I gotta disagree with that. Inception is a bigger money maker and a better draw to the movies but that doesn't make it a better film. I think that Fish Tank left more of a lasting impression on me than Inception did and that is just one recent Criterion that I will bother mentioning.

Given the choice I'd gladly watch Inception twice before any Criterion I have, even though I do enjoy them to some extent at least.

IMDB works somewhat like this...
Somebody really likes a movie for whatever reason. Their level of enjoyment clouds what actual level of a quality it is.
Example: I love The Expendables...but it's such a fucking flawed movie that it'd never be in my greatest films ever made list....it'd be pretty low on that list. It WOULD however be somewhat moderately high on my favorite movies.

I am in the camp that finds Spielberg to be annoyingly melodramatic and heavy-handed most of the time. Although there are touches of that in Super 8, I actually liked this movie quite a bit, which is mostly the result of Abrams' handling of the material. The pacing was great, the story was engaging, and the acting was excellent all around. Sure, there are some moments where suspension of disbelief is extremely challenging and yes, the ending is melodramatic, but not so much that it ruins the fun 120-minute ride. At least not for me.

Dr Mabuse wins the thread!

We paid about $12 per ticket instead of about $8 for a day-time IMAX showing. I think it was worth it. (Of course, I wasn't the one who paid!) Super 8 contains a lot of action, and it has some impressive visuals.

I saw it in IMAX, but I didn't really see that it was any better than it would've been in regular showings. It's a great movie, don't get me wrong, one of the best of it's kind since E.T. and Close Encounters, but it really didn't have much scope to it other than the train crash in the beginning and the city war shots at the end.

Re: Super 8 (produced by JJ Abrams)
I'd imagine that no matter how original a plot/story may be, they'll be ways to relate it to past movies/stories previously done. It doesn't mean the person stole the idea. But in all honestly, I don't have issues with people borrowing a theme and giving it their own spin. How many vampire movies have been produced since Dracula/Nosferatu? How many stories of alien invasions happened since H.G. Wells War of the Worlds?

I think the problem is when a film takes on a subject that's been done before but doesn't improve on it. Inception focused too much on trying to create a new form of dream film but didn't have great fundamentals.

I just saw this today in IMAX(a first for me) and I thought the film was excellent and really enjoyed it and left the theater smiling as I haven't enjoyed a new film like this in a long time. It's easily the best film I've seen all year so far.
