Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek
I'm going to go with $82 million for opening weekend take. I think the Burger King marketing (TV ads with BK looking like a Burger Klingon) tie-in is going to make a difference.

I'm thinkin...
45M Thur-Fri
35M Saturday
25M Sunday
= 105M OW.
I don't see it opening less than 90M. The film has buzz and positive reviews out the roof... both the young and older demo are going. I want to go but also my mother wants to go (because she remembers watching the Original Series).
Wolverine is going to sink at least 60% next week... probably closer to 70%. 2/3 of the people who see it think it's just alright or even unremarkable.

wolverine is not going to have that great legs, but drop 70%? even turds drop less than that. Plus Wolverine might get spill over buisness from star trek.

No. A 60% drop for Wolverine will happen, if not more. Poor word of mouth and the excitement for Star Trek has it as a dead man walking next weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a 70-80% drop.
After seeing it last night, I still stick by my $50-60 million opening weekend. It may take more (especially due to it being the only PG-13 film of the weekend), but I see it making more of it's money due to the legs the film will have due to positive word of mouth.

I voted for the highest one, but I misread it as total gross. I assumed it was total when I saw the $150 million+. No way trek or any other movie will that anytime soon.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek
i think because of the damned great reviews so far and a re-invention that seems poised to not cater to just fanboys, but all moviegoers a like i say...
$85-100 mil. maybe more open weekend. i think it will surprise. it will do more than $250, probably $300+ by end.

I guessed 51-75 million. Based on my past history in these things, that means it will most likely be right up around 100 million.

There should have been two different polls here. One for Trekkies and one for everyone else. I can't imagine how anyone can think this is going to open at over $100 million. Many die-hard Trekkies aren't happy about the new crew and will not go on opening week. In my mind the franchise has some stink on it - it reeks of old man. Seriously how many really young fans, 13-29 years old, are there? That's a hypothetical question BTW.
Don't tell me Abrams fans are going to come out in droves. MI3 opened at under $50 million. Cloverfield (which he produced) opened at $40 million.
For the record, I love Star Trek and will be there opening weekend. My guess? $60 million making it the biggest Trek opening ever, but not much more.

$74 million and some strong legs total somewhere around $185-200 mill or so would be a good guess.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek
I think that the utter disappointment of the Star Wars prequels is actually helping with this relaunch of Star Trek, which is totally weird considering all the nerdboy "you can only be one, a Star Trek fan or a Star Wars fan" fights over the decades. Personally, I was always without a doubt, more of a Star Wars fan (although did enjoy TOS and TNG), but this new "action based" approach is totally winning me (and many others) over.

Is this post serious or sarcasm, I can't tell.
I would literally bet my DVD & Blu-Ray collection that this movie makes more than 52-55 mill opening weekend & 107 million total domestic.

Leave him be, he's just mad because Star Trek has always been a hard-R series and now it's PG-13.
Oh, wait.
OK, OK, I got it. He's mad that this movie is under 2 hours.
