Since Monday is a holiday for some, Sunday night did more business than it would have otherwise.

Eh, the backlash here isn't that bad. It just seems worse because there's a couple posters that are particularly negative and continue to discuss the movie.

Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday

My big dream was that Avatar would shoot past Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to be the highest grossing film of 2009. I would rejoice in that victory.

Now its box office take is over $100 million more than that of Transformers, it's been number one for five consecutive weeks, it's likely to overtake The Dark Knight by next weekend, and with another few weeks of ticket sales, it's even within range of beating Titanic.

I am blown away.

I'm gonna try and see it on the day it passes Titanic, didn't think I would see that movie go down for a while.

Wife and I went to the movies yesterday afternoon to kill some time after working out and couldnt believe how packed it was. Looked like a Friday-Saturday night. I would say that 85% of those were going to see Avatar. Pretty amazing that people are still going to see it.

I think it's the same phenomenon that made Titanic the biggest B.O. hit ever. No, not 12 year old girls seeing it over and over (although they did). It's the people who normally don't go to the movies being curious as to what the big deal is about it. And for the last few weeks you've been hearing something about Avatar still going strong and I think it makes people want to check it out for themselves.

Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday

James Cameron must have secretly thought over the years that he hopes no breaks his Titanic record, even though i'm sure he knows it's inevitable. And now that day has finally come and it's himself that does it. What are the odds of that happening?

Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday

I'm amazed at how Avatar still is drawing in film goers.

I figured it would do well enough to be perhaps be the #1 film of the year, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect it to challenge Titanic for the all time record.

Dark Knight took 18 days to go from $450 to $500 million. Avatar took 4 days.

A little sad to see this leap Dark Knight which I thought was a better movie all around. Never thought another movie would hit $500 this quickly!

The amount of money won't make Dark Knight any worse of a film.

It's just a nice thing to see. No different from those wishing Avatar to beat Transformers 2.

Except that Avatar WAS a better movie than TF2.
