Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday
I think Book of Eli is gonna win the weekend. My theater was packed at 11:10 am which is really rare. Those old people love Denzel.

I'm contributing 3 RealD tikets' worth to Avatar's B.O. take for the weekend.

Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday
Holy crap, it's being reported that Daybreakers and Youth in Revolt have already been bounced from the top 10.

The wife and I are finally going to see Avatar in 3D this weekend, so add another $20+ bucks to its total.

Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday
wouldn't that make avatar no 1 again, if that number is accurate? its scary that it can still make 40 mil plus in week 5.
|
Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday
That's a pretty impressive number for The Lovely Bones, considering that it's Oscar buzz has dropped to virtually nothing.

Re: Weekend Box Office: Martin Luther King Jr Holiday
has anyone done an adjusted Domestic gross for Titanic vs. Avatar? or even adjusted Titanic vs. what all the gross for Avatar would be if the entire movie was shot in 2D?
surely, Titanic adjusted would be over 1 billion and therefore beat any Avatar #'s... |

Some predictors were selling bones short because of that mixed review buzz, although others thought it would do better. Then why not include adjustments to factor in the rise of the internet and illegal downloading from 1997 to 2009? Or the proliferation of cable TV channels in the past 12 years? Or the huge increase in DVD ownership and home viewing since then? See, there are just too many factors in comparing box office so it's just easier to avoid all that "adjusted for inflation" stuff and stick to what the movie made in unadjusted dollars.

When I went to see Book of Eli yesterday the theater was sold out and packed in the mid-afternoon. It's gonna have huge opening weekend but I don't think it will have legs.

'Avatar' passes 'Star Wars' with $491.8M in US
The Associated Press James Cameron's "Avatar" has shot past "Star Wars" to become the No. 3 movie on the all-time domestic box office charts. Next stop: "The Dark Knight." Cameron's sci-fi saga took in $41.3 million over the weekend, raising its domestic total to $491.8 million. Worldwide, "Avatar" has grossed $1.5 billion. "Avatar" topped "Star Wars," which took in $460.9 million domestically in its original run and several reissues over the years. Factoring in today's higher admission prices, "Star Wars" remains well ahead on actual number of tickets sold. "Avatar" is closing on "The Dark Knight," No. 2 domestically with $533.3 million. After that, only Cameron's "Titanic" at $600 million will remain ahead of "Avatar" domestically. |
