It is hard to gauge, but based on my anecdotal evidence, it will be huge. Every one of the people I've talked to in the past two weeks who is a parent of a teenage girl has indicated that their daughter is going, many to a midnight showing. And many of the parents are tagging along (either as chaperones or because they too want to see the film).
I'm just looking at it compared to the first Harry Potter film, which opened with $90 million (in 2001 dollars), in about 3600 theaters. Twilight is opening in at least 3200 theaters, and has amassed a very similar (if hormonally different) cult following. So my guess is that it will be well over $75 million, quite possibly reaching $100 million. Of course, I could be wrong

It will probably drop significantly in the second week, but will it drop again in the third, or turn into another Titanic (which appealed to a similar audience)?

I decided to watch the trailer for the first time out of curiosity. The movie looks like a Direct to video trash. Whats the appeal for this film? The story seems unoriginal like a Romeo and Juliet meets vampires. So is it that teenage girls get wet over the guy characters or something? Is that the appeal for them?

This is getting crazy.
There is apparently ticket scalping going on in schools for early showings of this film. My neice indicated that her friend paid $50.00 per ticket to a scalper for four tickets to one of the midnight shows - and she has already had offers of twice that again to sell them on.
I have zero interest personally, but this thing is going to be huge. No question now that The Dark Knight records are going to tumble (sadly.)

i will sell my left nut to cancer and give everyone on here a thousand bucks if this breaks The Dark Knight's record. It might do well in certain areas, but i don't think it stands close. Remeber all saying that HSM 3 would break records, it didnt' and neither will this. i predict maybe 40 mil tops opening weekend. Also depends on how Bond does next weekend.

I disagree. I know quite a few women who are avid readers and none of them care for the series.

Count me among those that has never even heard of these books. I saw the trailer and thought it looked like utter shit, and yet it appears to be some sort of phenomenon. I read somewhere online the other day that the Soundtrack is #1 or something and the movie hasn't even been released yet.
[QUOTE=Chrisedge;9037289]Anyone who doesn't know about these books and their impact on girls/women...I would think doesn't hang out with ANY women that read books, doesn't look around at a book store very often or hasn't a clue on pop-culture. /QUOTE]
I hang out with girls/women that read books, and as far as I know none of them have read 'em. I know my teenage little sister hasn't. maybe it's the fact that I don't go to bookstores very often...because I'd like to think that I'm fairly up-to-date on pop culture. I guess I let one slip by me? Are they really that popular?
I'll be interested to see how this does out of my morbid curiosity of the sickening tastes of the younger generation.

I do as well and they are popular especially amongst teenage girls. This "fervor" gives me even more reason to avoid the theaters for the next few weeks. In my opinion the movie looks like shite and will only show teenagers that you can churn out product that is worth less than two turds and a good chunk of society will just gobble it up. This type of stuff is a prime example of this generation of teenagers and how I think many are headed in the wrong direction.

If only one of the actors would have died before it was released you all would be going on and on about how great it is without even having seen it. The Dark Knight is the most overrated movie I have ever seen and while I doubt it will happen I hope Twilight shits all over it.
