Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

After having seen the film I really hope it gets a solid weekend out of the gate. It deserves to make infinitely more than Wolverine.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I tried to get tickets to multiple showings at multiple theaters last night and they are all sold out. I've not seen that for movies like Harry Potter and Star Wars, so I think this one is going to be huge.

It also looks like Wolverine won't be able to do more than $30 million this weekend resulting in a drop of 70%.

I will be pretty shocked if it does more.
If Star Trek only makes $30 million today and tomorrow, you'll have guessed correctly!

Wolverine earned $9 million Friday on its way to $30 million for the weekend.

Box Office Guru : "Kirk and Spock sent Wolverine plunging on Friday to an estimated $8.4M representing a colossal 76% collapse. "

Also "Star Trek may fly to $67-72M over its 3.5-day opening frame"

Nailed it too. All of the hype made me feel pretty confident about my 75m prediction.

I have a question. How can they release weekend figures already? Are Sunday showings not factored in?

They're an estimate. Actual numbers will come in later. Usually, the estimates are pretty spot-on, but I've seen them change.

BTW, the figure I gave INCLUDES the Thursday showings.

Whelp... I was off by about $12, but not as way off as those predicting it would do north of $100 million. Final box office take will be in the neighborhood of $155 million. Not too shabby for a Star Trek movie.

You can sex it up all you want, but it's still Star Trek people. And for the record, I've seen it twice and loved it.

No, final domestic box office will be closer to $210 to $220 million. Generally speaking, a movie winds up making about 3 times its opening weekend, unless it winds up really having "legs" or has horrible "word of mouth" (hello, Wolverine). It will be over $100 million by this time next week.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

Made $7.5m on Monday following a $21.1m Sunday.

By comparison, Wolverine made $5.5m on its first Monday following a $21.3m Sunday.

Better comparison perhaps, Iron Man made $6.9m on its first Monday following a $26m Sunday.

This proves absolutely nothing but is mildly interesting just the same. (Supports the good word of mouth theory floating around the interwebs. Or perhaps just skews older.)

A completely unfair comparison just finish up on, The Dark Knight made $24.5m on its first Monday following a $43.6m Sunday.

Huge Number by Star Trek. It has a outside shot at 300 million (might end up around 250-270) if it hits a 3.5 multiplier

If a $5-6mil range is kept up daily until this weekend, the movie could actually crack $100mil before it's second weekend!

I honestly never thought I'd ever say that about a Trek movie!

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

^ With those kind of weekday numbers it's a virtual lock to be at $100m before Friday.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I think this will pull in about $79 million in its opening weekend (that's just a complete guess).
