Anyone else get that "Scooby-Doo" vibe at the end with the summation by Holmes?

Just saw this today and thought it was a good popcorn flick. It helped that I came in with ZERO expectations though. I would have preferred that they explored the Holmes character a bit more; instead we got witty reparte between Holmes and Watson which is okay but I felt the movie lacked an edge. Rachel McAdams was kind of flat as Irene Adler(I liked her in Time-Traveler's Wife though). I found the explosion scene (in the middle of the film) really stupid and dumb.
I'm not sure I enjoyed the Guy Ritchie camera work that much though. I guess I'm hoping that they delve deeper (and darker) into the Holmes character in the second film. He seemed a bit too happy in this film. This wasn't as bad as the trailer indicated. There is still a lot to improve upon though.

I also saw it this afternoon. Great entertainment, but nothing exceptional. I found enjoyment of this movie can be greatly enhanced if you are a fan of 1)Robert Downey Jr. , 2) Sherlock Holmes stories, or 3) Guy Ritchie movies. I happen to be one of all three, so the movie worked for me.
I don't get all the hate for Rachel McAdams. She was not an award winner, but nowhere near abysmal. Definitely better than Guy Ritchie's ex-wife would have been.

Just got back - LOVED it. THAT'S how you make a fun movie. Great stars (even McAdams, I have no problems with her), an interesting story with some fun twists, entertaining set pieces. I didn't want it to be over.
I'll get the Blu-ray on Day 1 as well, because the movie looked fantastic. Can't wait for the sequel!

I enjoyed it; I didn't think it was anything amazing, but a fun way to spend 2 hours. I saw this at a Drive-In theater and was kind of annoyed because the screen ended up being really dark so it was hard to tell what was going on during some of the dark scenes and the fights though
I don't know much about the Holmes character, but enjoyed Downey's performance and his interaction with Watson. I didn't have an issue with McAdams either. Her role just seemed underwritten, to no fault of hers.

I am also hoping for a sequel, as they have this nice James Bond thing set up with

I thought it was okay, I've read many of the stories and was hoping for something good...the camaraderie between Holmes and Watson was fun, as was the dialogue, however the story itself left me thinking "This is it?" Saw it with my brother, and midway through, I noticed that he was asleep.

Saw this yesterday with my girlfriend.
I liked the film, didn't love it. Agreed with Tracer Bullet, the film felt kind of long.
Lord Blackwood was rad.

I don't know how some of you guys felt this was a "fun" movie, because I felt this was the antithesis of fun. I personally would've enjoyed getting two root canals with no novocaine at the same time while getting repeatedly punched in the balls for two hours. At least in that case something would've happened.
There was not a single reason this film needed to be near two and a half hours. Especially since there was:
A) Little plot.
B) Little plot development.
C) No sense of danger or threat because Sherlock Holmes is the most pretentious, clever motherfucker in the room.
D) No sense of danger or threat because despite the fact that Mark Strong is an amazing actor, his character had no rhyme or reason to be there.
The only "fun" parts involved Sherlock and Watson bickering. If the film consisted of all that and then finished with them finally admitting their love for each other, I might've enjoyed the film as there would've been some sort of story and closure. Instead, we got a two hour plus adventure in terrible storytelling with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law trying to salvage whatever they can.
And to whomever said spend your money on purchasing the DVD for Young Sherlock Holmes instead, I completely second that statement.

I was massively disappointed in this. Not because it was bad per se, but because it was a whole lot of nothing. I'll give it another shot on BD, but I'm not overly hopeful.

Saw it last night and these three posts sum it up nicely. When Holmes and Watson were hamming it up together it was golden. The look, setting and tone of the movie was also solid but everything else was just a mess. Holmes felt like he just walked off the set of Snatch. The fight scenes were beyond ridiculous. The story was a bore, and like blutoast's brother, both my wife and I fell asleep.

The most impressive thing to me was the closing credits. Guy Ritchie always delivers in the 'credits' department.

Maybe it has something to do with my complete ignorance of the source material, I know nothing about Sherlock Holmes in previous films or novels. It was the most fun I've had at the theater since Zombieland and I'm sure I'll check it out again before it leaves.

If Sherlock Holmes was more like Snatch and the general plot was about how Holmes and Watson owed money to a gangster and they were past due on their debt, THAT would've been a highly superior film.

Swept Away was awful, Revolver was a mess and Rock N' Rolla felt five years too late.

Re: Sherlock Holmes (Ritchie, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

Didn't dig this in the slightest. Not that familiar with Sherlock Holmes as a source material, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't an action star/superhero or a member of fight club. The davinci code-esque magic/faith/science vibe was tired and contrived and for the story development we got, it was about 45 minutes overlong. Downey Jr. is OK but like him, the movie comes across as entirely too smarmy and sure of itself.
As in the case of Body of Lies, I did spend the entire movie thinking Mark Strong was Andy Garcia, though. Those two must have been seperated at birth.

I thought it was pretty decent. It was obvious from the trailers that it is a popcorn movie, and while there wasn't quite enough gaudy action to make it an all-time great popcorn film, there was enough good acting and decent writing to make it well worth the time.
I'll be picking it up on home video someday.

I thought it was decent, a fun popcorn movie. Downey and Law were wonderful as Holmes and Watson. Even though the whole bromance thing has been overdone, it worked well here.
I didn't mind McAdams. She's one of the rare actresses who isn't completely overexposed and is less than selective (Scarlett Johansson comes to mind and increasingly Amy Adams).
I liked the whole look of the film, especially the refusal to prettify London. The costumes also were great, especially McAdams' pink dress she wears when she sees Holmes for the first time. It reminded me a lot of Winona Ryder's red dress in Dracula when Mina meets him for dinner.

The funny part is, despite the fact that my brother fell asleep (and when I realized this, I woke him up), he said that he really liked the movie. Maybe he slept through all the boring stuff.

Hm, I must say I'm still intrigued by this but these negative reviews don't help. It seems like exactly what I thought would go wrong has gone wrong. But, on the other hand, Law is underrated IMO, I like Downey and I'm willing to give Ritchie at least some sort of a free pass since I liked Snatch/Lock Stock so there's a 100% chance that I'll check this out at some point.
After getting through your guy's impressions though, looks like VOD or rental is a better approach to this one. Actually passed on an XMas day showing of this mainly because I had apprehensions about the quality of it but my family that went gave it glowing reviews.
