I enjoyed the second. But it's really just based on a few great moments, and the effects. It's a movie that's carried by it's effects. They're just enjoyable to watch. Along with Lord of the Rings, it's the closest to photo-real that I've seen yet.

Other than the effects, I just went crazy for a few parts (Jack facing the mouth of the big monster and the way the last minute or two worked). Everything else what just alright, and carried by how cool and detailed everything looked.

I'm glad to see that he's moving on. This will hopefully make the Bioshock movie better but will also hopefully push the Pirates 4 movie in a new creative direction. Wait did I just say new creative direction for a movie Bruckheimer is attached to? Damn, my coffee must have not kicked it yet.

I'll still watch the 4th Pirates. I do enjoy the series.

I'm glad Verbinski is off this one. I thought 2 and 3 should have been chopped to pieces and made into one 3 hour ass-kicker. It would be cool if they could get someone like Alfonso Cuaron to helm 4.

Rob Marshall in talks to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 4

http://weblogs.variety.com/bfdealmem...ate-ship-.html

Disney is on the verge of putting Rob Marshall in as director of a fourth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” a move that puts the film on track for a 2010 production start, with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.

There hasn’t been a director at the helm of the pirate ship since April, when Gore Verbinski stepped out to focus on a movie version of the vidgame “Bioshock” for Universal (Daily Variety, April 7, 2009). Though that film’s lost some momentum, Verbinski has moved on to other directing and producing projects.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have been meeting with a number of directors in recent weeks, because the studio wants to pull the “Pirates” film together and have Depp star in it before he does “The Lone Ranger” for the producer and the studio. While Marshall’s involvement wasn’t immediately confirmed, sources said things look good enough that the studio has begun casting new characters that will appear in the picture.

It is big business for Disney, as the “Pirates” trilogy grossed $2.6 billion worldwide with Verbinski at the helm. Sources say unless things break down at the last moment, Marshall will be steering the pirate vehicle’s next installment.

Marshall, who made his feature directing debut with the Oscar-winning musical “Chicago,” most recently completed another musical, “Nine,” which stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson and Sophia Loren. The film will be released November 25 by The Weinstein Co.

CAA reps Marshall.

Is anyone surprised that Disney is making a 4th film? I assume they are targeting Summer 2011 if Production begins in 2010.

I couldn't find that thread in a search just now, actually. The only way I found it was by searching on my own user name.

But, anyways, I liked Marshall's work on Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha. I hope he does get the gig.

I actually hope he doesn't. It's not that I don't like the Pirates movies, but I'd rather someone as talented as Marshall not do something like this when he could be making something better. The same goes for Alfonso Cauron, who was mentioned in the other thread.

Then again, years ago I probably would have said the same thing about the director of Memento doing a Batman movie, and look how that turned out. :)

Hmm. I really liked Chicago but hated Memoirs of a Geisha. Neither film screams to me "this guy should definitely direct a swashbuckling supernatural actioner". I'll have to wait and see a trailer cos I can't even guess as to how this'd go.

Hell, who thought that Gore Verbinski was a good choice after that movie about the mouse?

I'll take Mouse Hunt over any of the 3 Pirates movies anyday

I think having a fully developed script is more important right now. And I say that having liked all 3 Pirates movies a lot. Don't know what to think of Rob Marshall.

I hated Chicago and thought Memoirs of a geisha was instantly forgettable but I t hink Nine looks good so why the heck not. Hes no Verbinski but if he can tone down the amount of creatures and computer effects and make a good old fashioned adventure more like the first Pirates then I wish him the best of luck.

I haven't played Bioshock but everything I've been told and read about the game indicates that it would make a terrible movie because (A) the story is so dense and told in such a non-traditional manner that, while making for an engrossing gaming experience, would make the most boring (albeit visually striking) movie ever made and (B), even games that would easily translate to movies have a terrible track record when such adaptations are attempted.

Just be happy nobody is screwing up a Bioshock movie rather than complaining about how one wont be made.

At the current D23 (Disney) convention, the title for the 4th film has been revealed

"This afternoon, Walt Disney Pictures made the big announcement at the D23 Expo that the fourth "Pirates" film will hit theaters in Summer 2011 and be titled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Speculation has already begun that the subtitle "On Stranger Tides" refers to author Tim Powers' novel with the same name. The following is the official description of the book:

Puppeteer John Chandagnac, who was sailing to Jamaica to get revenge on the uncle who had stolen his father's inheritance, has no choice but to join the buccaneers who have taken him prisoner--and soon, known now as the pirate Jack Shandy, he finds himself learning to survive in a treacherous new world of cutlass-fights, sea-battles, and voodoo magic on sun-blinded tropical islands. The legendary Blackbeard is assembling a ruthless navy of pirates living and undead to voyage to the fabled Fountain of Youth, and Jack Shandy must use magic, swordsmanship, and even his puppeteer skills to free himself and the girl he has fallen in love with from Blackbeard's deadly supernatural domination.

At the end of the third "Pirates" movie, it is shown that both Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) are next eyeing the Fountain of Youth. Barbossa has "stolen" the Black Pearl back from Sparrow, but Sparrow has cut out the most important part of Barbossa's map to the Fountain of Youth.

If they will be adapting the book, will Sparrow and Barbossa have to team up again against Blackbeard? We'll have to wait and see how it will turn out."

Great. I love watching Depp as Sparrow, he's just so fun. That's all I'm looking for. Barbossa hopefully returns too.

High expectations? If I could buy my opening day midnight showing tickets today, I would. Yeah, I guess you could say I have high expectations. But then, I loved the first three, so I am pretty sure I'll love this one too.
