Like I said subjective....
Still...I think his best film is probably Memento. Directing wise..he's getting better w/ each film. |
Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action
Memento is my least liked of Nolan's films that I've seen. Except for a small scene with Carrie-Anne Moss, I quickly figured the whole thing out and guessed what the final (or should I say first?) scene was gonna be. It only gets less interesting on subsequent viewings.
It was an interesting concept but had dull excecution. |

Ok...so obviously many of us haven't seen it but are expected to like it cuz of Nolan's track record. And this is more subjective to each of us but...if Inception is better than TDK, which is possible cuz The Prestige was a lot better than BB, I can't wait to see what he does in BB3 but even more so what he does AFTER he's done w/ BB3. I hope BB3 is better than TDK (which as a superhero film is kind of hard to do cuz it was pretty damn cool). I honestly am shocked that Nolan's growth is getting better in such a short time.

It was an interesting concept but had dull excecution. Oh, and directed at Solid Snakes comment earlier, Inception is my most anticipated film of the year by far. After that I'd go with Tron Legacy, The Fighter, The Social Network, Predators, Red, and then The Expendables. The Expendables look fun because it has so many awesome action stars, but beyond that it doesn't have a whole lot of appeal for me. |

Yeah but TDK wasn't in the same league as The Prestige. Though latter was better than both BB and TDK. So it's not so cut and dry. Either way, I'm really looking forward to Inception.

This simply looks incredible. To top it off, I have NO idea what it's about, which is hard to do with several long trailers. It's about f-ing time someone doesn't give away the whole damn movie in the trailer. Consider my but in a seat on opening weekend. (And that will be a first for me in a very, very long time).

Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action
I hated the ending of The Prestige, but up until that point it was easily the most gripping movie I'd seen that year. The storytelling, acting, directing, design, etc; were absolutely fantastic. In terms of repeat viewings, The Prestige is my favorite Nolan flick -- the sting of a disappointing finale definitely went down as I rewatched it and noticed how much foreshadowing he put in. The fact he pulled it all off on a $40m budget is also extremely impressive.
Cannot wait for Inception, this has been a largely disappointing year in cinema though, so I'm cautiously optimistic for this. |
Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action
Empire have just given this a stonking 5 star review. A few choice quotes - "The third act makes Memento seem about as complex as Bear in the Big Blue House.", "In terms of scale and style it is, as Nolan intended, comparable to Bond's best excursions - yet filtered through a brain-frying, subconscious-sperlunking, time-dilating structure that boldly frames action sequences around each other.", "The strength of it is that you remain emotionally engaged even if you're not entirely sure what's going on."

It's a great film but you'll need to see it a couple times to begin to understand everything. It hurt my brain.

No it is a good thing. It'll just be easier on Blu-ray/DVD where you can rewatch it like 5 times in a row.

Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action
Maybe this has already been discussed, but does it put anyone off that it seems like this is 'borrowing' looks from TDK too much? Posters look blatantly like ones from TDK, and even the 'look' of the movie looks TDK-ish. I would have thought Nolan would try to separate it a bit more from the Batman movies.
It still looks good, but this just a minor annoyance I have. |
Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action
The movie doesn't play anything like TDK. It totally has its own look and feel.
|
Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action
I think he's just finding a comfortable shooting style, TDK's shooting style had a lot in common with The Prestige (very cold and defined look), and Inception seems to continue the trend in its own way. Considering the subject matter he usually shoots, it isn't a big surprise (Nolan isn't known for the warm and fuzzies).
I do agree the posters are a little too similar, but I think that's the studio's fault, they REALLY want to cash in on TDK-factor, especially with what is described as a $160m version of Memento. |
Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action
I have to say, though, several shots in the first trailer made me think that Nolan had found his "look" in TDK and was settling into that groove on this film. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it was the first time that I could tell from a single shot that I was looking at a Chris Nolan film.

Yep, The general public is going to hate this movie. |

Since The Dark Knight got ignored at the Oscars, I bet Inception is going to make the Best Picture nomination...

But looking at the character trailer this film doesn't have the same cinematography style as The Dark Knight. It seems a lot more contrasty then his pervious films.

Maybe, but if it falls flat financially expect it to face some hurtles. The Oscars love having movies that connect with both audiences and critics alike to avoid looking snobbish. |
