I think Book of Eli is gonna win the weekend. My theater was packed at 11:10 am which is really rare. Those old people love Denzel.

Its going to be pretty close, I think Avatar gets the edge because of the surcharge on the 3D/Imax films though (Although I think Eli will have more people in theaters)

Holy crap, it's being reported that Daybreakers and Youth in Revolt have already been bounced from the top 10.

I went to see It's Complicated yesterday afternoon. The ticket line was a lot longer than usual for the time of day, and it seemed like most people were seeing Book of Eli.

The wife and I are finally going to see Avatar in 3D this weekend, so add another $20+ bucks to its total.

Kind of a shame, Daybreakers was enjoyable. Eli won Friday but Avatar is expected to trounce Eli for the remainder of the weekend. It isn't uncommon for R-rated flicks like Eli to drop a bit on Saturday. Avatar should be near $1.6b worldwide after this weekend with $500M in the US and about $1.1B overseas (currently standing at $450M domestic and $974M international).

1. Book Of Eli (Alcon/Warner Bros) NEW [3,111 Theaters] Friday $12M, Est 4-Day Weekend $35M
2. Avatar (Fox) Week 5 [3,285 Theaters] Friday $10.5M, Est 4-Day Weekend $50M, Est Cume $500M
3. Lovely Bones (Paramount) Week 6 [2,563 Theaters] Friday $6.2M, Est 4-Day Weekend $25M
4. Sherlock Holmes (Warner Bros) Week 4 [3,173 Theaters] Friday $2.9M, Est 4-Day Weekend $12M, Est Cume $182M
5. Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squealquel (Fox) Week 4 [3,246 Theaters] Friday $2.6M, Est 4-Day Weekend $15M, Est Cume $195.7M
6. It's Complicated (Universal) Week 4 [2,673 Theaters] Friday $2.4M, Est 4-Day Weekend $10M, Est Cume $91M
7. The Spy Next Door (Lionsgate) NEW [2,924 Theaters] Friday $2.3M, Est 4-Day Weekend $12M
8. Leap Year (Universal) Week 2 [2,512 Theaters] Friday $1.9M, Est 4-day Weekend $7M, Est Cume $18.7M
9. The Blind Side (Warner Bros) Week 9 [2,408 Theaters] Friday $1.6M, Est 4-Day Weekend $7M, Est Cume $228.5M
10. Up In The Air (Paramount) Week 7 [2,107 Theaters] Friday $1.5M, Est 4-Day Weekend $6.5M, Est Cume $64M

- Daybreakers (Lionsgate) Friday $1.4M, Est 4-Day $5M

wouldn't that make avatar no 1 again, if that number is accurate? its scary that it can still make 40 mil plus in week 5.

That's a pretty impressive number for The Lovely Bones, considering that it's Oscar buzz has dropped to virtually nothing.

Yes, Avatar is expected to be #1 for the weekend overall even though Eli won Friday.

Not even the lack of oscar buzz, just the fact the movie gets panned in general. Apparently teenage girls are digging it.

I wasn't much of a fan, but I'm surprised that so many holdovers are knocking new movies out that quickly.

Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday

has anyone done an adjusted Domestic gross for Titanic vs. Avatar? or even adjusted Titanic vs. what all the gross for Avatar would be if the entire movie was shot in 2D?

surely, Titanic adjusted would be over 1 billion and therefore beat any Avatar #'s...

Then why not include adjustments to factor in the rise of the internet and illegal downloading from 1997 to 2009? Or the proliferation of cable TV channels in the past 12 years? Or the huge increase in DVD ownership and home viewing since then? See, there are just too many factors in comparing box office so it's just easier to avoid all that "adjusted for inflation" stuff and stick to what the movie made in unadjusted dollars.

Ditto. Whenever I read that a figure has been "adjusted for inflation," it throws me off completely and I can no longer trust the story.

I don't think its too hard to understand the adjusted charts, it's not an exact science. If I want to get an idea of a movie's popularity that's what I prefer to look at.

When I went to see Book of Eli yesterday the theater was sold out and packed in the mid-afternoon. It's gonna have huge opening weekend but I don't think it will have legs.

'Avatar' passes 'Star Wars' with $491.8M in US

The Associated Press
James Cameron's "Avatar" has shot past "Star Wars" to become the No. 3 movie on the all-time domestic box office charts. Next stop: "The Dark Knight."

Cameron's sci-fi saga took in $41.3 million over the weekend, raising its domestic total to $491.8 million. Worldwide, "Avatar" has grossed $1.5 billion.

"Avatar" topped "Star Wars," which took in $460.9 million domestically in its original run and several reissues over the years. Factoring in today's higher admission prices, "Star Wars" remains well ahead on actual number of tickets sold.

"Avatar" is closing on "The Dark Knight," No. 2 domestically with $533.3 million. After that, only Cameron's "Titanic" at $600 million will remain ahead of "Avatar" domestically.
